This appears to be all over Facebook, but why not do it here. An A to Z of a live act you’ve seen, with one for each letter. Strictly surname or band name only.
Here’s mine. Not having seen XTC or X-ray Specs, I have one letter missing:

it’s all over Facebook – name a band/artist you’ve seen live for every letter of the alphabet.
So what relevance to The Afterword?
1. It’s a list
2. It’s music related
3. The perfect opportunity for each of us to applaud, criticise, sneer at, and be jealous of, other peoples live experiences.
Here’s mine:

Looks like others are using Iggy for I, because it’s a stage name?
I – Iggy Pop
Some slightly fast ones being pulled here, regarding stage names.
Elton John is a stage name and should be filed under E, not J. Captain Beefheart is a stage name and should really be filed under C, not B but I suppose he often just gets referred to as “Beefheart” so it scrapes by. Everyone seems to be putting Bob Dylan under D. A stage name, but he’s very often referred to as just “Dylan” so it’s quite acceptable, I think. If anyone ever abbreviates Elton John it’s always as “Elton”, never heard of him being referred to as “John”.
Hmm not sure about that. I can’t visit a record shop or a library right now to check this out but surely Elton would be filed under J, just as George Eliot would be under E and David Bowie under B.
A long, long time ago Reg Dwight changed his name by deed poll to Elton Hercules John, so for a very long time it has not been a stage name, but his official name.
Initially, I went through picking my favourites (and ones that would make me look cool!), but then I got to S and really struggled to choose between Stephen Duffy and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, so I started again and picked the ones I’ve seen the most (some of which I’ve only seen once!) for each letter.

Still didn’t fill the blanks. If anything, this exposes me even more as ‘90s indie kid’
Up and Running! Top band
They seemed to support nearly every band that played in Liverpool at one point. They seemed to be permanently on the fringes of breaking through, but it just never quite happened.
Well I was tempted to put down S Club 7 for S. Actually think that might have been cooler than Simple Minds….

Yebbut – THE BEATLES!
Where? Could you hear anything?
I am still annoyed my parents didn’t take me to see them when they played Abergavenny (in a cinema), I would only have been about 1, but nevertheless …
First rime? Yes, they were second on the bill to the Big O. Second time, could hear nothing but screaming even though we were in the front row.

Hey, Jonny Lang, What was he like live?
Young! Very young. It was in 1999 (at the Pistoia Blues Festival) so, looking up his birthday now, I see that he was 18 then. Phenomenally good on guitar and a really good stage presence, but to be honest, not my kind of music. Patti Smith, Ben Harper and Deep Purple were all on the same bill. I thought Purple were pretty bad. Their first song was a cover of The Boys Are Back In Town. My main memory of the fairly small festival is that when Harper played Burn One Down it seemed that pretty much everyone in the audience lit one up!

@Kaisfatdad
That is hilarious.
I saw GSH twice in London in the early 1980s, at the Commonwealth Institute and Brixton Academy. He was great both times. He played at Ronnie Scott’s a lot but I never went because he didn’t have any new music. A friend who worked there said “He takes too much cocaine”.
Glad you liked it. Michael Marra was one of my favourite artists ever. I couldn’t put him on my live a-z under M, because I never got to see him live. I bought tickets twice to see him but I couldn’t make it one time, and the second time he was too ill to perform.
Absolutely hilarious! And all too true.
I had no idea Michael Marra had dabbled in faux bluegrass.

At last … someone else who’s seen The Quireboys
I was beginning to think I dreamt their existence
The Quireboys played a biker festival in a former socialist ballroom in Berlin. They were announced by the drummer of local punk band Die Ärzte, who drove onto the stage on his Harley (the security/health & safety guys all nearly got a heart attack). Who would dream of something like that??
I saw them supporting Johnny Thunders in Manchester in the late 80s. A ramshackle night, overall!
You saw Holger Czukay live, fatima? Respect.
Holger Czukay – that was a one-off concert/art installation in an abandoned museum in Berlin. Herr Czukay mostly played telephones and short-wave radios, but finally picked up a Hofner violin bass when David Sylvian joined the jam on synths. Some of these recordings (“Atmosphere Tunings”) were used on the “Radio Wave Surfer” album.

