Many here are drowning under a sea of physical and digital stuff, and as time marches on the appeal of throwing stuff away increases to become almost as worthwhile as acquiring it in the first place. So – what have you thrown away recently? We’re after physical charity shop runs, and digital deletions. De-duping is not what we’re after, neither are we counting and CDs DVDs that have been ripped. That’s all just good housekeeping. Things you have waved off to Oxfam never to experience again
CDs of Nas’ I am, a triple CD set of Miami house music from 2006,
DVDs – box set of Anime, the first 6 episodes of about ten different series. Bought and never watched.
Digital – a Cold War Kids album. Never need to listen to that again.
Books – a couple of Larry Niven books (sci-fi horrendously dated) and a recipe book about bread
Having moves to a smaller house, we are trying to downsize in a big way (or do I mean a small way?) and I’m having to clear my Mum’s place as well, so there’s a whole lot of recycling going on. Anyway, so far, getting on for a couple of hundred books, virtually all military history, and not a few unread since the day I bought them, so clearly unnecessary. Furniture, a couple of TVs, CDs, natch, but I’ve still got the DVDs to go through, though there aren’t that many tbh. Oh, bags and bags of clothes, of course. We still have too much stuff, so we need to be more ruthless. I did think of EBaying, but I don’t seem to have the time for that, whereas a trip to the charity shop is quick and easy. Is Freecycle any good?
We, the lovely wife and myself do the charity run on a regular basis. We donate to “Mind” who are happy to receive the CDs, DVDs, books and clothes we no longer want/need. On each visit I make I end up buying more than I donate so it’s a “circle of pleasure”. The nice touch is they update us with how much the donations have raised.
Coincidentally, I tried to donate my DVD of “Circle Of Pleasure” to the hospice shop recently, but they had concerns about appropriateness. It’s political correctness gone mad.
Are you @moose-the-mooche in disguise @disappointmentbob
Hur hur.
My sister manages a Sue Ryder shop, so the stuff from my sporadic clearouts always go there. They just recently had a donation of LPs and CDs from me, some of which went on their stall at last weekend’s Folk East festival. They had a cracking three days, selling their entire stock of hats on the boiling hot Saturday (I don’t think people cared what kind of hat they were walking about in, so long as it kept the sun off), then all of the motley collection of umbrellas within about 20 minutes during a sudden downpour at the end of the Sunday. They also did in brisk trade in ‘new’ stock of harmonicas and tambourines.
‘goes’
Nothing – I am in “full-on” acquisition mode (and have been for a long time).
Actually not true – this only applies to CDs and Vinyl (I’ve actually forgotten what my carpet looks like – must have a tidy up some time).
Charity Shop runs (acquire / return / acquire) tend to involve books – last run included Jimmy Nail autobiog, David Jason autobiog, James Hunt biog and Alan Brazil book (There’s An Awful Lot of Bubbly in Brazil – NOTE: This is the WORST book ever published!)
You see that’s the confessional mode I’m after @rigid-digit ! A fine crop of ‘You shouldn’t have’ Christmas present books there
Great recommendation RD. Impossible to resist so just bought it. ‘Well written’ according to only Amazon review. This could be good.
Worst book ever? – this is fucking genius. Exactly – just exactly – the sort of inane vain glorious twaddle Alan Partridge was aiming for in his opus “Bouncing Back” .
‘Needless to say, I had the last laugh…’
Laugh out loud funny so far…
Okay @moseleymoles I can answer your question properly now, since today’s car booting has been rained off. This morning I’ve been working my way through some of the foot-deep stack of records in front of the stereo; those than I’ve yet to file or donate as they’d only been played once or twice. I’ve given several a fair listen since 7am (headphones until 9, I’m a good neighbour) and here are the keepers and those destined for the charity shop next week.
Keepers:
Donald Fagen – The Nightfly
Suzanne Vega – Suzanne Vega
Michael Murphey- Cosmic Cowboy Souvenirs
Gerry Rafferty – City to City
Dumpers:
Simple Minds – Life in a Day
Simple Minds – Once Upon a Time
Gregg Allman – Laid Back
I’ve had to pause for now, as it’s time for the excellent Charity Shop Classics, which will be presented by one of the three Afterwordian DJ’s. Listen here from 11am: http://allfm.org/
Ooh, it’s tim admin today!
And he’s playing some Bowie!
He’s just disparaged Tijuana Brass.
That’s it, I’m switching it off.
Hmm. Also this week it seems I’ll be donating my Bob Dylan t-shirt, since a certain person accidentally put it in the tumble drier. It’ll now make a nice belly top for an 8 year-old.
