Live at the Wiltern 2002 (Los Angeles)
On the Forty Licks tour The Stones played theatres in a number of cities worldwide. In certain cities they would play a stadium show, an arena show and a theatre show.
I was lucky enough to see 4 of these theatre shows, all in different countries. Boston, Stockholm, London and Utrecht. It was amazing to see them close in such intimate venies, some of my most memorable concert going experiences.
They did more interesting setlists too, Mick is never going to leave out all the hits, but at this show they didn’t play Satisfaction. Miss You or Sympathy for the Devil to name but 3. This is one of those theatre shows with a pretty interesting setlist. No Parachute Woman though which I heard in Boston. š

CDs and Vinyl live! Available on both formats, CD is a steal in the UK. Can’t post the links for some reason
Junior Wells says
How did you manage that – 4 countries and each time the theatre shows?
dai says
Some friends got me tickets for the 2002 show in Boston. In 2003 I was living in Switzerland so it was relatively easy to get to the other countries just needed to be diligent as to when the tickets would go on sale, often at very unsocial hours. I was also a member of an online Stones group and we would help each other out. Including stadium and arena shows I saw 11 Stones gigs that summer, including 2 more countries, France and Switzerland!
Junior Wells says
Reward for effort and geographical proximity.
The most I have seen was 4 shows of a tour , admittedly rapid succession as all in Oz but I found all the performances blurring. The patter , the moves , all a bandās tropes became more glaring.
Still Iād gave taken 4 Stones theatre shows in 4 countries anytime.
Baron Harkonnen says
They do Neighbours Junior could be a favourite of yours or not.
dai says
I saw them play 50 different songs over that summer, but The Stones are the type of band that can deliver familiar songs in such a way that some nights when they really gel you get a different experience compared to going through the motions (relatively), why I kept going back for more
Vincent says
That’s a perfectly good set. I (genuinely) love it when artists have such a back catalogue that they have to leave out a few classics as there are other classics or surprises to fit into the set. Keeps a gig interesting.
Everygoodboydeservesfruita says
I have not seen them very much and a slightly detached observer but it seems odd to me that they ignore so much of their Brian Jones era material. Where is She’s a Rainbow? Is Paint it Black often in their set? Is Mick embarrassed by the slightly gauche lyrics? Where is Time is On My Side? 19th Nervous Breakdown? Get Off My Cloud? How often do these occur?
Hawkfall says
Not so frequently, but to be honest they’ve been ignoring the Brian Jones era since 1972 or so. If you look at the set list from things like Brussels Affair or Ladies and Gentlemen, then they have very few 60s stuff: Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Sympathy for the Devil and Midnight Rambler and that’s about it.
In the last 10 years’ they’ve played stuff like Let’s Spend the Night Together, Ruby Tuesday, She’s a Rainbow and a few others, but they’re not regulars.

Nanker Phelge lives!
Hawkfall says
He probably still has more writing credits than poor old Woody.
dai says
Are you basing this on one live album setlist?
All have been played, expect (I think) Time is On My Side relatively recently (this century). She’s a Rainbow has only been played live a handful of times in their history. Paint it Black has been played many times this century. I have seen The Stones 28 times since 1982, my spread sheet (oh yes!), tells me I have heard at least one song live from every studio album with 2 exceptions Satanic Majesties and Dirty Work (not counting the last 2 albums). I missed She’s a Rainbow when it was played (internet request I think).
As these days they play less than 20 songs a night then they have to leave quite a lot out from a 60 year career. Some will always want certain songs to be played, but that means others won’t be.
This is the setlist from the last full show they played (Berlin 2022), it includes Paint it Black
Street Fighting Man
All Down The Line
Tumbling Dice
Rocks Off
Out Of Time
Fool To Cry
You Can’t Always Get What You Want
Ghost Town
Honky Tonk Women
You Got The Silver (Keith)
Happy (Keith)
Miss You
Midnight Rambler
Paint It Black
Start Me Up
Gimme Shelter
Jumping Jack Flash
Sympathy For The Devil
Satisfaction
At least 5 tracks from Brian Jones era (up to Beggars Banquet) He also played on You Got the Silver and Sympathy on Let it Bleed so we get 7 actually in this setlist
ivan says
In fairness, they ignore a lot of the Ronnie Wood era as well…
i remember having a post gig pint after this show

