Partly inspired by Sewbots waspish remarks over on the sister to this strand, let’s hear it for the shockers, preferably by those who should know better, like Willie ‘n’ Waylon………

  3. Eric Burdon & War’s version of “Nights In White Satin” from “The Black Man’s Burdon” was a shocker. Trampled with size 13 hobnails.
    Can’t find a complete version on YouTube, luckily for you.

    • I had no idea this was a cover!

      Until today I only know the song from Mallard’s first album and I’ve never heard it by anyone else. Apparently it was written in 1974 so they must have recorded it very early on (as the album was 1974 as well)

      Whatever thread it’s on, the Mallard version is just brilliant:

        • I recommend both their albums if you’ve never heard them. Pretty easy to find digitally (even iTunes I think) although I’m not sure about CD or vinyl.

          I first came across them at the time due to the musicians being ex-Magic band members ( they’d fallen out apparently, although one of the tracks is co-written by Beefheart). As you can tell from this track, it’s a fair way removed from the Magic Band but both albums are exceptional IMHO.

  6. I kinda like the idea of Willie & Waylon, loaded to the gills, spaced out and freaking off on A Whiter Shade and deciding to cut a version. Mind you, I have no intention to actually make the effort to hear it.

  9. In a strange way (a very strange way) some of William Shatners vocal stylings are weirdly engaging, even (almost) wonderful – Common People being a prime example.
    But this one? Nah
