Talking about Duke Garwood on another thread made me remember how much I used to like reading about the gigs people had coming up.
To kick it off the thread, I did Afghan Whigs at Koko in London a few weeks ago and have tickets for:
Benjamin Booker – Village Underground, London, March 2
Wilko Johnson – The Junction, Cambridge, March 6
James Chance and Les Contortions – Cafe Oto, London, March 10 ( I’m not familiar with Les’s work but I hear good things)
Vintage Trouble – Koko, London, March 31
Duke Garwood – St Pancras Old Church, London, April 16
Wilko Johnson – Shepherds Bush Empire, London, April 26
I’m 50 this year and plan to get out and about a bit more. What about you lot?
I am seeing a band called “Dry the river on Monday & going to see Simple Minds next month. Very much looking forward to both.
The Misunderstood and Kaleidoscope are playing London 3rd April 2015. So that is a possibility. http://www.mojo4music.com/19025/the-misunderstood-and-kaleidoscope-set-for-beat-bespoke-festival/
Not that I know anyone else who would want to go.
And G2Genesis in High Wycombe in March.
And Count Arthur Strong.
And One Man Breaking Bad.
Tomorrow lunchtime is Daylight Music at The Union Chapel.
I shall be watching and listening to half-hour sets by Jo Bartlett, Tir Eolas and Grawl!x while eating delicious quiche and drinking coffee.
I’ll be going to the WIYE Fairport/Sandy Denny talk on March 9th.
Apart from those and possible upcoming mingles I have nothing planned. Which is rather remiss of me, really. I need to get out more.
More spoken word than music – Jon Ronson, Rich Hall, David Sedaris. Musically, Kate Rusby, Thea Gilmore and Carmen at the ENO.
Spoken word AKA comedy here, too.
Travelling over the water to tha’ London in September to see Adam Carolla in the Bloomsbury Theatre. Looking forward to it already!
Unusually, I have something booked…..
Waterboys in November at Portsmouth Guildhall. Must get around to booking WIYE as I’m in That London with a free evening. Also Need to book The Men They Couldn’t Hang and Gretchen Peters who is coming to sunny Worthing!
Costello in Birmingham & Basingstoke
Ash @ Scala
The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band \The Rutles @ Koko
I would commit multiple felonies in order to see the Bonzos….
Off to see the Jesus and Mary Chain next week in Birmingham, which will mean I need a new answer to the “What’s the one band you regret never having seen live?” question. Also have a ticket for the utterly wonderful Twilight Sad who’re playing a tiny venue in Leicester in April, so looking forward to that immensely.
Beyond that, off to see the Foo Fighters at Wembley in the summer as they’re Mrs D’s favourite band. I like them too, but probably would’ve been put off by the stadium prices/experience otherwise.
Haven’t got a ticket yet, but will probably see Thurston Moore in Birmingham in May.
I went to their Brighton show last night . They still sometimes make the most glorious racket. Prepare yourself for a spot of mild tinnitus though.
In just a few hours I will be seeing the magnificent Marty Stuart and his Magnificent Superlatives (and his preposterous hair) at a 1,200-capacity venue. Can’t wait….
I’m feeling like an old fogey as the only gigs I have booked are a reunion tour – Ride – and a 20th anniversary gig – Mogwai. Also going to see Jon Ronson and Music for 18 Musicians.
Music for 18 Musicians was my best gig of 2014. Enveloping.
Really looking forward to it, I’ve never seen anything like that live before.
2015 is bit of a gig desert so far. Not been to any yet, but I have Dr John in a couple of weeks (with my dad!) which should be good. After that, Public Service Broadcasting in April, and then nothing till June, when I have tickets for Gaz Brookfield and the Dead Kennedys (who will probably be rubbish but, you know, it’s the Dead Kennedys). Maybe Laura Marling in May, but I’d like to hear more of the new record first. A couple of festivals bubbling under, but there’s not a lot on at my usual haunts of The Fleece and The Thekla that is attracting me right now.