and working out very little from Woody’s era!
dai says
Depends on the show/tour. Some Girls has been a large source of their live material. Think I have heard 7 or 8 different tracks from that album live. I consider it the most Ron album they have released, his first full one with the band.
ivan says
Yes of course, and at the risk of a Python-esque ‘yeah, but APART from Some Girls…’ you’re right.
Mind you, if you were to compare each setlist for Mick Taylor years v Ron Wood years, that’d tell quite the story.
dai says
In general, yes, as most would agree their peak was from Beggars Banquet to Exile on Main St where Taylor was present on 3 of those albums so they come up a lot.
Just making a point that their setlists are not always as predictable as some suggest, perhaps a bit more these days for obvious reasons, but there is still the odd curveball.
Here’s a show I saw in Boston, MA in 1999, 19 songs and 13 different albums represented (9 from Ron W era, maybe 10 if we include IORR which he allegedly wrote)! In total I have seen them play 114 different songs which would be less than, say, Springsteen, over a similar no. of shows, but more than many acts of their vintage
Jumping Jack Flash
Bitch
You Got Me Rocking
Respectable
Honky Tonk Women
Memory Motel
Saint of Me
Some Girls
Paint It Black
You Got The Silver (Keith)
Before They Make Me Run (Keith)
Out Of Control
Route 66 (B-stage)
When The Whip Comes Down (B-stage)
Midnight Rambler (B-stage)
Tumbling Dice
It’s Only Rock’n Roll
Start Me Up
Brown Sugar

RayX says
Arenāt the Rolling Stones just a tribute band these days? Two fifths of the original line up remain and one of those mimes his guitar playing to the tunes an out of sight musician is playing
dai says
Yeah “new boy” Ronnie Wood only been in the band 48 years
RayX says
What part of āoriginalā do you not understand?
Junior Wells says
But 48 years is substantial. In fact how long have the rest of them been playing as part of the unit ? Tribute band is just a bit too cute.
Diddley Farquar says
Ignore the troll. They just released an acclaimed album of new material. I think we’re better than trotting out idle rumours. Maybe it’s time to revisit the mars bar incident?
pencilsqueezer says
By this criteria they have been tribute band since Brian Jones died. Did The Allman Brothers Band become a tribute band subsequent to Duane Allman’s death? etc etc etc…
dai says
And the “guy out of sight” must be well trained because he fucks up in all the places where Keith used to fuck up.
retropath2 says
Original members, eh? You mean Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, Dick Taylor and Tony Chapman, then?
dai says
For a new guy here you are a bit of a **** aren’t you?
MC Escher says
That’s four stars, quite a good review.
RayX says
Bought the first edition of Word and every subsequent edition. Been a lurker on every format of the on- line forum.
Not as many years as Ron Wood but I do look much better than him, in fact who doesnāt?
Do you have to spend time as an apprentice before posting an opinion, whether or not it is right, wrong, justified or moaning?
Junior Wells says
Point well made. I don’t think contributors should be chipped for being newbies, especially as we want more contributors.
I think @dai should amend his comment to “you’re a bit of a **** aren’t you?
Everyone should be happy then.
dai says
Not sure why someone joins this “community” after so long and then seems to be here mainly for confrontation and stirring things up (on a number of different threads), rather strange behaviour.
Junior Wells says
He appears to know his music. Heās got strong opinions. Weāve had plenty of them. Could probably do with more.
dai says
Fine to have opinions. I think less so to troll and insult other posters
Moose the Mooche says
Bring back Tahir!
Jaygee says
@Junior-Wells
Well everybody except the highly secretive cabal of hardcore anti-contraction AWers of which, having revealed its exixtence, I am about to be deposed as leader
