John McEnroe told a nice David Bowie anecdote on this week’s Desert Island Discs, after picking Suffragette City as one of his tracks:
“When I started to learn how to play guitar, I was here in London getting ready for Wimbledon and it turned out we were staying in the same hotel. So I’m playing Suffragette City, I’m butchering it very badly, and after a period of a few minutes I get a a knock on the door, and I open the door and it’s David Bowie. And he looks at me and says: “Hey, John, I heard you were here, great to meet you, would you like to come up for a drink?” And I thought, ‘Oh my God, David Bowie’s asking me upstairs for a drink, and I said: “Yeah, I’ll come,” and he goes: “Don’t bring the guitar.”

Bowie in 1975: “It was CHALK DUST!!”
The story I had before was that it was rebel rebel Bowie heard and couldn’t bear it anymore so he knocked on th the door grabbed the guitar and said “THESE are the effin’ chords”!!
Well, I’ll take any day that over the word of somebody who was actually there 😉
Well it was John Mc Enroe who told the Rebel Rebel one too so which one was it, John?
Come to think of it,it may have been Bowie that told that story!
