New talent show on Sky 1 starting tonight. Kind of intrigued by how this will work out – but got to be worth a look. I’m sure the contestants will manage to get some melismatics in there somehow.

I wonder if there will be any rhythm guitarists in the running. Probably not, most underrated player normally.
Worth a watch though for the faces pulled by the contestants I suspect.
Surely any self-respecting young guitarist would rather join or form a band and just gig the shit out of it until they get good enough to be noticed or else settle for making a living out of it and being a musician in their own right rather than be branded for life as a competition winner?
Probably the shittest idea I’ve ever heard of.
Beautifully put Jim.
I suspect it will be full of widdly, widdly plank spankers (TMFTL?) and not anyone who can play different styles, construct a solo, accompany a song, etc
Hey, ho.
Guitar wank offs, as per your local Saturday afternoon music store, will surely abound….another unbelievably duff and dull idea
Wasn’t there a Channel 4 ‘indie band’ version of this judged by Alex James and Jo Whiley or summat.
Or was that a cheesy dream I had?
Ah yes. Orange Unsigned! It was just a Battle of the Bands on tv really.
Wikipedia gives us a list of the finalists. I think ‘Revenue’ might just be the most fantastically dull band name I’ve ever heard.
Envy & Other Sins
Revenue
Mancini
Ginger Bread Men
Bad Robots
Scarlet Harlots
Hip Parade
Tommy Reilly
See now you mention some of the names I recall ‘Bad Robots’ – but just that name being dull, nothing else
Hey come on, It’s got Edith Bowman hosting!!!
Oh
Probably well known, but worth posting, just for the delightful expression in his eyes:
Oh cock. It would have been even better if it had been the clip I meant to post.
Personally I wouldn’t waste a second of my time on a programme like this. I know it will be garbage and not even worth the effort of pressing the button on the remote. I suppose someone must like this crap otherwise they wouldn’t make it? I have no desire to sneer at no hopers or see failures cry, which is the whole point, isn’t it?
The last Mojo magazine had a small feature on this programme positing that Edith Bowman “…should know a thing or two about guitarists” as (as far as I understand it) she had been to Glastonbury and has listened to a lot of Jeff Buckley (“Though I never saw him live”).
In similar fashion I shall be presenting the next series of the Great British Bake Off on the grounds that I have eaten a lot of cake, and have a favourite sandwich.
it wasn’t as bad as I feared, inevitably Edith Bowman’s presence was pointless, she added nothing at all, but the guitarists themselves were quite an eclectic bunch, styles including classical, blues, jazz, and rock. Due to there being no accompaniment, there was much slapping of guitar bodies, fretboards and strings and use of John Martyn type echo and other effects pedals. One acoustic versin of ‘Isn’t she lovely’ and one electric instrumental version of ‘Hocus Pocus’. There was a wide range of guitars on show, and even fairly insightful comments from the judges, who were forced to stand amongst the audience in a clearly anti-X Factor manner. I might watch the next one.
Well, I found it quite passable. But what do I know, I only watched it.
As the chap who started this thread I have to hang my head and say I didn’t watch it. To be honest I wasn’t allowed – when I suggested it Mrs F sent me to my room with no dinner to think about how selfish I am for thinking normal people might want to watch a program about guitars.
I will try to catch it at some point and just to try and tempt the Twangster – Lee Rintenour is involved as a tutor (go on you want to watch it now don’t you).
The fact that Nitin Sawnhey is involved also gives it a bit of cred methinks
Hey am I the only one thinking this show is working out quite nicely? The guy playing the looped Boddhisatva tonight was great. Could do without some of the electric shredding (although it is minimal) but overall given the paucity of music on TV at the moment this is a good watch.
