Returning from my morning stroll just now as I was walking down the hill I saw coming towards me a woman I vaguely know walking her dog. I had my mask on as I had just walked past a group of ramblers. We had all smiled an nodded. People are friendly and polite here, normally. Masks in shops and social distancing is not an issue amongst the locals. Anyway as the woman passes, a conversation ensues.
Woman: You do realise that you have only a 1% of catching the virus, don’t you?
Me: I beg your pardon? (A car had just gone by, and I wasn’t sure if I’d heard her correctly).
Woman: I said you’ve only got a 1% of catching the virus. (She stares, haughtily. Bad vibe emissions).
Me: Well, I’m caring for someone who’s extremely vulnerable, so I’m not taking any chances, regardless.
Woman: Well they should be in the garden then. Sunlight kills it.
Me: Well, that would be a bit difficult because they suffer from rosacea and hay fever, and besides, we’re all entitled to our own opinions, and you should keep yours to yourself!’
At this point she’s further up the hill. Mumbled something inaudible. Funny, the said woman always used to smile and say hello. She has a stringy boyfriend, and a stringy dog. She’s quite stringy herself. All grey roots and dyed black stringy hair. She offered me a lift in her car once. I politely declined. She’s been less friendly these past few weeks, funnily enough. Obviously a neo libertarian covid nutjob with a bee up her arse.
Have any of you been outraged, had your honour imputed, or your serenity harassed recently?
