Wow. Six weeks ago polls showed Voldemortian Liberal Peter Dutton romping it in, to the point where he was making quips about moving into Kirribilli house, the Prime Minister’s residence. Last night saw one of the most extraordinary election results in Australia’s history as the incumbent Labour government was returned to power with a huge majority and the Libs booted into oblivion.
Even more satisfyingly, Dutton lost his own seat (Dickson, where I live).
Dutton’s campaign was bizarre, the Libs being so smug and self assured of victory that they seemingly couldn’t bother stringing any policies together. Dutton had also spent the early part of the year aligning himself with Trump, then rapidly back-pedalling once the tariff wars started. If we can thank Trump for anything, it is whisking away the curtain and revealing the insanity of neo-conservative politics.

Yes, very pleasing result. Dutton clearly a complete disaster but we’ve seen some absolute bell ends get elected in the past, so you can never be 100% confident until it’s all confirmed.
Yes that was a very pleasing election night in front of the telly. Thank God Dutton’s gone, where do the Australian Liberals get these dorks? Dutton, Morrison, Abbott, all just absolute twats. And if they elect Angus Taylor as the new leader they’ll continue the tradition.
I was proud of my country who plainly chose proper, liberal-democratic, dare I say, empathetic politics, over the belligerent trumpian approach. I think both leaders showed graciousness and dignity in their respective speeches – which showed that that message is hitting home. We are not the USA and don’t want any part of that nonsense – and the Australian Liberal party are going to have to reflect on that and make appropriate changes if they ever want to win- particularly the urban seats – back.
Much, much better than the English version
I say, old chap, how does one apply for citizenship? Blighty is going to the dogs.
It’s often been observed that the Australian public don’t vote new governments in, they vote old governments out.
Last night might have been the first time they voted the opposition out.
For Antipodeans. PHIL COOREY a pro Tory journo from the AFR.
Sounds very similar to the Canadian election, except the Tories weren’t wiped out here, they just came second
Some good reading this morning also about the result being a reflection of a waning influence of right-leaning mainstream media (which most Sydney press is at least). We all know at a gut level that not many of us watch free-to-air TV any more; this result proved that the Libs had been in an increasingly small echo chamber, particularly with Dutton favouring the loonier fringes like Sky News After Dark.
Not one to gloat …. oh go on then !!
This media watch program had a fun end segment showing Sky and the other right-wing media getting it hopelessly wrong. It starts about 3.20 in to the 5 minute show.
