While could understand it if UW’s old – near the knuckle but far from
libellous – thread got taken down yesterday,, seems odd to take it down
over 24 hours later.
Leave aside the Sun’s canary yellow journalism, and you’re left with
huge questions about why Murdoch is being allowed to get away with
this shit.
Poor Huw Edwards seems to have had his career and health smashed
so the powers that be can throw another shovelful of dirt on the BBC
Uncle Wheaty says
It was taken down this afternoon not yesterday.
I agree with The Mods decision.
It was meant to provoke discussion whilst not being libellous which I believe it wasn’t. I made no accusations.
chiz says
You didn’t accuse but you did associate and I’m not sure there’s much difference if you’re the person involved
Uncle Wheaty says
I posted on his advice to trainee journalists as I have a family member who thought this might be useful advice to share.
Anything that followed was conjecture and nothing to do with the OP.
chiz says
I’m near Clapham right now as it happens. Maybe I should jump on an omnibus and see if the man there believes you
Uncle Wheaty says
Enjoy your trip.
Jaygee says
Given that many of us are fast approaching our seventh or eighth decade, wonder how how many AWers might be considering careers as trainee journalists…
Vulpes Vulpes says
I just came down with the last shower of rain.
Sitheref2409 says
“I made no accusations” didn’t exactly work as a defence for Sally Bercow
Jaygee says
@Sitheref2409
You forgot to add “Just sayin’”
MC Escher says
It’s very sad for all parties concerned. Thank God The Sun was there as the nation’s moral guardian.
Jaygee says
Not intended as a criticism of the mods and sorry if unit came across as such.
Think the cynical way Murdoch has destroyed Edwards, the reasons
why he did so and the ramifications of his doing so are too worrying
to let drop.
davebigpicture says
Murdoch has stated his desire to destroy the BBC.
Jaygee says
Yes, I know, but why isn’t anyone doing anything to stop him?
davebigpicture says
They’re frightened. When Blair and Brown floated the idea of New Labour after John Smith died, they were careful to have Murdoch on side. The sooner he croaks, the sooner politics can hopefully break free of the press stranglehold.
Mike_H says
You’re making an assumption that Murdoch’s croaking will be the end of this sort of thing.
Me? I’m not so sure about that.
Jaygee says
@Mike_H
Always thought of Murdoch as being a hired gun who’ll happily fire other even more unscrupulous people’s bullets in exchange for a seat at the top table
Mike_H says
He’s a lover of power and control. He enjoys manipulating what the consumers of his media think and do, while having their political leaders scrambling around at his bidding.
He hates and is deeply envious of the BBC. He’d love to have their influence.
The EU sees it desirable to limit the power of large media conglomerates so he actively seeks to destabilise it because he’s a monopolist.
He no longer has quite as much power and influence over the public, and hence the politicians, that he had in the ’80s and ’90s but he hopes to regain it. He sees diminishing the BBC’s power, and it’s eventual breakup as achievable goals that will do his empire a lot of good. These corporate goals will not be abandoned with his demise. His heirs will carry it all on.
Jaygee says
Thankfully, his heirs are, like Kendal, Shiv and Roman Roy “not serious people”
Mike_H says
Elizabeth and Lachlan are very much in their father’s mould.
James is the lone Liberal in the clan and unlikely to become Rupert’s successor. Lachlan is the strongest contender.
Black Type says
But who’s the Cousin Greg?
Uncle Wheaty says
I am no fan of Murdoch but surely Edwards destroyed himself here.
Jaygee says
Police say there was no evidence of criminality.
While his behaviour might be of interest to the
Public, it’s hardly in the public interest
Uncle Wheaty says
That aside, as a leading BBC News presenter he will always be tainted even if he keeps his job.
Jaygee says
Yes, but since there was no evidence of criminality there should have been no story, no taint and no hospitalisation
Uncle Wheaty says
I agree
Black Type says
Or, as Sky News gleefully keeps repeating, “the news anchor”.
Mike_H says
Yes, @Jaygee
There’s a definite difference between those two.
deramdaze says
The prime minister of this country during Covid will not relinquish his mobile phone so that an inquiry may work out what, if anything, went wrong during the initial response to it, and how a pandemic in the future, if one occurs, which it almost certainly will, might be handled better.
That is the story today.
This country is shit, I, personally, am not going to take the blame for it. There is no criminal behaviour in this BBC garbage, it is only there on that bastard Aussie’s behest – good looking, by the way, ain’t he, I’ve a feeling that’s what his whole life has REALLY been about – and people don’t really seem to care or understand.
Fine, the country is shit, but why should I suffer? I’ll see them all tomorrow, toddling to their Mails and Expresses and Suns, and the day after, and the day after …
I wish Edwards the best, and what a fantastic opportunity – money in the bank, months getting better and together – to really fly off the handle at a press conference. It would be wonderful if he did, I doubt he will… to inform the people what the news really is. Here’s hoping.
Boneshaker says
“….to inform the people what the news really is….”
Come on DD, you broke this ‘exclusive’ on us at the beginning of June…..
“This story is dominating the media because there is a much bigger story they should be covering but don’t because it doesn’t suit their bias.”
…..but you still haven’t told us what it is…..
deramdaze says
No exclusive, don’t know what you’re talking about… the story today is why is the prime minster during the pandemic is withholding information to an inquiry. That is what may have affected you or your loved ones in 2020, and may do so in the future.
