…and Elvis Costello, and certain other artists? I put stuff on my Moto phone and some albums have missing artwork. The bizarre thing is that it will not allow any artwork by some artists – eg every Dan album is blank… Any explanations/suggestions?

I presume you mean Google Play Music, the player bundled with most Android phones?
The app will be using Google’s own music store to obtain artwork, based on your files’ tags. Artwork won’t appear if either the album isn’t on the store at all, or if the album title is sufficiently different enough from yours to fail to trigger a match. That’s assuming that you have the artist and album title tags populated with the correct data.
A simple fix is to embed the correct artwork in each file prior to transferring them to your phone.

Ooh yes … That’s working nicely thank you … I’d still like to know why it does that .. and why it also arbitrarily splits up some albums.. and there are some albums the tag editor can’t find artwork for ie Aswad Showcase and others not that obscure … but thank you
As for albums being split up – that will be due to inconsistent tagging across an album.
Things to watch are the Artist, Album Artist, Album Title, Genre and the Compilation flag. If the Album Artist tag isn’t set, then the Artist tag needs to be identical across all tracks. If the artist does vary (eg. it contains the occasional guest artist on just some tracks), then set a consistent Album Artist tag across all tracks instead, as that takes precedence if it exists.
What I don’t understand is why albums that were ok get split up by iTunes. It must corrupt the tags somehow. Reuniting them is sometimes impossible.
Not being an iTunes user myself, I think JQW has the answer above. One/some of the tracks in a folder (i.e. album) have one/some of the tags left empty and iTunes has a guess (and invariably gets it wrong).
MP3tag really is an excellent little widget, considering the price of entry (free).
Butbutbut … you can tag everything in iTunes. You can tag “songs” individually or in batches.
From what I understand, iTunes updates its database.
Mp3tag updates the tags in the files.
Natively-tagged files can be scanned by any device/player and the database results will be identical. So you won’t repeatedly encounter this ‘feature’.
Apple made some sort of change to the way that iTunes handles multiple albums of the same name a few years ago, and that seems to have triggered this issue on a select few albums. I’ve also seen the problem with some titles purchased from the iTunes store, caused by inconsistent data in the optional sort fields. Again manually correcting the data will fix things, although a change to the sort fields can sometimes require a restart of iTunes to fix things afterwards.
MP3 files imported from elsewhere can also be a problem, particularly if these files contain both version 1 and version2 ID3 tags at the same time.
Yes, Googleplay Music … But similar problems in Black player and Media Monkey … I have added all the right artwork for all my albums in iTunes … My confusion is why it works for the vast majority but not a few others, and particularly why it seems to single out certain artists – ie EC, Dan, none of whose artwork appears – but others with artwork added same way are fine
When you add artwork in iTunes via the ‘Get Artwork’ option (or whatever it’s called) the artwork isn’t embedded in the audio files, it’s just kept in a separate file elsewhere.
If you want to embed artwork from within iTunes you need to use the artwork tab under “Get Info”, and paste the artwork in there.
It’s well-known within the industry that Google CEO Sundar Pichai is personally behind this issue. “Steely Dan think they’re so clever, and I just wanted to show them I was cleverer. Anyway, I was always a Doobies man, myself. WO-OH-OOOOOH!! LISTEN TO THE MUSIC!!!”