You’ve seen Miles Davis? Why haven’t you told us?
I think I may have seen Miles Davis at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970. Memories of that festival are very, very hazy. Lots of hashish and acid.
What about Jerry Lee Lewis? Do tell.
I saw him twice, one was early 90s at the SECC, and the second one was the Farewell Tour – he was GREAT both times, even though he was nursing his wrath to keep it warm.
I reviewed them both for The (Glasgow) Herald – the most recent show was £125, so I had swithered about going until the Arts Editor asked “are you free to do Jerry Lee this week?”

L – Albert Lee and Hogan’s Heroes (Rayners Hotel, Harrow £7 entry. The night after he’d been a guest performer at The Concert For George where scalpers were selling tickets for hundreds of pounds)

Is Van Morrison a band?
No but I have seen Midge Ure – same letter and much the same thing.
I saw about half an hour of Ultravox in 1986. The only gig I’ve left so early as they were terrible.
Some great lists here creating serious envy. Have I missed it or has no one listed Bob Marley and the Wailers? Of course some bastard(s) here will have seen them…
Bob Marley at the Lyceum is probably the most lied-about gig after the Sex Pistols at the Screen on the Green.
And Jedward at the Hollywood Bowl.
having Trouble embedding a video today. It was supposed to be a poor pun on Tom and Jerry at the Hollywood Bowl
Never went to the Lyceum, but I did see the Pistols at the Lesser Free Trade Hall
(I was 6)
That’s quite a journey from Reading at that age.
I called someone out about Marley at the Lyceum a few years ago. They would have been 14 at the time. Not impossible but I just didn’t believe him.
Suggs was there – and I do believe him.
Not so sure of every NME, MM, and Sounds journo of the time
I think @kaisfatdad saw Bob in a pub in Fulham (Greyhound?)
(it may have been someone else, but I’m sure it was someone on here)
Quite correct. It was at a pub in Hammersmith. I think. My first ever reggae concert.
I remember sitting there talking about A level English with my pal. 90% of the audience were West Indians. Well it felt that way.
Mrs duco01 saw Bob Marley live three times – as she’s always keen to remind me.
Mind you, none of those occasions was as early as the gig that kaisfatdad saw (i.e. The Greyhound, Fulham Palace Road, London, 20 May 1973).
Surely I can’t have been the only Afterworder making a fool of myself in the pond in front of the Palace Bowl skanking aling with Bob at the Garden Party?
That beats every other entry on this list. On googling I discover it was only 3 weeks after their OGWT appearance. Even with that exposure, only a handful of rock fans were hip enough to go and see them. Respect.
The second most famous person to attend that Wailers gig at the Greyhound in May 73 (after Kaisfatdad, of course) was David Rodigan.
In this brief clip he remembers the gig – and accidentally bumping into Bob Marley on the Fulham Palace Road afterwards …
I’ve seen Bob three times, once on my 18th birthday, Belle Vue, Manchester.
I debated which letter he comes under, B, M or W, and ended up plumping for someone else.

He kissed my girlfriend’s hand at one of the shows he did at Bramall Lane in 1988 on the Tunnel of Love tour. We were both working with the St John Ambulance and it was later in the set and we were starting to get a quite frequent queue of bodies hauled over the fence for us revive and send back into the crowd (just faints, we weren’t resurrecting corpses), so we were stood on the ramp leading up to the stage, so that we could spot the stewards hauling them out.
Bruce did one of his runs down the front of the stage, high-fiving the folk right at the front and he finished up right by us and picked her hand up and gave it a kiss. She didn’t wash it for weeks. Good view of the band from there too!
Nice! That show in Sheffield was used for the Spare Parts video. I managed a high five at a Toronto show in 2012.
I could add Keynes Bowl, Milton to that list.
If I were there, and I wasn’t …
You mean you haven’t seen Bruce in Xenia, Ohio, dai?

You survived a Diamanda Galas show relatively unscathed. Lots of respect!
