Although I was aware of him for most of my life, I couldn’t have named anything from his oeuvre. He seems to have ‘gone ape’ in the 50’s and was rubbing shoulders with the likes of Adam Faith and Cliff Richard. Apparently, Lennon & McCartney sought his autograph when he appeared in Liverpool. He liked a bow tie – and the bigger the better.
According to the Daily Mail, Dusty Springfield has been leading tributes to him…

Wee Willie Harris appeared in a 1960 Italian documentary, Il Mondo di Notte, which looked at nightlife all over the world.
His “Teddy Boy Tarzan” must have raised a few eyebrows in those glum, kitchen-sinky angry-young-many years of the early 60s.
According to this article both Ian Dury and David Bowie were genuine fans.

10-15 years ago he did a set at the carnival in our local park. No band with him, just a music track, and basically did a pub singer’s set. And when he was told his time was up he told the organisers to get stuffed and carried on singing. Can’t say that was one my most treasured musical memories.
