Viva Avalanche commented on the post, The ingredients of a great podcast 1 year, 8 months ago
I think one of the major differences between the Mayo/Kermode and the Chart Music in-jokes are that the latter bring them up occasionally – Treacherous Steph only gets a mention when Simon Price is on – whereas […]

Viva Avalanche commented on the post, Unsung acting heroes 1 year, 9 months ago
Tombstone is no Unforgiven. Certainly no Searchers, Good, Bad and the Ugly, etc. But it’s a decent western. However, the cast is where it stands out. Kurt Russell, Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton, Sam E […]

Different years…Gene Hackman won in 1993 for Unforgiven, which was a 1992 film. DiCaprio was nominated in 1994 for Gilbert Grape, being beaten by Tommy Lee Jones. Forgive me for this pedantry but it’s […]

So good a song, I moved to Downpatrick! Not quite true but I did move to outside Downpatrick, Ash’s home town and where there’s a Girl From Mars mural on Church Street. There’s a purity to Kung Fu that Ash […]

Viva Avalanche commented on the post, Think you have a large collection…?! 1 year, 11 months ago
I’m fascinated by collections like this. How something goes from buying a few singles to a collection like this, which needs dedicated space, support via philanthropy, etc. with the concern being what h […]

I forgot about that. Even though I did watch it at the time. Although found it somewhat disappointing after Of Mics and Men.

I get your thinking…I was considering this recently flicking through Sonic Life and wondering if, as a rock fan, am I hardwired to think the album is the ultimate expression of music because that’s how it is in […]

Interesting…there’s a lot packed in there. I would conclude the same thing about Public Enemy but come to that same conclusion by a different path. Looking back at the press around PE at the time – music […]

Viva Avalanche commented on the post, From Finnish Tango to Spaghetti Westerns: Classic moments of European Cinema Soundtracks 1 year, 11 months ago
Morricone likely is the master. It’s the variation in styles over his career that makes Morricone stand out. From Chi Mai and Come Maddalena in Maddalena… …which was remixed into a disco song in […]

I don’t know if it’s only on vinyl that Fear of a Black Planet sounds dreadful. Having listened to it on all available formats when it came out – I was in a circle of friends who were all over Public Enemy at the […]

Suspiria is a much better film on account of the music. Suspiria is not a subtle film and Goblin is not subtle music but Argento clearly realised how one best suited the other. Anytime there’s anything witchy […]

Viva Avalanche commented on the post, Vox, Select, etc. free cassettes – worth hearing again? I need some triage here. 2 years, 2 months ago
I still have a lot of these in the box of cassettes that have, for reasons of space, gone into the attic. But from memory…that Columbia cassette has got a decent 1-2-3-4 of The Clash, Public Enemy’s Powersaxx […]

If you haven’t completed your collection of Fight Fantasy now…forget about it. Those books have been steadily creeping up in price.

Perfectly illustrated by our heroes being saved from a crushing in the garbage compactor in Star Wars – with cinematography suggesting the walls were mere inches apart – by R2-D2 managing to link to the Death Star […]

Haven’t seen the new film and won’t do so until it’s out on Blu Ray (almost wrote on home video there). However, widening the scope of the OP, I’m a Star Wars fan and have been since seeing the original film in […]

I will always remember him in Prince Of The City, which was a standout crime film of the 70s/80s to be ranked alongside Serpico, The Conversation and The French Connection that, by their seriousness, are heavy […]

Viva Avalanche commented on the post, It's June, Halfway Through The Year. Which Albums Are Any Good? 2 years, 4 months ago
Like others, the Lana del Ray, Lankum (but more the droning, atonal Swans-like dirges than the more traditional Irish music) and the Iris Dement album. It came out late in 2022 so the Weyes Blood album is a 2023 […]

Interesting…started listening to the Margo Price album in the new year and loved it. I had only listened to Margo Price intermittently before so I had little to go on but think Strays is a great album.
