It was announced yesterday that there is a new album on the way from The Monkees. 2016’s Good Times was a fantastic listen and they’ve gotten the band together one more time for a, wait for it, Christmas Album!
The Monkees Christmas Party has new and old contributions from all the people who generally live inside my pop brain. Produced by Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne) and with new songs via Any Partidge, Rivers Cuomo and Peter Buck, plus they’re going to do *those* songs made famous by Roy Wood and Paul McCartney. Peter Buck also plays on a cover of Big Star’s Jesus Christ. Who doesn’t want to hear that??!? It worth saying again: Peter Buck plays guitar on a Big Star cover on the new Monkees album. What a time to be alive.

Replace “Adam Schlesinger” with “Jeff Lynne” and it’s a fair chance your head might have exploded.
This is quite true.
I’ve long thought that Jeff’n’ELO are missing a bone fide Christmas standard from their repertoire. It’s not too late.
But we already know that Adam Schlesinger is capable of helping construct a christmas classic – more than one in fact!
I’ll grab anything that I can find that he’s involved with until the next FoW album which seems like it’s not scheduled until hell freezes over!
I’m partial to this AdamS Christmas tune.
Jesus Aitch Christ!!!
….is born today
There’s been a loud bang on the banks of the Mekong. Least we won’t have to put up with any more of his insults
Now I’m looking forward to Christmas. Good Times was brilliant, even Davy’s rehashed song. Micky’s vocals are still there and it’s more Monkees so what’s no to love?
Good Times really was/is a great record. Coming after Pool It! and Just Us, two terrible records, it’s remarkable.
Oh god, that’s so gorgeous.
I know a fair few Magdalenas in my job and I feel like playing this to them .
This is quite serendipitous. I ‘discovered’ this song for the first time just one week ago. It came up on Spotify when the algorithm was finding songs I might like and I’ve been obsessed by it since. When I saw that it was performed by the Monkees, well, you could have knocked me down with Michael Nesmith’s wooly hat.
As you say, it’s gorgeous.
It was written by Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie (terrible name) and there is a lovely live version of him singing it on you tube. In fact, here it is
Indeed a terrible name but it shows his dad had an eclectic record collection:
Pretty terrible song, too, pastiche or otherwise.
Still no excuse
How has a Monkees Christmas album never happened before?
I feel like a UN Special Commission should be convened on this issue.
Well they did give us this back in the day (and apparently it will be a bonus track on some versions of the CD)
I can see that might possibly have influenced Steeleye Span’s rendition of Gaudete…
I was suckered into buying the last one. And a few before that, come to think. However, something tells me The Monkees were created to make a Christmas Album.
No Davy Jones? Travesty.
Ah but there is.