First post so be kind to me…
Ryan Adams tomorrow in Leicester
YNot festival in July to see Primals and Snoop
Hopefully Glastonbury in June if we can get tickets in the resale and finally just got tickets today to the Saturday of OnBlackheath for Elbow and the Manics.
Only one booked at the moment: Stewart Lee, Reading Hexagon 27 March
Intended to go to some/all of Teenage Cancer Trust, but that week is “doing other stuff” (so I have been informed) and Mr Lee on Friday.
Toying with Hyde Park in June – Blur on 20th and/or The Who/Paul Weller on 26th.
Graham Parker with Brinsley Schwarz at The Sage, Gateshead in April…couldn’t get to last year’s reunion with The Rumour so this is the next best thing.
Only one so far, but the only band that matters progressive rock wise and sans Belew the King Crimson.
Ryan Adams next week
The War on Drugs next weekend
Steve Wynn (solo electric) the week after
Ravi Coltrane Quartet
Rival Sons
Daniel Lanois (first time in 20 years or so)
Mudhoney
King Crimson
Robert Cray
Steve Hackett
The Waterboys
Dave Matthews Band
…and if it works for us, the Dead “Fare Thee Well” weekender.
The Dead “Fare thee well” weekender?
I am envious. Hugely envious.
The Stranglers at The Roundhouse, London, 6th March. Saw them last year at St.Albans and they were ace so well up for this.
Oh yeah, and Nick Cave.
The Stranglers are well worth seeing too, but we may not make it this time. I’m well aware that we are taking chances as the end times are near for them as well as for so many others.
Gretchen Peters, March 17th, at the lovely St. George’s.
Gretchen Peters for me as well, At the Apex in Bury at the end of March. Nowt else at the mo.
Thunder, Hammy Apollo, March
Hawkwind, Shepherds Bush, March
The Who, O2 Arena, March (rescheduled from last year)
and again in Hyde Pk in June
Live Wired (AC/DC tribute band), Shep Bush, April
AC/DC, Wembley Stadium – July
Loads of oldies over next few months, Joan Armourplating, Clapton, both supposedly farewell tours, Ferry, Costello, Blues Band (the latest lot let to play Lichfield Cathedral)
Will have to think about festivals soon. Cambridge looks crap so far, and Cropredy looks almost sort of OK, so maybe the latter. Bearded Theory I wimped out of last year might get my whitsun vote and Lunar Festival at Tanworth-in-Arden also looks worthwhile
With you on Cambridge. So I’m booked to Sidmouth instead – Spiro, Lau and to dance the night away to Blowzabella. Got them in Holmfirth next month too. But first, just got back from Mike McGoldrick, and Johns Doyle and McCusker. Tomorrow it’s the Treacherous Orchestra. Next week John Smith on Friday, The Unthanks on Sunday. Pascal Roge at RNCM, festivals at Chester, Southwell, At The Hall, Cropredy and Shrewsbury, Gryphon, Crimson, Ravel and Rachmaninov season at The Bridgewater.
Keeping busy as usual.
we’ve been playing that Treacherous Orchestra album at work all week. It’s great.
Sounded great live; all eleven musicians clear as a bell, which isn’t always the case with this lot – poor Eamonn Coyne’s banjo struggloing against the duelling bagpipes. I went stone cold sober, not an obvious choice for a Treach gig (though an obvious choice for riding a motorbike), yet was pogoing around at the front like a mad thing.
I’m doing Bearded Theory again this year, and probably Chagstock on Dartmoor.
I am also very taken with the idea of Solarsphere – an astronomy and music festival near Builth Wells, but I am already spoken for that weekend.
http://www.solarsphere.events/index.html
Bonzos and Rutles – cheese and onions! Lucky DF Boy!
