Tonight after the kids are in bed I’m going to walk the dog and listen to Morrissey’s new album on my ipod shuffle. I may have to skip tracks, I may not, we’ll see.
Then when I get home, prompted by an article I read about Chuck D’s new book, I’m going to sit down and listen to Fear of a Black Planet. I bought the LP second hand 25 years ago and I don’t think I’ve ever listened to the whole thing. I’m going to use the magnifying glass on my phone to read the lyrics on the inner sleeve.
That’s the plan anyway. and yourself?

Wait – you can get a magnifying glass app?
THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING
Oddly enough, I bagged a copy of the 2CD deluxe edition of Fear of a Black Planet last week for a fiver. Cut to scene of late-40s white man in a Volkswagen estate car, rapping along with 911 Is A Joke. I don’t think I’d played it for 26 years.
The 12-year-old passenger piped up “Don’t play this when Mum’s around, it’s too sweary”.
Had to post this…

And this..

After I’ve ‘ad me Mac & Cheese dinner, I’m going to listen to a bootleg of a 1976 French radio concert by The Gil Evans Orchestra. Then I may catch up on the last of my Lee Morgan 6-CD set and start re-reading Christopher Brookmyre’s “Boiling A Frog”.
I will also be reading Brookmyre tonight – got “Places In The Darkness” from the library this very lunchtime. The Phoebe Bridgers LP will probably go on once the younger generation have been packed off to bed, which seems to be getting later and later these days, which is why it’s taken me three weeks to watch this copy of Uzumasa Limelight.
Have managed to acquire tickets at the local comedy joint which has an evening for Sean Hughes’ Charities…
Stellar guest list including Miles Jupp, Arthur Smith , Carl Donnelly , Owen O’Neill ,Geoff Boyz ,
Henning Wehn , Chris McCausland ,Charmian Hughes , Stewart Lee ,Nick Helm, Nick Revell, Adam Bloom ,Dave Cohen and Huw Thomas as Compere.
I know that Mr H divided opinion, but on his day, was as good a night out as any stand up I’ve seen …
His GLR show, with its regular injections of Tindersticks, Plush and C86 merchants, was always a great listen, but seeing him over the last couple of years in and around Crouch End, it was clear that he wasn’t in the best of health.
We’re looking forward to a great night, which will give him a proper send off.
Must be the King’s Head. The first comedy club I trekked to when I moved to London in 87. Mark Miwurdz later Mark Hurst was the headliner and Huw Thomas was compering then. I loved that club. I saw Sean Hughes there soon after and many more times including an early take on his Perrier winning show. Many happy nights there including an unbilled Emo Philips show. Enjoy it! Wish I could be there. Does Huw still do his classic motorbike café routine?
Was indeed.
Huw compering ..no motorbike as lots of acts to squash in, but did the 3 recorders routine..
Two in hiw mouth and one which disappeared inside his cloting and which he asked us to remind him to clean thoroughly..also a community singing version of ” I’ve got a luverly bunch of Coconuts.”
Lots of old and new faces, plenty of poetry, and fairtly unsentimental recollections of Mr H.
My personal highlight was a snatched conversation with Stewart Lee,whom I’d seen at the Medicine Syndicate Show a couple of weeks back. He reminded me that Sean had used Med Sy as intro music and that they’d spent many happy hours driving to Comedy shows listening to the band on cassette.
All of this was 30 bloody years ago….How can this possibly be ?
You’ve caught me just before I change into sweats and a t shirt for the weekly boxercise class (not actually boxing, just pads and gloves – the point of that being to get the upper body involved in the workout). This class means that Monday night is necessarily laundry night, to get the sweaty gear cleaned ASAP. As it dances in the suds I’ll have a soak in the bath then put my feet up with something soothing on. Probably John Harle’s terror and Magnificence which I picked up in a chazza at the weekend. Both bath and sofa will involve reading Andrew Cartmel’s Written in Dead Wax which I’ve been enjoying since seeing it recommended in these pages recently.
Well……I’m going to make a start on the Sailors’ Tales box….I may be some time…..
i am going to listen to the Tokio Myers LP for a 2nd time. Yup, the winner of Britains Got Talent, on the Syco label (Simon Cowell). At first listen not half bad, lots of Mobyesque moments. That should baffle all the music snobs here, of which I am proud to be one of the biggest.
I’ve just bought Traditional Songs of West Africa by Vieux Diop on download after listening to it on Spotify. Beautiful, ’tis.
‘Ad me dinner and then washed up.
My soundtrack was another crack at the Liam Gallagher opus.
There remains a Robbie Williams vibe in places.
And it ain’t Noel wit the Beatles fixation – certainly not on the evidence of some of the lyrics and tunes here.
Still pretty good though
Just had tea. Going to listen to the Steven Stills & Judy Collins album on my Pono while reading the new Brandon Sanderson.
I will probably listen to an episode of Living With The Gods, the rather wonderful new series from Neil MacGregor on Radio 4.
“Jules et Jim” was showing tonight at our local cinema.
£7.50, full house, a truly staggering piece of work.
Oscar Werner, eh? What an actor.
Superb film, and one that benefits from being seen on the big screen and in a crowd. You lucky swine.
nice tips in here thanks
I’m relistening to the Val Lewton themed Secret History of Hollywood podcasts
https://www.attaboyclarence.com/the-secret-history-of-hollywood/
Fantastic for long journeys too.
Well, my guess is that you were enjoying the first album till it all started to go horribly wrong, but then the second album more than made up for it.
yes, the first album actually put me off listening to anything so we watched the latest Curb your enthusiasm and a detectorists,
rock n roll, phew!
I had an iTunes crash last week which means I’ve had to start rebuilding the whole library. It’s been great – reminds you of stuff you added years ago and have barely listened to since. This morning it was The Raveonettes’ second album which has held up surprisingly well. On the way home I’ll be listening to Lyn Collins.
