Howsaboutthatthen! The MG Alba Trads may not be something many of you vote in, but why not, this year, make an exception. Tucked away in the numerous awards is on for Community Project of the year. And one of the finalists is the kickstarter campaign for Dick Gaughan’ forthcoming box set, aka @colin-h ‘s. It might grant our boy a bottle of Isle of Barra whisky, too, as they sponsor that prize. And the publicity can’t harm the project.

In the other awards I’d vote for Malin Lewis Band for best live act.
Splendid – thanks Retro. I didn’t know the vote was open. I was contacted about the nomination out of the blue a couple of weeks ago. An honour indeed. And… I’m about two days away from pressing ‘go’ on the box set manufacturing.
I’m surprised that Dana is nominated in the ‘Up and Coming’ category. I thought she’d retired…
Arf! It’s a different Dana, Gaelic folk band. Probably with a à
Yes. 😀
Well, it’s a broad church – all kinds of everything, indeed…
They play both kinds of music: folk AND traditional… 🙂
Excellent suggestion, Retro. I have voted however i feel that my Swedish email adress may get me disqualified.
The nominations provide a usefu overview of the current Scottish trad music scene.
Done. Splendid!
Done!
Done.
Done!
You nipped in and voted before anyone noticed you were a jazzer and called security? 😀
I am a master of disguise!
Also done.
MG Alba bemused by the torrent of interest from old white men.(Little change from their usual demographic, then…….)
To be fair, folk audiences often carry an equivalent weight of aged crones.Who will insist on free form expression “dancing” in the aisles.
I’m told the event itself is a bit down on ‘that sort of thing’. Because it’s filmed for TV, they don’t want people moving away from their tables. Of course, if you want to go there and ‘stick it to the man’ by dancing in the aisles it would surely be in the grand tradition of dissent that Dick represents. 🙂
If the Isle of Barra’s not for dancing, what’s the use of drinking!
Voted too. Fabulous range of artists to rate – what a vibrant lot they are.
Filmed for Alba, the Gaelic channel. From what I hear, they may not like to suggest teuchters enjoy a dram or several, but their staff certainly do…..
You’re saying BBC Alba is totally in support of trad as long as it doesn’t involve any fun?
You’ve clearly not seen their Hogmanay show! They couldn’t cut from Peat & Diesel quick enough, to return to Eilidh and Angus’s Coseigh Ceilidh, live from Ardnamurchan Hydro.
Why am I reminded of the dour mother from Whisky Galore! who keeps her adult son locked in the house with bread and water…
I’m *nearly sure* there’s a track on the forthcoming box set called ‘The Dour Mother’…
Also done. Good luck Colin
Likewise!
Done! Cast votes for Blazin’ Fiddles, Talisk, Skerryvore and Siobhan Miller as well. If you’re going Colin hope you have a great and victorious night!
Thank you, Bluemeister – though I quickly decided I couldn’t afford to get from Belfast to Aberdeen! IF we win… the excellent Patsy Seddon will collect it.
A vote for Colin isn’t a vote wasted, I hope you win Colin it’s been a wonderful outcome to a superbly successful campaign
Thank you Pyro – very kind!
I voted for Colin. And a lot of other people I’ve never heard. Fingers crossed.
To be fair, Tigs, I’ve done a quick vox pop in the green room and they’ve not heard of you either. 😀
I am heading to Perth (Scotland) and points North tomorrow so will delay my vote for CH and whoever else until tomorrow when I will be chilling in my hotel room with a bottle of Irn Bru and a pack of Tunnocks teacakes. I will also be formulating a Dick Gaughan related question which I am sure CH will be able to answer. I see BBC Alba discussed above. Funnily enough, I have just finished watching one of the regular shows on the station – Transatlantic Sessions. Tonight’s show featured Iris Dement, Emmlou Harris, John Martyn, Mary Black, Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny as well as the usual houseband. The fun ended when the next programme started – Cold War Stories
Another vote for our Col.
Don’t think there’ll be much champagne left by the time
the celebratory bottle reaches me
Thank you all – and remember, it’s not just what you’re given, it’s what you do with what you’ve got! 🙏
Looking forward to all the acknowledgements in your acceptance speech…
‘And now we come to liars…’ 😀
Actually, joking aside, I’m always terrified of writing the Acknowledgements section in any book or archive music project – especially complex ones like the Gaughan. Someone is invariably – unwittingly – left out. I’ve run draft Acknowledgements past a private FB group of Gaughan box set supporters to get feedback and happily it reminded me of a couple of people, and then I recalled a few more myself…
I’ll be signing off on audio, film and artwork later today – off to manufacturing…
That’s been a useful prompt for me to look up the Jenn Butterworth release.
It’s in my AW EotY poll top 3, if that helps.
And she’s booked for Manchester Folk Festival, I am informed this evening.
Indeedy. That may just be her support slot with Fairport, mind, as their Spring tour encompasses the festival. I think Bella Hardy is playing a separate set during the festival, Jenn often her accompanist. If so, hopefully she will be allowed a song or two of her own, a thought that Jenn herself has had, as she sits there accompanying others!
My vote is in.
You’ll obviously win by a landslide!
Waist deep in a landslide and the damn fool said to push on…
An excuse to post this box set teaser – a fabulous amateur film by Doc Rowe from 2001, restored and mastered by the mighty Eroc for the box set. Dick singing Pete Seeger’s 1967 song about hubris…
He was robbed! Commiserations , @colin-h , losing out to the Royal National Mòd. Boo.
I didn’t even know Paul Weller was in the running…
