I like chilled Sundays. Today was one of them and accompanying a leisurely approach to the day I have been listening to:
Steve Mason – Monkey minds in the Devils Yard.
Disc 3 of the Wilco Alpha Mike Foxtrot album
Disc 2 of The Jimi Hendrix Experience box
Martin Stephenson – Where the Pilgrims go (New release)
Grateful Dead at Cornell (8/5/77) for a nice ease into the day
Japandroids’ Near The Wild Heart Of Life rocked the kitchen while I was baking some brownies earlier
Afghan Whigs’ new one a few more times this afternoon. It’s a corker.
New Whigs! Thanks for the reminder!
I listened to it five times in a row last night. A proper old fashioned session, headphones on, no computer, reading the lyrics on the sleeve, only getting up to turn the record over.
Can´s Tago Mago, Peps´ Fyra Tunnlann Bedor Om Dan and the Nerdist pod with Jason Alexander.
A Peps fan on the AW? Welcome!
Thank you! How could anyone not be a fan of Peps once they’ve heard him?
Classic Album Sunday:
Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited
Stones – Sticky Fingers
Nirvana – Unplugged In New York
Clash – London Calling
The Ethiopians’ (previously unknown to me) late seventies album Slave Call suited the balmy sunshine rather well
(Obeah Book)
I have (by happy accident) watched the first recorded live gig by Steely Dan following their reformation as a touring outfit in ’93.
I am now relaxing with a glass of wine listening to a gig I saw live in the ’80’s and which was recorded for posterity as Foundations by the peerless Mr John Martyn.
The wonder of the ‘Media Age’. I am as young now as I was then.
The Unthanks – The Songs Of Molly Drake
Robin Trower – compilation (in the car)
Siouxsie & the Banshees – A Kiss In The Dreamhouse
Blondie – Pollinator
Sorry that’s all so far today – had to umpire a cricket match and watch The (once mighty) Arsenal.
Looking forward to the latest 41 Rooms podcast later.
Mark Lanegan’s gargoyle
Test Match Special
Got to hear Aggers describe how he’d “had a hand job” during the winter break. Nice!
Randomising, mostly.
Tracks by Bill Evans, Paul Simon, The Kinks, Buddy & Julie Miller, Art Blakey, Ivor Cutler, Aretha Franklin, The Orb, Albert King, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and from Cesaria Evora.
Also listened to Alan Stivell’s “Renaissance Of the Celtic Harp” in full and a couple of old Resonance FM arty music podcasts.
Currently playing disc 3 of Wings Over America, which I got in perfect nick (all of it, not just disc 3!) a couple of weeks ago for a pound, complete with poster.
Earlier on played today’s car boot singles, which include PSBs, Bob, Kate, Deep Purple, Monsoon, Ennio Morricone, Clash, Pistols and Blockheads. Best of all is 12″ Patrick Cowley mix of Sylvester’s Do Ya Wanna Funk, which is immense.
And now, on CD, Space Age Pop Vol. 3. The ‘Stereo Action Dimension’ one. Great fun on headphones.
You’re a busy girl!
Just finished the new Surfer Blood, which gets even better with every play. Now onto Van’s Into The Music, which I got in a chazza yesterday for a quid. S’good.
@minibreakfast – Snowdonia is a real gem isn’t it?
Macca’s Flowers In The Dirt re-issue, followed by With The Beatles (my favourite fabs album to sing along to!)
Tull – Stand Up
Kate & Anna McGarrigle. First album. Some days I think I’ll never need to listen to anything else.
Earlier on it was Lloyd Cole at the Union Chapel, played in the car while bringing Ms Cakes back from yon varsity.
That first McGarrigles and Dancer with bruised knees are both exquisite. Talk to me of Mendocino and Heart like a wheel. Don’t get much better than that.
Vinyl selections –
John Coltrane – Ole Coltrane.
Burning Spear – Marcus Garvey and Garvey’s Ghost
Jimi Hendrix Experience – Axis Bold As Love
The new Raekwon album, which I like quite a lot. I don’t really know how great it is or isn’t, it’s just great to hear his voice.
And Semper Femina by Laura Marling, which is excellent. Continuing the Short Movie return to form – maybe better, even.
