My pals the Wooka-ladies were filmed in performance for, how shall I put this, ‘an extra-local broadcast in the not too distant’, last Saturday, in front of a select coterie of their greatest fans, closest family members and assorted people who had nothing much else to do on a wet and miserable Saturday afternoon in Belfast.
Unfortunately, I can tell you nothing whatsoever about the show, as the Wooka contracts suggest that if a word is breathed to anyone, a crack squad of BBC hitmen led by a figure like, say, Alan Yentob flying in with his Bond-villain cat at colossal expense will descend upon all their houses, sieze all their belongings and throw them in prison, never to see daylight again. Similarly, once the show is broadcast and available for anyone to see, they must not mention it for months to anyone. (You think I’m making this up?)
Meanwhile, here are Wookalily with no frills and not much amplication, filmed in a disused warehouse by an amateur enthusiast.

They sound excellent and well worth investigating.
(When I saw Wooka in the headline I thought they were some kind of Star Wars Wookie tribute band!)
A Wookie tribute band with a radical anarchist agenda would be Chewbaccawacca. Wouldn’t it? Just me, then.
That’s the spirit, Fatz! Wook-Adele (guitar) writes the songs and Wooka-Lindsay (a mere 23), to my ears, is a vocal wow. She took up bass only four or five months ago, because Wooka-Shazza (banjo, lead guitar, bass) couldn’t do everything at once. I’m in awe at anyone who can sing and play bass.
Their album ‘All The Waiting While’ (2015) is terrific. This is ‘Ghost’, a non-album single:

Smashing!
When do they release an…. erm….LP?
They did, last year I think. I have a copy. It’s called All The Waiting While and it’s pretty good. I saw them in late January at the Black Box in Belfast and I noticed that Lindsay plays Sharon’s bass upside down as she is left handed
Indeed, imagine how EVEN GREATER Londsay would be if she were right-handed… 🙂
Actually, the violin bass in the first (most recent) clip is Lindsay’s own. I don’t think its a homage to Macca – more a case of the convenience of the shape (i.e. no awkward jutting out bit getting in the way when it’s turned upside down – as even the violin bass is, if you look at the strings).
All the waiting while is on Spotify, so many of us can give them a listen.
Nice work in giving a talented, young, local band a bit of a boost here on the AW, Colin. That’s one of the things this site is really good for.
