It’s a “thing,” at the moment, and whilst it does potentially cover more options than straight man-to-man marking, I don’t believe it is any more effective.
At the end of the day, when the game of two halves has been played, it’s all a load of old balls
(Pep Gurdiola said that)
Mr Guardiola is a great, great philosopher but he is still only a human being. Sometimes, he’s wrong. These days, there is so much money in the Premier League, they can afford lots of brand new balls.
It pains me to say it but, if my beloved Everton defended set pieces as they did under Sam Allardice last season, we’d be four, or even six, points better off right now.
Thinking back, in the 60s, 70s and possibly into the 80s, English clubs all employed zonal marking and man to man marking was a dodgy practice that belonged on the continent, especially in Italy with its famed catenaccio defending.
Apparently, the ‘statistics’ say zonal marking works best but teams can take a little while to get used to it. Trouble is, these ‘statistics’ don’t seem to have been published. However, Valencia and Bayern Munich both went a full season without conceding a single goal from a corner.
I think shells is saying to stop a goal, you should mark a man. Marking a man is tricky. You have to respond to their movement, so you are always a mini step behind no matter how quick you are, and you have to have eyes in the back of your head to watch the ball and the man at the same time. In the end, you end up wrestling yer man to the floor and giving away a VAR penalty. Either that or a goal.

No zone has ever scored a goal…..
No. But Gênesis has.

Really good post and point that Tiggs.
Zonal marking it seems to me absolves people of individual responsibility. It looks terrible when it doesn’t work, which is often.
Oh yes, man marking for me any day.
You are too kind, Freddy.

As another Blue, I was going to make a similar point without invoking the name of The Great Satan.
It probably evens out. I prefer man marking but how many times have you seen somone evade their man and score? Lots of times, that’s how many.

It’s never worked at Tottenham. But then no kind of marking has ever worked at Tottenham.

Zonal Marking: vox, beats.
Zones don’t score goals.
Players do
Or…zones don’t concede goals.
Players do.
Hang on…I’m not a fan of zonal marking…doh.

Where else would you come for a conversation on zonal marking, wine, Trump, BT Openreach…oh and music.
Flouncers, you don’t know what you’re missing;
And marking a man is tricky but still way better than the alternative. So there.