Stone Foundation -A Life Unlimited
Birmingham City F.C. – clinging on to the Championship
@Mohair-Sam Those 6 minutes of extra time were nerve shredding. Don’t want to go through that again next year.
Yes my heart sank when they said SIX minutes of OT. Glad he blew the whistle after 5. Hope Arry stays on now .
UFO – The Best Of: Just needed to blow the cobwebs out of my ears this morning.
Friend of mine has (finally) released her first album – it’s only taken 14 years of convincing, writing, re-convincing, recording, more convincing, re-recording, mastering and releasing.
Minor key folk with minimal instrumentation and a sombre (but not morbid) undertone.
It’s pretty damn good.
Most of the day involved shifting 2 tonne of gravel from the front of the house to the back garden. No musical accompaniment, apart from various Levellers tracks in my head (for some reason?)
Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash and The Grand Wazoo.
After Michael Kiwanuka at the RAH, it’s back to the frenzy of Love and Hate on repeat as at the time of release. It is an astonishing LP.
Drive up to the Lakes in the car – early morning Radio 3
Drive back after a great walk above Ullswater – the new ones from Rhiannon Giddens, Hooray for the Riff Raff, and Laura Marling (agree with Bob’s assessment of it above)
Right now, bathed and preparing dinner – Pithecanthropus Erectus by Charlie Mingus.
Chris Stapleton – From A Room Vol 1
Caleb Caudle – Paint Another Layer On My Heart
The Mastersons – Transient Lullaby
Israel Nash – Barn Doors and Concrete Floors
Tift Merritt – Stitch Of The World
Curtis Mayfield – Roots
War – All Day Music
The Chi-Lites – (For God’s Sake) Give More Power To The People
Etta James – Losers Weepers
Gene McDaniels – Headless Heroes Of The Apocalypse
Baby Huey – The Living Legend
Is that only six albums?
Are you alright, Tiggs?
Yebbut six listens per album.
The day isn’t over. Add Soul Makossa and Funky Nassau.
Thanks to gunsofbrixton I’ve been listening to Thundercat’s album Drunk.
It’s kind of like a hip hop Frank Zappa. I’m really enjoying it.
Ummmm…
I’ve been having an old vinyl cleaning and listening sesh….
The Hollies Greatest Hits
Jon Anderson – Olias of Sunhillow
Camel – Moonmadness
Steve Winwood – first solo album
Crosby and Nash Live
Tom Petty – Free falling and Won’t back down
Johnny and Edgar Winter – Together
And…
Two eps of The Archers
The Briefing Room podcast
Also took in a record shop gig of someone called Hattie Briggs who was very good but my God she was gloomy. Song after song about her sad life. No easy grooving with drole lyrics here.
A fado compilation over breakfast
Can – Soon over Babaluma
Pink Floyd – Relics and Meddle
Lowell George – Thanks!! I’ll eat it here!!
Sir Michael Tippet – Blue Guitar
Songs in the Key of Life. Genius Of love-Tom Tom Club, Beautiful Extremes-Kevin Coyne, Peel Sessions-The Slits, Mental Illness-Aimee Mann, English Weather-Various,Solo Studio- Laura Nyro

apart from the wife moaning because I refused to mash the spuds.
in my defence, I had taken the grandfishes out bike riding and was frikkin knackered……was gunna put jonnie walker on but she already had diamond are forever on the shit pump.
domestic blissness.
This morning – some of Feeling Good – Funk Soul and Deep Jazz Gems The Supreme Sound of Producer Bob Chad, then some of Cerys Matthews 6 Music show. This afternoon started with a Brazilian comp Rio Carnival followed by soundtrack to The Wolf Of Wall Street then Flying Jazz Grooves a Bluebird and Flying Dutchman comp.
😉
Glorious tune. Great album too.
Agreed!
I’ve been enjoying a Jackson Browne blitz over the last week, culminating today in the excellent Solo Acoustic Vols 1 & 2. For finely crafted literate songs of heartbreak and personal insight the man is hard to beat. For me, the song The Pretender, and the album of the same name were the 1970s, and he’s an artist I come back to time and again, and never grow tired of.
