I’ll start. This latest brouhaha is once again allowing the media to divert public attention from their non-productive asset-stripping mates, who are seeing how much they can personally profit by being in control of a nation state and most of its media outlets.. Nurses get a 1% pay rise. No worries old son – the Daily Expess can devote half a dozen pages to Meg saying that she’s not 100% on board with the Royal Family.
Bob Mortimer has an occasional imaginary scene in Athletico Mince where recidivist unsuccessful football managers meet for a regular lunch together, celebrating about how much money they were able to fleece from hapless football clubs across the land this month. The managers have all managed many clubs and somehow still command huge earnings. They carry on because it’s so very lucrative. The actual football games and the fans is way, way down their list of priorities.
The royal family’s problems are not importantt and it isn’t News. We have been conditioned over decades to think it’s important but it’s thunderingly obvious that they don’t matter at all.
The Oprah interview is not exactly going to be a Jeremy Kyle-type affair but we’re watching self-centred, sponging thickos whining about how shit their lives are and turning on their family for our entertainment. In my lifetime, I think we will see shows like this where other royal family members are watching in an adjacent room and they will burst in. This is the arena we’re in. It’s entertainment.
I expect the PM will meet the Queen next Thursday and thank her. Not for the first time she will grimly concede that this is her role.
