This one was written in the 90s.
At the time I was playing in a covers band and frequently driving back from gigs in the early hours of the morning, struggling to keep awake.
In order to capture the unsettled feeling, the song is in 5/4 apart from the chorus.
Because it’s 5/4 and has copious amounts of Moog Synth, I have tagged it on SoundCloud as Progressive Rock.
That’s another great track. Love the “Fadd9-esque” opening chord; it’s like that “wake up!” moment when your brain catches you falling asleep at the wheel!
Opening section has a great dub/Joe Jackson vibe (rather than prog). The little piano progression/inflection before the (“How I wish I could/Sleep for a thousand years”) chorus is wonderful. Love the move into the ambient instrumental breaks near the 3 and 4 minute mark (the moog (?) bass reminds me of Jon & Vangelis in a very, very good way). The deep guitar break for the outro just adds a lovely warmth that deepens the inevitability of the sleep desired in the song. I’d extend that last break for a few more bars if I could because musically the song deserves it!
Your voice flows really well over the 5/4.
Thanks Bisto for your kind comments.
Singing over the 5/4 sections was hellishly difficult and was the main reason it had remained unrecorded til now.
I may well do an “extended” version. Will post it on here.
Yes, I can appreciate being able to sing naturally and fluidly over that 5/4 beat isn’t easy.
I liked that @Askwith, that gravy fellow knows his stuff, I can’t do a better review. Will give it a couple more listens tomorrow.
Reminds me of when every six weeks I used to have to take turns with the 5 other electricians on my firm and do a week of evening and weekend call-outs on top of my usual week’s work.
Scared myself shitless one night driving back to Watford from beyond Heathrow in the very early hours. Heater off, windows all open and radio up loud. Started hallucinating all sorts of weird stuff from sheer tiredness. Nearly went the wrong way round a roundabout because I thought it was a fork in the road.
Another night I was a few hundred yards from home and bed, after a midnight call-out to Notting Hill, and I got another call to go back about half a mile from where I’d just left.
