Roger Scruton is a bit of a tool about popular music and culture, though occasionally says some interesting things. Though not dead, he is surely rolling in his grave with the rock lord of the mighty Whitesnake being interviewed in the conservative comic. For me, ver ‘Snake lost it once they lost Mick Moody and the whole Tommy Saxondale vibe they conjured, though I am sure becoming Americanised was more conducive to luxury.

It’s probably the “White” bit that they like. Black Sabbath wouldn’t get a look-in. (or indeed a Look-In)
Tory boys used to often have shit music taste. I recall an FCS member i was temping with in the 80s who had a snobbish spin on why progressive rock was better – classical, middle/ upper class, not primitive rhythms, etc – missed the whole thing that it is simply psychedelic music a few years on, or the jazz influences (emerson without jimmy smith – impossible).
Grant Schapps was both a Tory boy and obsessive Redskins fan. He followed them on tour and everything. Kept the quiet from the chaps, natch.
Kick over the statues… except that one of Maggie.
Scruton is a big heavy metal fan (I know) so he probably greatly approves. Though Metallica is his greatest love in the genre.
He’s a great singer and a funny bloke all the same.
I just cannot take Coverdale seriously – for reasons apart from his ludicrous poodle rock. Nobody from Teesside talks like that! Compare him with the great man Paul Rodgers, who has lived in Vancouver for many years, and still sounds as if he’s never been outside Middlesbrough in his life.