Huw Edwards? Huw Schwedwards.
Jaygee says
I think it’s something about the melting point of the steel gliders in the WTC.
Either that or some shocking revelation about one of the Kennedys
deramdaze says
Ray Kennedy? What’s the revelation about Ray Kennedy?
Uncle Wheaty says
He didn’t like tea!
deramdaze says
More F.A. Cups than P.G. Tips?
Jaygee says
@deramdaze
Ray F K as the one-time Arsenal and Liverpool
stalwart is truther circles
fitterstoke says
“This country is shit, I, personally, am not going to take the blame for it.”
Are you, personally, being blamed for it, DD? That does seem unfair.
dai says
Edwards’ behaviour is a personal matter, if no crime committed and it doesn’t impact his job performance (seems not to have done so), then it is of no interest to anybody outside those who are directly affected
Uncle Wheaty says
Completely agree.
May impact the stories he can report on though.
hedgepig says
While I agree to an extent, a legalistic framing of morality seems pretty limited to me. Not all matters of right and wrong are covered by the law, and a pure consent framework – “only the people involved get to judge” – seems much too individualistic to really satisfy if we want society to operate as a society.
fitterstoke says
“it is of no interest to anybody outside those who are directly affected”
No legal interest – maybe, dai – but plenty of prurient interest, as The Sun (and, I guess, this thread) demonstrates. The Sun has based its business model on the prurient interest of the public for more decades than I care to count – it can always be relied upon.
Dave Ross says
My first thought as with Schofield is for his wife who’s had to deal with his alleged behaviour. Assuming he’s been paying for sex pics he’s been a mucky fool. He’s Huw Edwards, BBC stalwart, he got caught there are going to be consequences far beyond the shame and anger of his poor wife. Especially if The Scum get wind of it. He could also have drawn The Scums sting by fessing up, resigning to get his mental health issues sorted. You won’t find me agreeing with Jeremy Vine very often.
I can think Huw Edwards a mucky fool AND think The Scum isn’t fit for wiping my arse with. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.
A final thought. Imagine the reaction if it were Dan Wooton. He’s not the BBC Dave! I know but there would be no forgiveness.
Mike_H says
There’s always a mention at some point in these stories of “his poor wife”.
What if this has all been known to her for some time, the arguments have been had and settled and they’ve moved on.
Until the story broke, that is?
Jim Cain says
Mucky? Bit censorious. Consenting adults and all that.
Dave Ross says
Call me old fashioned but I don’t imagine his wife consented. Mucky.
Jim Cain says
None of our business.
deramdaze says
This isn’t about Schofield, Edwards, any of them… who gives a f****. Philip Schofield?!!!
It’s about Murdoch.
You get that, yeah? Many don’t. Please say you do.
Dave Ross says
Still no mention of his wife. Telling. Of course Murdoch and his Rag, I GET THAT. Sadly thought it does exist. Well paid public figures know it exists and exactly what it will do if it gets whiff of a scandal.
deramdaze says
Not telling. Not “telling” at all. I’m not talking about him, I’m talking about the country getting completely sidelined on stories deliberately meant to do that. See the bigger picture… and you clearly don’t “GET THAT”.
fitterstoke says
We’re lucky that you’re here to enlighten us, then…
Bargepole says
I was surprised the post wasn’t removed yesterday although I appreciate the Mod Team aren’t on duty 24/7. I was even more surprised that something that was no more than a rumour at the time was posted on here in the first place. The justification that it was only meant to ‘provoke discussion ‘ just doesn’t wash for me I’m afraid.
Whatever, The Sun has got what they wanted, namely lots of free publicity and the chance to bash the BBC, while the main stories of the day are relegated to also rans…..Ukraine NATO summit, Johnson’s Covid messages not passed to public enquiry, forthcoming hike in mortgage payments to pick out a few.
deramdaze says
Actually… it is something to cling on to, though it will probably be academic – see the “News of the World”/”Sun on Sunday” (spot the difference?) – but the Sun – don’t mention 17-year-olds with their tits out, I mentioned them once, or should that be twice? but I think I got away with it – are under more scrutiny now than the BBC.
H.P. Saucecraft says
Still, eh? That Selina Scott …
Junglejim says
I think Selina still has the vapours from the 1983 realisation that the Booker Prize judges actually had to read *all* the books on the short list!
Jaygee says
She’s a big Stephen King fan, our Selina
H.P. Saucecraft says
My love for her forgives everything.
chilli ray virus says
Im still reeling from the Frank Bough scandal
fitterstoke says
Bof…
Tiggerlion says
I think chilli spelt his name correctly the first time. 😀
fitterstoke says
Zut alors!
Jaygee says
@chilli-ray-virus
Imagine how poor Frank felt.
Mrs Frank must have been spitting feathers
when she discovered the mess he’d made.
Black Type says
Mrs Frank has the same name as Bob Marley’s middle one, fact fans. I’m sure some of you will construe this differently to the intention…
Black Celebration says
That’s a fact I know too because they had a gig on the BBC holiday programme trying out various destinations in the name of journalism.
From time to time we’d see Frank parade around with his top off. The amount of hair he had covering his torso was surprising and remarkable.
H.P. Saucecraft says
Must we fling this filth at our pop kids?
Jaygee says
@Black-Celebration
Hurrsute as our MIA mate Moose might have put it
fitterstoke says
Anyone heard from the Moose? It’s been a while…
