Even allowing for the fact that there’s a little bit of distortion on the tape, is this the worst ever live vocal performance?
Check out the moment at 56″ – it’s magic.
Can anyone find anything worse than this??
Musings on the byways of popular culture
I’ll see your Kevin Rowland and raise you with one Paul Young…..
I believe Paul Young’s voice “retired” many years ago. Sadly, Amy Winehouse, in her decline, was painful to listen to.
I think the band are playing deliberately in a high key to piss him off.
I think my cat could sing better than this.

Yep this ws my first thought although I would go for I Am The Resurrection where you can hear the nails being hammered into their coffin

To be fair, Kevin Rowland is a unique singer but not a great vocalist.
I have millions of live boots from that same era and he’s never as bad as this on any of them.
The early 80s were rife with really flat vocals, it was the defacto style. I don’t think Kevin is any worse than most of the others from this time.
Even some great records – for example The Story of the Blues by Wah! (or whatever they were called for that single) is epically “out” both vocally and instrumentally. It’s easier to notice now we’ve had 20 years of everything being perfectly in tune.
Vocal harmonies where something is amiss seem to irritate me the most. Some examples:
Jesus Nailed My Sins Upon The Tree – McIntosh Ross (amazingly I don’t think it’s either of the main protagonists, but the third vocalist who screws it up; also an amusingly surreal slant on God-bothering)
Disembodied Voices – The Finn Brothers (the only track on the LP not produced by Mitchell Froom, who has perfect pitch and would never have let this one past)
You Take Me Up – The Thompson Twins (holy moly, the backing vocals are bad… “Cry Boy! Cry Boy!”)
At the risk of further upsetting Rob C, Donovan at the 2011 Folk Awards was not great, albeit I wouldn’t claim that it is the worse ever.
Yeah, but he invented ‘offkey’ doncha know?
That’s not off-key, that’s Mr D adding a bit of Jazz.
Donovan once met John Coltrane and sung him a couple of phrases that actually turned up on A Love Supreme
No contest. I am looking forward to the Florence film with Meryl Streep & Hugh Grant.
Who plays the machine? Bit young for a biopic, isn’t she?
Saw The Voice Of A Generation a couple of years ago. Of course, he is Truly A Great Artist. I had to remember that. Otherwise, I might have giggled a couple of times. Which, of course, I didn’t.
C’mon, Bieber’s not that bad…
It’s Dexys so of course it’s pish.
Oi you. Ootside. Jaikets aff.
Sorry man, but really? I allas thought Rowlands was having a joke and taking the pish.
