Ta.
The rainbow is coming indeed.
Loved the first two albums, Bang! was ok but then they disappeared off my radar. What did I miss?
I hope Jumbo is on 2LP, it’s long (54 mins) and could do with the extra grooves. It’s not, though.
Every time I hear Bang! I think “I should play that more often” but never do.
Egyptology contained ‘She’s The One’ which a certain R. Williams covered (you might have heard it). It’s alright. Gigs were good.
Dumbing Up was pretty good. Amanda Kramer (she now of P. Furs) was in the band.
2012’s 5CD Arkeology was bonkers but great. A few b-sides, mostly unreleased odds and ends.
This is GREAT news, love World Party, Karl Wallinger was a genius!
I’m in for the LPs, I think I have Private Revolution on vinyl but not the rest.
Are the CDs coming with extras Steve?
I dunno. From the little I can find, I think the CDs are straight-up re-releases of the Papillon remasters. Meaning Bang! has the cartoon cover and Dumbing Up has the revised tracklist. But don’t quote me on it.
There are loads of great b-sides from the first 3 albums which have never been on CD, not even the Arkeology box, they could easily be compiled.
After a bit more digging, it looks like no CDs (as KW hates CDs, apparently).
“Vinyl or online” and he was considering making b-sides & demos / live tracks available. Presumably as downloads, as he was also considering making each vinyl a double, but that didn’t happen.
Hmm, might have to get these. Great band. Didn’t Karl Wallinger have a nasty health scare some years back now? Anyone know how he’s been since?
He played a gig at the Albert Hall off the back of Arkeology but since then nothing.
I was there. It was very good. When all this is over, it would be great to see him playing more. If only…
I saw World Party at the Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea. It was 2013 according to google.
I doubt there were 100 people there, but it was a fantastic gig.
That Albert Hall youtube clip sounds wonderful. How fantastic to see that simple thing, great tunes played well. Can’t describe it any better than that really.
An aneurysm that left him unable to speak (in 2001) took him out for 5 years. There was a fair bit of touring from 2006 to 2015.
It appears I don’t have the 2013 live album.
Update: live album available from website (it wasn’t the last time I looked). Now ordered.
I’m a fan too. I saw him play when he was in Mike Scott’s band . 1986. Local village hall in Angus, Scotland. We locals couldn’t believe it. I think it was just after the hit too.
More detail (found by trawling the FB news feed: Mr Wallinger, please update your website, 2015 is no longer news):
“first four albums on vinyl – great to be doing a total vinyl re-issue! Dumbing Up seems to have become a double album – a merger of both uk and us versions”
I saw him at Glee Birmingham post illness and he was fine.
All of his albums are great but it seems these new releases wont have extras on the physical product but will be available with a code from his website which is a new way of doing things I guess.
A great talent and this has prompted me to get the Arkeology box out at the weekend.
Here`s a great song fromWP from a treasure of great songs:
God On My Side – at the time I assumed it was about Iran. Now I think it’s about America. Thoughts?
One of my only rock and roll tales involves World Party.
They played Leeds Uni in 1987 and as I was at Bradford Uni me and a couple of mates went over to see them. This was before they had any hits.
There were 10 people in the audience and KW came into the loo and had a pee next to me before the show. I thought that would be the limit of my connection…I was wrong.
After the gig the whole audience went backstage and shared the rider and I got my ticket signed.
Still have it.