I smile every time I think of the impending Bill Kirchen gig at my favourite venue (Tingewick Village Hall). I’ve never seen him before so I’m not sure what to expect but as long apart from great songs but if he does “Don’t Bump Wood” I’ll be the one at the back with a silly grin on my face!
Bill Kitchen in Leeds, Sandy Denny talk, Judith Owen in Bury and the Cheshire feline has reminded me about Blowzabella in Holmfirth.
Kirchen that is.
Barnsley v Crewe today.
Lucky me….
Seriously, only got Evan Dando at Union Chapel next Friday at the moment, so far every other gig I’ve fancied has been a no-no due to other commitments.
The only one booked so far is Calexico at Albert Hall in Manchester at the end of April.
I tried, but failed, to get Nick Cave tickets.
I’d go and see Laura Marling, but the nearest gig is Manchester and it is just a few days before Calexico. I can’t spare two afternoons off work in such close succession. (I’m a bit miffed that she’s playing four gigs in London but only one in the whole north of England.)
“Sigh” Another £25 bites the dust, Calexico at Shepherds Bush.
War on Drugs tonight if I can be arsed
Then have Morrisey, Calexico, Death Cab, Fleetwood Mac, U2, Mogwai, Moon Duo, Public Service Broadcasting, Bryan Ferry & King Crimson lined up so far for the rest of the year
Reading this and Bill Kirchens in the country? WTF!! Why am I wasting my time. GET TICKETS!! As to the q what will he do? Well, he did a sorta best of album, redoing old songs early, I think, last year, so a shedload of Cody and a lot of his subsequent ace output probably. But he will do Hot Rod Lincoln with its excellent run thru’ of every guitarist ever,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsLdufJePz0
Yay, just got a ticket, 10 of our british pounds and the pleasure of a trip to Stourbridge after work!
Jeez, fresh off the Bill K website and the nearest one to me, Moochers (no, me neither) in Stourbridge doesn’t even know he’s playing there yet.
I think it’s becoming more and more important to subscribe to and monitor promoter’s websites and emails than it is to look at venues. This is especially true for smaller acts. I bought my Bill Kirchen ticket back in December thanks to an early heads up from the wonderful people at Empty Room promotions (http://www.empty-rooms.com). My only gripe with them is that, increasingly, they have gigs towards or in Oxford and that’s starting to be a bit too far for me to support.
You must live in my neck of the woods. We used to go to quite a few Empty Rooms gigs but Oxford is too far to make it worthwhile.
Really looking forward to it, I’ve never seen anything like that live before.
3 in Manchester for me – Gretchen Peters, Belle and Sebastian and the ever wonderful Laura Marling. Looking forward to them all
I did also have loads of tickets for the Leicester Comedy Festival over the last fortnight. But was stricken with some stomach bug that was doing the rounds, so missed Nathan Caton, Joe Lycett, Stewart Lee, Jen Brister and James Acaster.
Did manage to see Shappi Khorsandi though before getting too ill to leave the house, and she was very good.
Steven Wilson next month and then nothing booked until King Crimson. (Both in Edinburgh as they both chose to give Newcastle a swerve.)
Tickets for King Crimson in September and Stackridge in December. That’s one more gig than I went to last year. I need to get out more. I intend going to Renaissance in St. Helens in April but as that is a standing gig I will probably pay on the door.
I’d love to go see this latest version of King Crimson but they’re only playing enormo-gigs in my neck of the woods and I just don’t fancy being half a mile away from the band in a huge shed of a place.
Paul Carrack (twice)
Jimmy Webb
Josh Rouse
Midge Ure
Bryan Ferry
Toto
Big Big Train
Go West
……….so far.
Costello in June, checked out my seat at the same venue on Sunday, very poor, crushed up by a wall ! Its put me off now ,
Karl Ove Knausgaard on March 2nd
Robert Macfarlane on March 3rd
http://www.foyles.co.uk/events
Must make an effort to see some live music soon. My last gig was Joanna Gruesome (who were superb).