Beautifully put and I couldn’t agree more. I imagine you have the early radio show with David Lindley – wonderful stuff.
Agreed, @bungliemutt and @twang . . . and hopefully you are also aware of the 2006 “Some Bridges” album by Fred Martin and the Levite Camp featuring JB songs and vocals. It’s available to listen to on Spotify.

Oh I’ll check it out
Likewise, thanks.
Mostly purchased from today’s car boot plunder:
Van Morrison – Sense of Wonder CD – quite dull so I’ll sell that on
Corky Laing &Friends – Music from Last Call – CD – really rather good so a keeper
Stealers Wheel – Ferguslie Park – vinly – also a keeper
Others acquired today but not yet played include Kokomo, a couple of Jess Rodens and Rachel Sweet. All in all not a bad day
Which Jess Roden’s did you bag?
Just the one. My 67 vintage copy of Absolutely Free, the second Mothers of Invention album.
I am now talking to a cauliflower. No response yet
An old Danny Baker show BBC London 2009
Homemade Lucinda Williams Duets compilation
Wrangled-Angaleena Presley
It’s a Shame About Gemma Ray-Gemma Ray
Not a great deal – I listened to that Kamasi Washington track Mr H posted elsewhere, some stuff off of The Unthanks superb “Mount The Air” and about half of Ana Matronic’s disco show from Radio 2 currently on the i-Player, plus the Bill Maher Real Time podcast.
Don’t generally get to listen to much at the weekend when everybody is at home, but managed to listen to The Seeds by, er, The Seeds this morning before we went out and then half of There’s A Riot Goin’ On by Sly & The Family Stone before child number 1 came down and decided we were watching yesterday’s Dr. Who.
Actually, she had control of the music in the car on the way to swimming and back, so we had to endure a ghastly Ed Sheeran album and some tracks from the latest Now That’s What I Call Music album. I was listening to Blondie and The Jam and Madness when I was her age. What went wrong?
The new album from John Moreland – Big Bad Luv –
Oh, I’m looking forward to getting my copy…is it as good as “High on Tulsa Heat” ?
Work day here in the middle east so I listened to the excellent Sound Opinions pod cast which was about the 50th Anniversary of the first Velvet Underground album.
Clive, where are you? I’m in Dubai
JBR. You?
Now yesterday but it was new albums from Blondie, Moon Duo and Hoops for me. Plus the nearly new Mark Lanegan. Oh, and the Marseillaise!
actually should have added this too which was repeated on BBC4 last night (not seen it before);
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00kntl1
Just picked up on this but yesterday (and Saturday) were Spring cleaning days so lots of music was had.
Mostly shuffle but whole uninterrupted albums were
Alice Coltrane-The Ecstatic Music of Turiyasangitananda review (absolutely wonderful)
Syrinx-Tumblers From the Vault
The Moomins Soundtrack-Graeme Miller & Steve Shill
Leviathan-The Legendary Lost Elektra Album
Moon Duo-Occult Architecture Volume 2
Penguin Cafe-The Imperfect Sea
All worth a listen and perhaps a punt.
Got that Penguin Café on order. Looking forward to it.
Yes, I too have the Penguin Café album on order.
Decided to go for the vinyl version.
Mine will probably have a massive warp on it, and I’ll have to send it back to the UK.
Manufacturing a flat slab of vinyl is clearly still really, really difficult.
it’s a work day, and had a long drive, so that was “Today”, the discussion programme after the 9am news, then a Mary Coughlan live album. On the way back, A “Tony William’s Lifetime” bootleg with Alan Holdsworth, and more news. I’m a wild and crazy guy.
The Kinks, then The Who, then The Kinks, followed by The Who etc. A result of them both having compilations called ‘The Ultimate Collection’ and the iPod assuming it was the same CD. It wasn’t too much of a problem, at least there was a thematic link.
The Moomins Soundtrack? Now you have got me interested.
@Kaisfatdad It’s a lovely and spooky synthtastic treat.
Went hunting for vinyl during lunch hour today and found ABBA’s The Visitors second hand. Have been listening to it all evening. A shame we didn’t get more from eighties ABBA. Pretty good. Pretty, pretty good.
