It’s Saturday night, 11:30pm and I’m shortly off to bed. Back in my younger days the night would be in full swing. Before heading out I’d have showered, picked out some glad rags, and played some songs to get me in the mood for the hours ahead. At various times my Going Out tunes were ‘Rebel Rebel’ and Van Halen’s ‘Jump’, but ultimately I decided on the below. What were your Going Out tunes?

Back in the day it was 1970 by The Stooges.

Back before I had children, this was the tune on the headphones as I left the house…

At one time it was Left to My Devices by the Pet Shop Boys
It was a long time again, but mine was usually “I Feel Good” by James Brown.
Turn it up so loud the house starts to shake
Oh yeah, anything by Bomb the Bass.
We would also dance around in our rooms to ‘Theme from S’ Express’ as a prelude to a full-on night.
Oh and sing along at the top of our voices to the ‘Yeah, yeah-yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah’ s from ‘Megablast’.
I still find myself singing this in the cab as I head out in to the expectant night…
Come on John, get a move on, the pub’s open!
*turns stereo up to 11*

Ah yes, going out! I remember that. Mine was a live single of “I want you to want me” by Cheap Trick!
This was before staying in was the new going out? Anything from the Newcastle City Hall opening salvo of (we’re gonna give you) Pictures at an Exhibition to, a few years later, Hangin’ Around.
It’s the coming home alone maudlin songs that stick tho’, usually plaintive warblings by Cat Stevens

One teenager, so many unfulfilled crushes…..
This was, at the time.
Man I loved that album.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy – Cult
I’m sure we’ve had a thread on this…
‘Going out’?
I’m an afterworder. Don’t insult my social incompetence.
I was going to address the OP’s suggestion you might develop a tolerance beyond UK closing hours and an 11.30 finish. I’ve tried. And failed miserably. In Germany (falling asleep in a bar on the Reeperbahn is not recommended, or on a bucks night in Frankfurt), the US (ditto New York and San Fran) and Australia (before the latest round of lock out laws). From 40 years of hard won experience, it’s all I can do to watch the new years fire works and immediately crash. More likely I fall asleep with the kids after the 9pm fireworks. What a wuss I hear myself say.
Calvin Harris!
48 hours…Clash.
Many, many good nights bought to a shuddering halt with a stomach ulcer and lung cancer scare.
Even after ten years i still find myself looking at the clock late on a Saturday night and thinking…”what would I be doing now”.
Honking up kebab at a taxi rank is of course the correct answer.
This was a contender, long ago.

(The Tubes – White Punks On Dope)
The opposite would have described some of my friends 40 years ago – White Dopes On Punk.
Before venturing out onto the mean streets of Brighton this was essential, sung loudly in the style of Anthony Newley, though to others it may have come across more Brucie.