Karl Ove Knausgaard on March 2nd
Oooooh! Rather jealous. Please report back.
Inexplicably, there are still tickets for the event. It’s an hour – plus probably another hour for him to sign books (he signs his full name)
But I will report back – hopefully with a pic of a signed copy. The latest volume contains some pretty controversial stuff (from what I’ve heard) so it should be interesting.
Yes, I saw! Amazed that it hasn’t sold out. Very tempted to go (and get the book at the same time) but I just don’t think I’ll be able to get there in time.
I’m sure it will be absolutely fascinating. Looking forward to what you think of it (and the book).
Jesus & Mary Chain in Brighton on Monday, when I’ll be 51 and Psychocandy 30yo.
Fleetwood Mac and a bunch of others at the Isle Of Wight festival in June, instigated by my 13 year old daughter’s love of the Mac.
Stiff Little Fingers, Nottingham in March. 36 years since I first saw them. Jake Burns now appears to be at least twice the man he was.
Ryan Adams next week at the Hammersmith/Eventbrite/ Carling/Labatt’s/HMV Odeon Apollo whatever.
Then nothing planned until End of The Road in September.
Just discovered can sneak out to http://lunarfestival.co.uk
Intriguingly elcectic, close and cheap.
Any of the midlands AW up for it?
Airport duties for Bearded, Dan, so no show 2.
Enjoy
no worries, there’s always another year.
Quite like the look of that Lunar Festival. I’m in Bristol so it’s not impossibly distant, but a green card for a third festival this year might be harder to come by…
That is a great line up – more Green Man than Cambridge. Haven’t seen Copey in years and wonder how he’s getting on.
‘fraid the charms of Southwell Folk Festival have already beguiled me that weekend.
The Unthanks this Friday
Texas
Fairport Convention
Fotheringay
Andy Fairweather Low
Dave Kelly
And the usual Christmas show by The Bootleg Beatles.
Quite fancy seeing Robert Cray though too
This is getting expensive. GLW has just had a text from friends: They’re going to see Madness in June at Hove.
Which I shall be watching from our perfectly positioned communal roof terrace (our block of flats is to the side of the cricket ground) . Madness’ll be grand, but sadly, a la 10CC in their Jim Davidson phase, I don’t like cricket.
Add another one: The Replacements, in May.
A band I never got to see back in the day. 25 years or so ago we were living in Edinburgh, and I phoned King Tut’s in Glasgow having heard about the gig: there were tickets on the door. By the time I got through it was sold out… this time, we have tickets booked.
http://thereplacementsofficial.com/pages/concerts
Sara Watkins / Aoife O’Donovan / Sarah Jarosz in Bury in April
Thea Gilmore at RNCM at the end of May I think
Cropredy, first since 2004 I think
Costa Del Folk in Portugal in October. Sounds groovy
I can walk to a Folk Club in just over 5 minutes. They have a gig every month and coming up this season are Jim Causley, Greg Russell & Kieran Algar, The Melrose Quartet
I’m intrigued at Fotheringay playing at Bridgewater Hall Manchester. The remaining original trio plus PJ Wright as Trevor Lucas and Kathryn Roberts & Sally Barker taking the Sandy role. I might give this a go
Bury Met have a strong Folk & Americana programme this year and I’ll probably do my bit to stimulate the local economy
Morrissey in March and the mighty King Crimson in September.
Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) solo concert at the Adelaide Town Hall on March 10.
Nice Mousey. I’m going to Womad…. Yeu ?
No I’m not, but one day I will. Everyone tells me it’s great. My apprehension has always been that after say a day of hearing music I’ll be sick of it, no matter how good it is. Probably stupid but there you go.
What??!! Is no-one else going to see Chic at Manchester Apollo?
(I say Chic because the ticket is billed as Chic but there’s only one left. Should be brilliant anyway. These young kids can play anything these days.)
