As I mentioned on the recently revived and hugely underrated Mick Jagger thread, it sounds like a 70’s B-list punk band and I like it. Sounds nothing at all like the Stones to me. The lyrics too I find very unStonesian. And quite accurate and witty. I’ll probably never listen to it again, mind.
“Trying to write a tune / You better hook me up to Zoom / See my poncey books / Teach myself to cook / Way too much TV / It’s lobotomising me / Think I’ve put on on weight / I’ll have another drink / Then I’ll clean the kitchen sink.”
Clearly his mind is relishing the exercise after ditching his autobiography…..
Funny how, just cos it’s Mick, it’ll get lauded. I saw that Vanbert Morrison got 8/10 in Unshod for his latest.
As this triple is his seventh album in a little over four and a half years, it kind of justifies many of the brickbats being hurled Van’s way on the thread about his latest magnum opus.
Yes, Van.
I’m quoting from Uc**t, @Jaygee. I have not listened and don’t expect I will.
(Just pointing out that 8 is almost universal, 7 just about competent and you’ve got to drop a real turd to only get a 6 if you’re “someone”..)
Yes I saw that too @retropath2 – I also heard a song from new Van album. Very good it was too.Maybe all the doomsayers on here with their crystal balls were talking balls.
Uncut review reckons it is visceral – his righteous anger might be misplaced but if it allows him to make good music I am in.
Best thing he’s done for 30 years? Nah waysville! I like it, it’s fun, but it’s not a patch on the rather brilliant Living in a Ghost Town (which I still listen to regularly) or some of the Blue & Lonesome album (although I never listen to that no more).
Agreed. I had a soft spot for The Professionals, the post-Pistols Jones Cook combo, and this could be one of theirs. Living In A Ghost Town was a good ‘un too, though but.
Good noise, lyrics from a Book Of Rhymes, but unlikely to seek it out again. One hearing is probably enough.
Unless there’s a YouTube thread about duets or bad rhymes sometime in the near future
I don’t see what the problem is, folks.
It’s a bit un-Stonesy but not completely and utterly. Lyrics are not as bad as some here seem to think. It’s not my kind of thing anyway and I won’t need to play it again but I won’t be covering my ears and running away if by chance I hear it again.
It’s good to see Mick really giving it some. He looked like he was having fun.
I haven’t listened to it yet, but judging by the title of the latest Word In Your Ear podcast, “On Jagger’s Ropey New Single …” it seems Messrs Hepworth and Ellen are not fully behind ol’ Micks latest release.
Of course these days Mick is usually in for a slagging, whatever he does, whereas anything Keef does is gonna be at least indulged if not praised.
Thing is that is very much their view, that Keith gets a pass as the authentic one. To knock Mick’s effort is almost pointless though, hardly worth the effort at this late stage.
Poor Mick’s solo career never really recovered after Keef dismissed Goddess in the Doorway as Dogshit in the Doorway

“His most visceral album in years”. Any “most .. in years” will drag you up from an utter cack 6 or a poor and frankly avoidable 7..
@Sewer Robot
Assume you mean the blessed Van.

I know what you mean, SR. Pretty much every record reviewed on the first 4 pages of the mag’s website gets four stars.
Most…xxxxxxxxxxxx….alnum in years is almost as bad as that hoary old chestnut “return to form”

Awaiting my signed vinyl copy with baited breath.
Mick’s singing with that London accent he adopts when he is trying to put some distance from the lyric or the situation: its no “Let’s Work”, tbf.
I’d like to know how much negotiation was there for that “with”.
“No Dave, we can’t give you an ‘and’, but we accept that you are unhappy with ‘featuring’. We propose to meet you in the middle with ‘with'”.
Best thing he’s done for 30 years, probably. I like the punk attitude and the lyrics are a bit of fun. Not to be taken seriously by anyone. Next…
@nickduvet
My thoughts too. Perfectly ok.

I find it hard to imagine the MickMan cleaning his kitchen sink, or doing any other household chores.
He’s obviously Googled ‘what rhymes with easy?’
If Mick had called Street Fighting Man Sink Cleaning Man all those years ago we wouldn’t be having this discussion today.
Other possible Stones’ rebadges include
Sympathy for the Persil
Paint it Shake’n’Vac
Grime is on my Tide
Tumbling Daz
Their Hygienic Majesties Request

Jumping Jack Flash (obvs)
A Bigger Cillit Bang
And all recorded down at Mr Muscle Shoals…
Black and Loo Blue
Or Black And Bloo.
Dead Zoofloras
Toilet Ducksucker Blues

Undercover of the shite
You Can’t Always Get Wash You Want
Chamois Shelter
Steel wools

@Rigid_Digit
Please, God, don’t let Van Morrison read this thread…
Agree with Nick. Enjoyable enough.
don’t mind it. In a Stella street kind of way.
Really awful, am glad Keef (probably) wanted nothing to do with it. I loved Living in a Ghost Town. Solo Mick never seems to work very well.
Sound-wise, this could be a B-side by The Vapors.
When he’s finished cleaning the sink, he might think about some Mr Sheen for those lyrics.
The verse is Shampoo’s Trouble.

Interesting… I don’t think I’ve ever seen that microphone before.
At ease, everyone. My contact at Sound On Sound has identified it as a JZ Vintage 67.

A shame the song isn’t worth the £1125 mic.
I don’t see what the problem is, folks.

We have to remember he is getting close to 80. BLIMEY!!
He’s still way behind Keith. Who is getting close to 800.
Yes, but Keef is immortal. Not so sure about Mick.
Is that a dig at the Beatles towards the end? Michael, let it go!
Hahaha that’s funny as fuck! Good fun too. Man, don’t be so serious!
I can’t wait to read the comments above.

I did listen. I think they nailed it actually and it wasn’t all about saying Keith > Mick.
