Forget that line-up of multi millionaires who have just realised that they haven’t got all the money in the world yet and this silly talk of not listening to any new music for five years and have a look at some of the new albums that came out this week. After a whole two days of listening I think they are all pretty wonderful, and I’m finding it hard to say which is my favorite at the moment. So have a listen to the new Sufjan Stevens (very low key but heartbreaking and lovely), Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Speaker shaking compelling slabs of noise), Ryley Walker (fantastic new psych-folk which harks beautifully back to the 70s), The Soft Moon (Dark and doom laden), and a new edition of Jane Weaver’s The Silver Globe with a whole new album (The Amber Light) which is as good as The Silver Globe.

Tru dat. The Jane Weaver is as excellent as it was unexpected. I’ve not heard the latest Godspeed yet but I’m looking forward to doing so.
Heads up on another few absolutely corking recent releasea in the form of JD McPherson’s Let The Good Times Roll, David Corley’s Available Light and Bill Fay’s Who Is The Sender. 2015 is looking good so far.
I thought the GYBE was a little underwhelming compare to Mladic et Al. Still a nice surprise when it appeared as a Spotify notification
It is indeed a fine week for new albums. And there’s one more release that I’d like to bring to your attention, Afterworders. It’s the new album “Slow Eastbound Train” by the brilliant young Norwegian tuba player Daniel Herskedal. If you like new Nordic jazz/chamber jazz/the ECM sound, then I reckon you’ll really go for it. Herskedal’s tuba doesn’t just go oom-pah, oom-pah. Oh no. What a beautiful sound he has.

Yes indeed, my wish list overfloweth. As well as most of the above, there are also imminent releases by Calexico and Josh Rouse as well as the new Ron Sexsmith and Jose Gonzalez albums to consider.

I think it is an awesome album – the last track ‘Piss crowns Are Trebled’ is particularly epic

Be warned though. King Kunte isn’t typical of To Pimp A Butterfly. But, then, no track is. It is a sprawling, eclectic variety of styles, moods and emotions.

We also had “Apocalypse Pop” from Karin Park. “Highwire Poetry” has been a fixture on my phone (which normally has a high turnover of new stuff) for the last couple of years, so have been looking forward to this, and it hasn’t disappointed based on the first couple of plays. Dark electro-pop of Danish/Swedish origin? What’s not to like?

at the risk turning the OP into an albums of the year so far list, a couple of weeks ago we had the new one from Vessels. formerly slightly shoey post rockers who have taken a sharp turn for the electronic. It’s a stormer.

Oh that Sufjan Stevens LP is simply outstanding. To 2015 what Beck’s ‘Morning Phase’ was to 2014. If I hear a better album this year, I’ll be……well, very happy.
Totally agree Chris. people are saying it’s as good as Illinois, but for my money -John Wayne Gacy Jr aside- it’s much better. Has replaced Public Service Broadcasting as my constant spin.
Just wanted to added another massive thumbs up to the new Sufjan record. His best yet, for my dough.
The new Ron Sexsmith is very good indeed and quite upbeat compared to some of his past releases. Also looking forward to the Lilac Time cd which is on its way to me – Stephen Duffy is a highly underrated songwriter, just a shame he supports those idiots in Claret and Blue.
Then there are Calexico and Billy Fay albums later this month – bank manager having palpitations.
A new Bill Fay album in the pipeline? I didn’t know that. He’ll have to go some to match “Life is People”. I absolutely love that record.
The Ryley Walker album really is a cracker – very raw and exciting sound – for once the ‘ sounds like’ references are absolutely spot on in this case Tim Buckley and John Martyn.
Just like to give another shout out for the new Steven Wilson album Hand Cannot Erase which just grows in stature each time I play it – a really immersive listen.