Response to VB, 2 or 3 up: so thaaats who’s gonna play Sandy ‘n’ Trev, suddenly making it an essential. PJ is fab, whether a sidesman, qv years of Steve Gibbons, Dylan Project, or fronting Little Johnny England. Looking forward to his new band, Trad Aaargh. Nice bloke too. And he wrote the standout track on the Old Codgers latest, Myths and Heroes, the penultimate track, Home, ever a Cropredy singalong song if I heard one. Just before Ledge, I’ll wager.
BTW, Makka Pakka, 2 posts further above, saw the Codgers at Lichfield Cathedral on this years Wintour, and they were good, having, at last, kicked themselves up the arse, rather than old glories. New album distinctly OK. and they only played 4 songs dating from earlier than about 1971, the rest being all the new album and a couple of unrecorded. It worked and Simon looking happier on e;ectric guitar, with less high note gurning than previous.
Just searched for the Fotheringay tour: hard to find, but it’s all on the Fotheringay Faecebook page. All in the fortnight I’m bloody away. Surely they must be invited to a field in Oxon in early August? (Is there a “special guest” yet to be announced? After all, PJ and Conway and, I believe, both Kathryn Roberts and Sally Barker are already there.)
Just booked Fotheringay in Nottingham, could have done the Bridgewater but can’t stand the place. We’re Fairport worth seeing again, as I gave up on them year’s ago.
Hi Hubert, the Nottingham venue is a little village hall in Lowdham holding just a couple of hundred people. Warthog promotions have put on some great gigs in the village. Fairport were really good last year, still splattered in mud from the festival they’d just played. The jokes were still bloody awful though!
M P Thanks for that, sounds an ideal venue beats the Bridgewater.
Gave up on Fairport, but several people have say they’re very good recently.
Just missed ’em in Leeds.
As of now I have Ryan Adams next weekend (although that is in doubt), Gretchen Peters, Unthanks, Toy, Costello and Calexico. Oh and the Who at Hyde Park.
Now that Retropath has alerted me to the Blues Band will try for that and definitely up for Lunar Festival.
Another one off to see Gretchen Peters in a few weeks.
I should be off to Ryan Adams this Friday , but due to an imploding marriage (not mine), that is off the agenda.
Chuck Prophet in May
Tedeschi Trucks in November.
Right now:
The Mastersons, and then Lloyd Cole, both in March.
Long gap. The Knopfler in October.
Under consideration: The Manics
Just to let you know that Ryan Adams was excellent in Leicester last night. Great band in a great venue.
Shortest review ev r ?
Just bought tickets for Josh Rouse at the Stables in April. It’s a bit of a trek and an overnight stay but me and MrsD have been big fans for a long time and have never seen him. I had no idea he was playing in the UK until I saw his name in NiallB’s list, so thanks for that Niall.
Well its good to find you back …and to pass the maths test 🙂
Upcoming for me:
Claudia Brucken
Courtney Barnett
The Vaccines
Public Service Broadcasting
The Monochrome Set
Wire
looking like a good year and that’s only April…. the rebirth was too late to mention Mariachi El Bronx = gig of the year (so far)
Just done Sting / Simon then the Necks.
Next Richard Thompson – first time in Oz with electric trio. Then 2 days later Womadelaide. Big names are aRe Neneh Cherry Youssou, Sineed, the Diabates , Abdullah Ibrahim. Then we slot in a few Byron blues fest sideshows : Zac Brown, Paplo Nutini, Gary Clark Jr. Maybe the Alvin Brothers.
Excuse typing bouncy train.
Gretchen Peters on my bucket list. No sign of her down here yet. Just done some shows at McCabes guitar with Mary Gauthier
Having recently seen Jesus & Mary chain in Leeds we’re off to see Henry Priestman at a village hall near Beverley next weekend, and then Alexei Sayle, John Cooper Clarke and Mark Ellen (of this parish) at our local arts venue, Selby Town Hall. Any Yorkshire Massive going to any of these ?
