I was going to write a diatribe against religious zealots that seem only content when they are killing those who don’t share their fairytales about invisible Dads etc. Yet after a day of horrific news I was moved to tears by this wonderful Nick Lowe lyric at Elvis C’s Basingstoke show last night. It replaced the angry ranting John Lydon screaming PIL’s ‘Religion’ in my head.

Every day of my working life I am in a building which at any one time has 50+ Muslims in it . Some of the blokes have beards, most of the women wear hijabs or headscarves. In ten years of this job, none of them have shown the slightest inclination to kill me or blow me up.
According to a substantial proportion of the mass media, none of the people in this anecote exist.

I live in a city with a large Muslim population – I love the multi cultural breakdown of the city and they are a part of the fabric of the city that I wouldn’t want to see disappear. However even in this city there are Mosques that are espousing the virtues of violent uprising. The moderates within the Muslim community need to help stamp this out. Unfortunately too many of them suffer in silence whether through fear or apathy. One thing is or sure we all need to stand together on this.

The mindless actions of a minority of fans are bringing the club into disrepute.
