  10. As we embark on a new tournament, I should let you know that I have had several fireside chats with Spoonie over the last couple of weeks. Don’t get me wrong, he enjoys his visits to NZ very much (particularly my sugar bowl!) but they’ve been rather too frequent for my liking.

    The upshot is that he thinks I have been very naive – particularly as the one of the Southern hemmo people that tend to put theirs down early on. Basically, I choose a starter word and normally stick with it. Sometimes I even disclose what it is. Spoonie shook his “head” and said “no no no … on no account should you ever do that!”.

    He went on to explain that if I tell everyone what my starter word is …then those that follow me are helped enormously! Oh.

    “Even if you DON”T tell anyone what it is, if you don’t change it, it won’t take long to work it out! You MUST change your starter word every day, you idiot!”. Right.

    Aha! But what if I SAY I’m going to change my starter word and then I don’t actually do it…?
    His response was withering – “God, you REALLY are crap at this, aren’t you? I give up!”

    An eavesdropping Gyles Brandreth pulled up a chair and joined us.
    “My dear boy…” he said kindly, with his sideways smile and a twinkle in both of his glass eyes.
    “To make it fayuh, you need to have ALL the contestants agree to use different starter words every day!”

    I have always liked Gyles so I am going to take his advice and change my starter word every day.
    Or am I?

  11. Extraordinary second shot – don’t recall having all the right letters in the wrong places before.
    Just to let you know I might only get as far as 5th September and might have to bail for a few days and do retrospectively. Off to the 5 Stans and am told there is no internet. In Turkmenistan:
