Thanks for the alert, @pencilsqueezer . A remarkable percussionist, a bridge for many listeners between classical Indian, jazz, rock and various other fusions. Some heard him thru’ John McLaughlin connections, others via Mickey Hart, but mine was Bill Laswell’s Tabla Beat Science.
I read that early announcements were premature but he died not long after that, prob by time I posted I expect , so shouldn’t have bothered commenting.
Anyway. RIP.
“The Indian classical music icon died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease, at a hospital in San Francisco, his family said in a statement.”

He even spent some time with the grump in a hat. So he was obviously a resilient sort.
Latest update suggests still on life support but yes , grim.
Latest update from where Junior? Every reputable news source has reported his death including an Indian government spokesperson.

No tribute from Gerry Rafferty as yet.
“Making Music” by Zakir Hussain is one of my all time favourite albums. Sad news.
