KFD posted this in the Sth African music love-in thread but I had intended to write about this song, album artist and this clip may get lost in there.
Kyle Shepherd is a South African composer arranger and pianist. He lives and performs in South Africa but also makes a living writing snd producing music for Hollywood.
His last release, that I am aware of was 2 sides of solo piano created in the depths of COVID.
That album and this are on the wonderful ,vinyl only, Matsuli label that I have championed on here a few times.Chris Albertyn and Matt Temple are Sth Africans with a great love of Sth African, nay, African music with 70’s Sth African is their focus. Most of their catalogue is reissues of unavailable classics, remastered, wonderful liner notes, thick solid cardboard and heavy vinyl. And most honourably they go to considerable effort to locate the musicians or their survivors to ensure they get proper royalties.
This latest album, A Dance More Sweetly Played, was recorded live in Cape Town and the sound is wonderful. I played it on a radio show and a mate while drivinhg in his car commented on how good it sounded – maybe it was in contrast to what came before of after.
Anyway here is their interpretation of Massive Attack’s Teardrop.
I think it is wonderful.

I was quite delighted when i stumbled across Lyle Shepherd’s version of Teardrop, Junior.
And I’m dead chuffed that you share my enthusiasm.
Interesting to read that he does soundtracks.
Fascinating chap.
Here he is talking bout his musical background.
And now Abdullah Ibrahim…
A tribute to Zim Ngqawana from kyle’s debut album.

Excellent. Nice fat drums, too.
Matsuli isn’t ‘vinyl only’ Junes, I’ve downloaded stuff from them and looked at it very carefully – the music I’ve got from them is made entirely of ones and zeros!
Yes correct – vinyl and downloads. Just no CD s.
First thing I do with new vinyl – rip it to CD!
First thing I do with new CDs is rip them to ones and zeroes.
I do sometimes play the CDs though.
Gorgeous music. Thanks for the introduction to Kyle Shepherd