The only definite at present is Renaissance at the Union Chapel in April although In line with my current policy of not booking ahead unless absolutely necessary, Kate Rusby in Chelmsford the following day is calling. After that, I can be tempted by Public Service Broadcasting in Cambridge the following week and I’m With Her (Sarah Jarosz, Sara Watkins, Aoife O’Donovan) at the Union Chapel a few days later. Could be too greedy though. We’ll see.
All the interesting artists/bands in the world have got together and decided that they’re not going to play Stockholm this year. A complete boycott. I’m very envious when I see all the great acts that are playing the UK in the next few months. In the Swedish capital, things have never been quieter.
1. I have not been to any gigs this year, and don’t have a ticket to anything.
2. (and this is the clincher) Kaisfatdad has not been to any gigs this year, and doesn’t have a ticket to anything. This is very, very unusual indeed. About as likely as an Italian going for a year without pasta.
God. If they knew how the virtual universe hangs on your every review, they’d be queuing up to play your front room.
Odd that .You would think bands will say gee this place is chockers. Let’s play where others aren’t.
Due to us having our first child due in July, we are easing off on the gig front quite a lot at the moment. We were due to see TV On The Radio on Saturday but unfortunately the tour was cancelled.
As such I only have one gig coming up which is to see Nas perform Illmatic in full in June. Could not miss that one!!
2 choice gigs:
The Unthanks @ NCH Dublin
Aoife O’Donovan, Sara Watkins & Sarah Jarouz @ Kilkenny Rhythm & Roots.
——Hey Hey Hey 1st post on new site from the Boptist.
I was pootling about to see if there are any gigs in London on my birthday in a couple of weeks time and it turns out Judith Owen will be at Bush Hall, so that may well be another one for my list.
I don’t tend to bother with gigs much- I prefer the records. But I might go to see Morrissey in Cardiff next month. As long as it’s not too cold.
Belle & Sebastian in Portsmouth in May & as a treat for my 50th Paul Weller in Paris in April (and maybe also in New York in June) other than that a few comedy nights (Stewart Lee, Richard Herring, Tony Hawks)
The only thing i’ve got lined up is Field Day in June, principally to see Ride, Patti Smith and Savages.
Vintage Trouble (twice)
Gary Numan
Just added Ron Sexsmith at London’s Royal Festival Hall on June 30th today. By way of a bonus (a massive bonus) the support act is Ben Watt.
My schedule so far…
Nick Cave at The Sage in April
Bryan Ferry at Bridlington Spa (!) in May
Fleetwood Mac at Leeds Arena in June
The Waterboys at York Barbican in November
Simply Red at Leeds Arena in December (for my beloved, honest!)
Planning to do this……………
It’s festival / farmers market with – usually – bands on the way up who’ll show up somewhere else -Last Year War on Drugs, this year Courtney Barnett, Matthew E White, Father John Misty, Staves, Wave Pictures, Riley Walker………….
If you fancy a smallish fest, it’s the one to do IMHO.
So fr this year, I’ve seen Sally Barker at The Stables in Milton Keynes, Dennis Ellsworth at the Ent Shed in Bedford & Amelia Curran in Brighton. I’ve lined up Postmodern Jukebox at Indigo O2 and Mary Black’s farewell tour at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester. That’s it so far.
Just saw Pond on Friday, who were fun, like a funkified Pink Floyd. Got a ticket for BC Camplight for next week, who I’m very much looking forward to seeing, as his new album is ace & have had his two previous for a few years now. Chamber pop music at it’s best. . Tix for Frisk Frugt later in the month. Hooray for Danish musical oddballs & a new album to buy to boot too. Woo hoo!! Must remember to book tix for both Howe Gelb & The Furrow Collective for next month. Just bought tix for the Babes in Toyland reunion tour in May & my 13 year old wants me to take him to see the Dead Kennedys in June.
