Not sure if this has been done before but here goes.
So, the traditional first dance at your wedding. You want to choose something that suitably either speaks of you and your better half’s total adoration of one another, but also shows all the squares how cool your music taste is.
What was your first dance? Or indeed what would be your first?
For the record mine was God Only Knows. Not easy to shake one’s toosh at, let me tell you.

At a friends wedding in NY waaaay back in the 80s their first song was ‘You’re the Best Thing’ by The Style Council. So, Ive always liked that one.
Band Of Gold is always appropriate. You can follow it up with D.I.V.O.R.C.E. If you hang around a bit Kaisfatdad is preparing 1,639 YouTube clips for this thread, including some elk amusingly lip-synching the Finnish Wedding Song. Which goes something like this:
Olemme naimisissa ja liian humalassa seksiä,
Olemme naimisissa ja liian humalassa seksiä!
(Pidin aina siskosi paremmin)
Olemme naimisissa ja liian humalassa seksiä
You jest about D.I.V.O.R.C.E. At a friends wedding the band started with Ever Fallen In Love (with someone you shouldn’t have) by The Buzzcocks!
Well it was (by choice) that very same Buzzcocks song (from the record) that we kicked off our married life to. (….. and it’s ‘Buzzcocks’ not ‘The Buzzcocks’).
It certainly is – Rookie Error! I hope i don’t lose my AW membership…… 🙁
The members of the band all seem so nice that I can’t imagine even them being annoyed at anyone getting their name very slightly but understandably wrong!
Would maybe Orgasm addict have been better? Hmmm, unsure.
The Nearness of You performed by a Dixie-style jazz band with an average age of 83.
We got married recently & we were not going to do a first dance. However, we did have You Were Made For Me by Freddie & The Dreamers as a back up in case we were under pressure to have one (hey, leave us alone, we both like the daft dance by Mr Garrity – I do it often!)
After a brief thank you speech from me we got heckled with requests for a first dance but I could not get to the the music. A friend of ours stepped up & put on Sweet Harmony by The Beloved which is now a new tune for us. Bloody long though, the best thing about our our choice was it was mercifully short. (I don’t do dancing)
Song for the Asking. A waltz of sorts.
Camarillo Brillo or Dina Moe Hum. You really can’t go wrong with Zappa.
In case there are any ex-lovers in attendance, Broken Hearts Are For Assholes, followed by Suicide Chump, perhaps, just to rub it in.
Not that I’m bitter or anything. Oh no.
I Believe in a Thing Called Love by the Darkness.
Not wishing to diss the original post but I remember incurring the wrath of many of the Massive by describing God Only Knows as a passive-aggressive suicide note.
Three years ago next week, my dear wife and I shuffled around romantically in a small circle in front of a baffled crowd who didn’t recognise Our Song. Here it is, the beautiful Anyone by Joan as Police Woman. The album it came from was one I was just discovering when I met my wife and Joan as Police Woman was one of the first gigs we went to together. I well up every time I hear it…Just wonderful
We eloped. The one we thought we would have had was This Will Be Our Year by The Zombies. Things didn’t work out in the end, but I still consider it the best year (the year of my daughter’s birth)
Mr Drakeygirl and I went for the über cool sounds of Abba’s ‘I Have A Dream’. Yes, the one with the children’s choir on it, which was the cheesiest song we could think of. It made everyone grin and turned into a bit of a mass singalong.
I really loved our wedding day.
Bright Eyes – First Day Of My Life.
Mrs. K and I got up and did a moving acoustic version of The Beautiful South’s Don’t Marry Her (album version).
We got married in Singapore and had a traditional wedding banquet, so no first dance. We did however make our entrance to Ben E King’s “Stand By Me”
We had Ella Fitzgerald’s version of Cheek to Cheek. And very nice it was too.
I’ve recently thought a playlist of great first dance songs would be an interesting listen. Currently putting it together for upload to Mixcloud, but not finished yet so may be revisiting this thread for ideas. I’m avoiding the obvious choices, the idea is to pick fantastic songs which never get chosen.
