Someone appears to be uploading all the surviving 1971-72 inserts and full programmes of the OGWT at YouTube (thanks to Carol From Luton for the tip).
Here’s an astonishingly animated Gerry Rafferty from 21/12/71. We don’t hear much from him these days.

28 March ’72 – not, perhaps, one of the strongest shows that week. But still – who has ever heard let alone seen film of the John Dummer Blues Band?

Most of ’em became the musicians for Darts, I seem to recall.
He had a hit in France with Nine by Nine in 1970-ish, which soundtracked our summer hols chez notre Famille Nombreuse a Calais

Dave Kelly klaxon!!
I think we can see where Slade got the idea for ‘Coz I Luv You’.
Pretty sure I saw them play my college around 70/71. Possibly supporting Chicken Shack or Brett Marvin & The Thunderbolts or maybe Pink Fairies. I’m old you know.
This more like it – half an hour of filmed insert (from Swiss TV) from a Montreux concert by Chuck Berry (with Willie Dixon) and Bo Diddley, plus T-Bone Walker, for the 20 June 72 edition. Some wayward playing from Chuck – and some fascinating Bez-type moves from him during T-Bone’s slot – but one has to assume it’s only copyright issues that have stopped this one being excerpted or repeated since.

This lady appears to be a much better mover than singer:

Babe Ruth’s The Mexican was one of the most sampled tracks in early hip hop.
Wow! I don’t think I’ve seen or heard Babe Ruth since I saw this go out at the time.
I recall there were a couple of guys at school who were into this band. I think they were on Harvest, signed as part of a new crop of bands to replace their original signings.
Like so much on Harvest they seem to have been signed in the hope that they might make it big: the label philosophy seem to have been throw enough mud onto the wall and some of it will stick.
Someone one brought a copy of a Babe Ruth LP to the record club thing I begrudgingly turn up to once a month. Not an original – a modern re-pressing. It was, to put it finely, awful. Particularly bad was their cover of Zappa’s “King Kong”.
The album had apparently been re-issued due to some rapper covering one of its songs.
I seem to hear Gerry Rafferty in lots of tracks lately…like this Jonathan Wilson album opener. Skip the slow intro to 1:11 to get to the Gerry-sounding parts:
Don’t mind the creepy yoga!
Those piano chords… maybe he’ll get it right next time… 🙂
Y’know, this made me think. Admittedly after a couple of gins and a rather fine red but…
Could OGWT exist today? I’m not sure it could. That’s a very naked performance. And I think back to most of the really good OGWT clips I’ve seen – and especially the RT/LT one – and I can’t see any of today’s acts doing it. Am I wrong? Who’s an OGWT act?
I can see a couple of my faves, Frightened Rabbit and WWPJ, maybe, but past that? Convince me Massive. Could we populate an OGWT?
Not a problem!
Lots of artists from the world of folk, Americana, jazz, ambient, chamber and world music who would fir the bill nicely.
King Creosote, James Yorkston, Juana Molina, Asgeir Truasti, Mum, the Divine Comedy, M Ward…….
I think there would be lots of agents (do they still have agents?), managers and bands eager to let the spotlight on their wares.
Of course it could work. Ditch boring Bob, make it more like 6 Music on telly, get Maconie, Radcliffe, Riley, Coe, Lamacq,Robinson,Hobbs etc to front it and choose the artists, get Late Junction on Radio 3 involved. And no effing Blues.
I’d watch it.
In other words turn it into what we have now? Why?
Rowland Rivron should also be involved, of course.
er…
No. There is no situation on Earth that would be better for that man’s involvement in any way.
I may be a bit thick but where’s the TV show like the one I described on?
Isn’t “Later” just 6 music on TV? It’s what I’ve always assumed. Never listen to 6 – no effin blues …… (and none on Radio 2 after next week)
Exactly.
Loads of smug nobodies watching whoever happens to have album out that week it’s nothing like 6 Music. What I suggested would be 100% better. And still no effing blues!
Don’t get too excited IP! Just because Paul Jones is leaving, it doesn’t mean there won’t be a blues show. Cerys Matthews is taking over the slot, and it is trailed as a blues show.
My T is definitely my c about the blues Count, I prefer my blues perhaps a bit more sophisticated and a bit proggy ie The Groundhogs. With perhaps a bit of Zep thrown in. The rest leaves me cold I’m afraid
