Apologies to those who are far enough ahead of the UK to have started their rounds already. I should have started this thread earlier.

The first hole will be Wordle #1323.

  2. I appreciate that this might be an unpopular post, but is there any ruling or consensus on hard mode as a requirement? I recall it cropping up as an issue towards the end of last month’s competition so I thought I’d float it for discussion as early as I could this month. Obviously the asterisk or absence of it allows this to be seen on every post but I just wondered whether there are any strong opinions on the subject. The golf metaphor attached to these threads has obviously triggered my temporarily buried stickler instincts.

    • I recall a bit of a debate on this and just as much debate about whether it is actually harder. If all you want to do is not fail each time, then using 15 letter in you first three goes will probably help. But if you want a low score, I think you’d be mad not to play in the hard mode.

      • I agree with all that. I always play in hard mode.

        I occasionally think – with 20:20 hindsight – that I ought to have turned hard mode off and ignored the already revealed letters so I could play a word to eliminate a load of possibilities for the remaining letter(s). And if I ever have the presence of mind to do this, I wouldn’t think it was unsporting.

        Does anyone disagree?

        I do, however, think we have a general consensus that people shouldn’t look at the thread before they have completed that day’s puzzle. Is this so?

        And there is no rule about whether you should select your opening word based on whatever blather comes out of your wireless when you turn it on, the contents of your first spoonful of Alphabetti Spaghetti or your steely-eyed determination to get the lowest possible score. That is entirely a matter for you.

    And yes Clive we did see a pod of whales. And porpoises and dolphins. No sharks though.
    And we had 4 encounters with marlins. One just tracked us but 3 struck us, with 2 puncturing the hull so had to do repairs in the water. The second marlin strike was huge, he was at least 10 feet. I’ll post a vid if I can work out how to do it.

    • So, you rowed across the Atlantic, got attacked by a gigantic sea-monster, came home and did Wordle in 3 two days running ? That’s nothing…
      Just this very morning I split some logs for the wood-burner, got a large splinter in my hand and decided not to go for a walk in the vineyards because it looks like rain. I too have scored successive birdies in February. Do I get “Well done” or “Brave lad”? No, I do not.

    Bouncing back with a fortunate eagle today. It could have been a disaster but for a lucky guess.

        • If you play the “Leedsboy Way” i.e. a good starter, a cunning use of repeated letters and the brain the size of a planet, a run of birdies is only to be expected (and deserved).
          It is generally accepted, however, that eagles must by their very nature be “lucky.” Although my Random Starter Method is not the most efficient way of playing, I have played over nine hundred times and struck eagle gold on 27 of those occasions, roughly 3%.

          • To be perfectly frank, with hindsight, I can’t believe I went with my 3rd guess over the 4th guess. One of these words is far more likely and it wasn’t my 3rd.