We had the band play Wings On My Heels by Eddi Reader, as written by my mucker Boo Hewerdine.
“I never was too good at dancing / Somewhere I’d step out of line / But I knew that I had wings on my heels / when they played in three-quarter time”.
Unfortunately the great man couldn’t make the date, so we waltzed around the audience at one of his gigs a couple of weeks before we got hitched.
Luckily, I can waltz. If Boo had written a song about the Tango, it would have all gone very badly.
You Make Me Feel So Young. Our first dance, and my Afterword affirmation.
What about “Never Let Me Go” by Aretha Franklin? I think this is the best version of the song but initially heard Bob Dylan and Joan Baez sing it in a great clip from the Rolling Thunder tour. Another good version if you want something more “modern sounding” (although recorded in 1982 – so probably sounds dated) was done by John Martyn on his “Well Kept Secret” album.
I attended a wedding once as the groom’s sister’s +1.
First song came on. I wasn’t paying much attention because, y’know, alcohol and a date an’ all. “Nah. Surely can’t be…is it?”
Yes it was. joy Division – Love will tear us apart.
Swiftly followed by Boys don’t cry.
The marriage lasted 6 months
Have an Up, Sithere. Has to be the best anti-wedding song yet. Although Skirky’s Beautiful South selection comes a close second.
Can I suggest Let’s face the music and dance sung perhaps by Nat king Cole.
Inspired by this thread I just asked my wife if she remembered the title of the song we chose as our first dance at our wedding four years ago. To my bemusement she replied Elizabethan Reggae by Boris Gardiner. No it bloody wasn’t! It was True Love Travels a Gravel Road by The Highwaymen. Jesus Christ!
We had “My Baby Just Cares For Me” by Nina Simone.
Ours was “When You Say Nothing At All”.
My original suggestion of “F*ck You Hard” by Tenacious D was ignored
“You say it best, when you say nothing at all…”
In other words – “Bloody hell, give it a rest…”
Spot on.
Suppose I should be grateful there isn’t a song called “Oh will you shut up for 5 minutes you gobsh* te. No I don’t want to hear any more interesting facts”
My wife allowed me to choose the music for our first dance & was happy to not know what it was until we got to the dance floor. IMHO, that made her very trusting/brave/foolish.
The record I chose I firmly believe to be one of the coolest & romantic songs ever recorded.
I copied this from you tube so please excuse the first thirty seconds or so.
Herb Alpert – This guys in love with you.
@jackthebiscuit you and your wife are the winners. I love her style and you totally nailed it. Herb Alpert is swoonsville ❤️❤️
bravo. that’s a cracker of a track!
My first wedding didn’t have a first or last dance, difficult to dance when you’re 7 months pregnant. If my current partner and I take the plunge it will have to include us first dancing wildly to “Shake It Off”. Not in one of those awful choreographed YouTube horrors just the sheer exhilaration of literally shaking it off……….
I am reliably informed that a couple with whom I am vaguely acquainted had Paolo Nutini’s Pencil Full of Lead as their first dance.
Quite how the actual dancing went, I am unsure.
21:14 by Cluster. *dabs away a sentimental tear*
This is why we love you.
My last wedding danced off to the Waterboys and How Long Will I love You? Not so long as it happened, sadly a little south of a decade. Hey ho, 3rd time lucky? Bang on the Ear more like….
I can’t remember my own ‘first song’ but I did the music for my daughter’s wedding and the first track was ‘Why Don’t We Get Drunk And Screw’ by Jimmy Buffett.
It was ‘You’re the Best Thing’ by The Style Council. I’m reasonably confident that niscum wasn’t there though.
The wife to be came up the aisle (ahem) to Super Furry Animals’ Fire In My Heart. Which was lovely.
First dance was going to have been Frank Sinatra’s You Make Me Feel So Young (my wife is 12 years younger than me) but in the end we went for a Motown reception. Lets Get It On became the first dance song. My mother in law wasn’t impressed with the choice, but most people turned loved it.
