Thanks @minibreakfast – me and mine are fine. Hope Phil O’Brien is OK. Just woken up to the news myself. We are in the Auckland region so we seemed to have dodged it – although apparently some people here did feel it. Seems like a big one and I hope everyone’s all right.
Schools and workplaces from Wellington to Christchurch are closed.
Obviously brings to mind Feb 2011 and those grim days. Christchurch is turning into something truly fantastic so I hope that they don’t let up.
Again, thanks for your concern. Hopefully other Kiwis will check in.
Drove along the Auckland waterfront this morning. Waves a bit choppier than might be expected given the benign weather conditions, but maybe that was just me over-analysing the situation. As BC says, we are largely unaffected here in Auckland (for those who don’t know, that’s north of the north island, the quake is situated near Christchurch in the south island). Our thoughts with those suffering once again in that vicinity.
Glad to hear you’re OK @nickduvet. If that’s the same article I saw the prediction was for seismic activity “somewhere in the South Pacific” – which by my reckoning is about a quarter of the planet and bracketed by well-established and well known fault lines. Not that I’m a cynic…
I’m in Auckland at the moment, we didn’t feel it here. Spoke to my Mum in Wellington this morning, she said it’s the worst earthquake she’s ever felt in 65 years of living there (she’s 90 years old).
Of more concern is that the tour I’m doing here (40th anniversary of The Last Waltz, I’m Garth Hudson’s understudy no less) is affected as the truck carrying the equipment can’t get on the interisland ferry as the wharf in Wellington has sunk 5 metres – most of the Welington foreshore is built on reclaimed land. Anyway it’s being managed by people that do these things…
It’s devastating for NZ, especially those in the South Island. But we’re resourceful folks and we manage. Thanks for the thoughts

Phew! Good morning Mr C, glad you’re well π
Have a recently-emigrated nephew, Dan, and his wife Jem. Not sure where exactly they are.
Fingers crossed.

It’s been suggested that the moon’s gravitational effects may have had something to do with it

Hi mate, hope you’re well. Let’s have a beer or two sometime.
Very well! Good to hear from you. Yes, beer. Soon.

Glad to hear you’re fine. Garth’s understudy, eh? Wow!
