According to Zoom Earth (an internet), I live in the hottest country on earth at 1p.m. today. The “feels like” temperature – the one that matters – hit 46c. It’s even hotter in Bangkok, which must, coupled with the shitty air quality, be near intolerable.
Can’t afford to frost the house with A.C. all day, so we’re sitting in front of an air cooler – a big fan in a box that sucks air in through water-soaked baffles (a pump keeps them wet) and blows coolth out. Also – I put my swim shorts in the freezer, but that’s pretty short-term relief (though strangely invigorating). And I’m reading Alastair MacLean’s Ice Station Zebra and drinking lots of iced water.
It’s too damn hot – but I love it. I love the can’t do a damn thing thing. That’s my thing, and to have it confirmed by the weather is pretty damn wonderful.
I have to run so far to find a clear spot in the hot!
Sun’s all hottin’ and a rotten’ hot
Swamp’s all rotten ‘n stinkin’ uhh
Vegetation’s hot
Sleepin’ in a bayou on a old rotten cot
Can’t find my kind of folks havin’ fun!
I have to run, run, run, run
Run to find a clear spot uh!
Cane shadow down on the sun-baked ground
Mosquitos ‘n moccasins steppin’ all around
‘Fraid I’m gonna get hit!
Sun’s all a hottin’ and a rottin’ hot
Vegetation’s hot
Sleepin’ in a bayou on a old rotten cot
Can’t find my kind of folks havin’ fun
Gotta run, run, run, run
Run to find a clear spot!
I fair love too hot weather too. Especially if there’s a sea nearby. Can you dive into the Mekong for a daily dip or is too full of crocodiles eating piranhas?
See if you can guess what song this is without looking up the lyrics to Someone’s Looking At You by The Boomtown Rats:
When it’s so hot outside and the air is so sweet,
And when the pressure drop is heavy I don’t wanna hear you speak.
You know most killing is committed at 90 degrees.
When it’s too hot to breathe and it’s too hot to think.
According to Pop Will Eat Itself (we didn’t have Wikipedia back then), 92°F is the peak murder temperature.
Ed: insert Youtube link to 92°F by PWEI here. I can’t be bothered.
At your service:

@fentonsteve
I think Ray Bradbury beat them to it with his 1954 story “Touched By Fire”
That’s probably where PWEI heard it, I don’t think even the Poppies had access to Wikipedia in 1990, either.
There’s way too strong a current to consider a bracing dip, unfortunately, although there are places where you can go for an extreme sports paddle. Is that song Mungo Jerry’s In The Summertime?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8emBhUD4Znw
Jerry Mungo is a mysoginistic who thinks it’s ok to abuse women if their fathers are impovrished. I would never align myself with such sexyism.
He’s a pikey, and they nick your stuff.
Surely you mean a member of the traveling community who enriches our dreary, sedentary lives with sprigs of lucky heather
and clothes pegs?
Indeed, but only if you cross my palm with silver
Triffids ? West Australian band. They know all about heat over there.
God, it was too hot to sleep…
I’ve checked our weather for the next couple of weeks.
Still…waxing gibbous, so that’s something…
Yes I hope to see them in concert next week.
Virginia Astley says it’s too hot to sleep.
That Virginia Astley track is gorgeous, Cheshire. A very peaceful, rural heatwave.
By contrast, here’s Ella, wonderful as ever, with a sassy, sophisticated, urban heatwave.
Cole Porter wrote it in 1948 for the musical Kiss Me Kate and slips in a reference to the Kinsey report, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, which was published that year.
Hope you are managing to keep cool, H.P. Here in Bagarmossen we have frost and a few handfuls pf snow.
About ten years ago hail fell here, for the first time in living memory. Out of a typically blue sky. People ran around scooping in up in their hands as it bounced off their heads, hooting with delight. No such luck today! Motorbiking around town – usually a reliable way of getting a little air – is like driving into the blast of a jet engine. So I’m pouring frosty ones down the inside of my neck – “My Beer” Brand. Cheap and ridiculously good.
Aw, shucks – the lovely Ella…I have that big box, it may be the only box set that I have where every disc is played regularly and often.
As you were – back to ambient temperature!
It’s El Nino’s fault apparently. Here’s MJ to explain.
