Intrigued by the fact that the Dan did the theme song (FM (No Static) to a movie about a radio station, I bought the movie in question on Bluray recently.

Things went wrong immediately when I noticed that the main character (the ‘hero’ of the piece) was played by Dempsey from Dempsey & Makepeace (or was he Makepeace?). Well, have you ever seen him another movie? It then descended in to a cliched tale of fighting ‘the man’ that would put an episode of Citizen Smith to shame. The performances were also very annoying, almost to a man/woman, with the guy playing the DJ Eric Swan being particularly annoying.

The final insult was the ending (yes, I hung around until then,mouth agape) – like something from the Childrens Film Foundation or a Scooby Doo episode. Truly excruciating.

Oh and the worse thing? Watch how those DJs handle those records! Eurghhhhh.

As I’ve got older I’ve started applying for (and appearing on) various TV quiz shows, on the basis that life is too short and I was fed up shouting at the telly without giving it a go myself. With variàble results, I must say. Amyone else here did the same? I know a few musos have done so (Douglas Stewart from BMX Bandits was on 15-1 for instance) so there must be other instances

Okay, I’m going to give this another go after the general apathy from my first post àbout this show .

The latest offering had a duet from Gilbert O’Sullivan and KT Tunstall (I love the former but the song was still shit, and the interview with Gilbert wasn’t much better), a seaside number from The Members that brought a smile to my face, a George Michael cover version from one-hit wonder Owen Paul that wasn’t actually that bad (though it is my favourite George song), a duet from Plastic Bertrand and Imagination’s Leeeeeeeee John (as bad as it sounds) and an interview with the lead singer from Love Affair, which I enjoyed very much (though his name escapes me). What’s not to like or abhor there?

Okay, I’ll be the first to broach this subject seeing as nobody else here has (though I know you’re all watching). Mike Read (80s DJ, not of Runaround fame) has been presenting something on the wonderful Talking Pictures TV each week for the last 12 weeks or so called the Heritage Chart Show.

It’s basically a chart of (mostly) new songs by acts of yesteryear from the 20th Century. Bands that I never knew still existed…like Sweet and Classix Nouveaux and The Undertones. Apparently the chart relies on votes from punters the world over so fair play….although some of the artists I must admit I’ve never heard of.

Great fun though and the current number one from New Kids On The Block (yes, you heard me), featuring Rick Astley, Salt n Pepa and En Vogue…yes, you heard me again) is an absolute banger and the video is a total hoot

One of my favourite bands were involved in the Aye Write literary festival in Glasgow last night and they did a short set afterwards. I remember hearing the Trashcan Sinatras debut single, Obscurity Knocks, in 1990 and thought they would be huge…I was wrong. However, I have loved them ever since and now, over 30 years later, I love them even more…their last album, Wild Pendulum, is probably their best and you can’t say that about many bands that have been hanging around for that amount of time. Trashcans, I salute you!

The Colour of Spring has long been one of my favourite albums but I had never seen this video until recently. How can you not love Mark after seeing this? As the Trashcan Sinatras nearly said, I wished I’d met him

I’m a fan of the 80’s, my formative years and the decade of my first concert (Haircut 100 – Glasgow Apollo) and first album I bought with my own money (Ultravox – Vienna). But this documentary was all over the place – no coherence and I especially hated the references to MTV starting in 1981, as if this happened in the UK…who had that in the UK then? The first time I saw MTV was either late 80s or early 90s. Very disappointing

After some initial trepidation re quality of pressings, I was delighted with the Beatles collection that Deagostini did a few years ago – yes, there was some tat involved (a Beatles turntable mat, anyone?) but the records were decent value overall (especially the triple album pressings of the Anthologies and At The BBC, which were only £24.99). So on seeing a TV advert for a similar Dylan collection* I must admit ‘I’m in’. And the extra £2 an issue for a Pro-ject turntable looks a right good bargain too, so count me in for that also. * I notice no Dylan though. Or Knocked Out Loaded. Or Christmas In The Heart. There may be others too
