Now then folks, this is a heads up about a website you ought to be checking out. Tolhurst Vinyl Art take old vinyl records and cut them by hand to make pretty stunning pieces of, well, art. I’m a sucker for quirky pop art, so this was right up my street. There were loads that I wanted, so many that I couldn’t choose, but the decision was made easier, as Mrs Wad told me she didn’t want vinyl silhouettes of Prince, Mark E Smith, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan or Gary Numan adding to the other stuff on the walls she now tells me she doesn’t like, so I couldn’t have any of them!
Fortunately, they do commissions, so I managed to find two that the missus would agree to. Not only did they make them for me, and at the same price as their other pieces, they’ve even added them to their online catalogue, so if anybody else fancies a Stephen Duffy or Sophie Ellis-Bextor one, you have me to thank! Take a look though, cos some of them are just fantastic. I wish I liked Tom Petty enough to want him on the wall, as that one is probably the best, although the Jim Morrison one is stunning too. I was holding off on mentioning it on here until mine arrived, just in case, but they came this morning and look even better than they do in the photos, so I can highly recommend them. Some choice items there – although I’m not to sure about the cutting up of vinyl records.
However, the My Generation Vespa may well find a place on my wall.
As to will the Sex Pistols – God Save The Queen (look on the bright side, it’s the Virgin issue and not an A&M copy cut up)
One observation – Bob Seger and Eddie Vedder look like brothers
And Bruce Springsteen looks more like Baxter Dury (though others are more convincing likenesses).
Coincidentally I spoke to a guy crate digging in a charity shop at the weekend (and it wasn’t the bloke the picture), who does very similar stuff, which he sells at the market in St Albans. He was saying that his best pieces of work never sell and because it is all done by hand with saws and files, he can never make enough to get rich. A very interesting idea though.
Been looking at the site for a while now and still can’t decide if it’s a crime against humanity or the best thing ever.
I’m wondering, with physical record sales for singles being quite low, whether a run on any particular design could get the record in the charts?
I`m going to get one of those Paul, bet you can`t guess which. 🧠
I thought the Like a Rolling Stone one was the best, with the orange background to match the Columbia label. Couldn’t convince the wife though. I tried to find a decent front on picture of him, so that they could do a silhouette, rather than the side view, but it was made clear that Dylan wasn’t going up on the wall. I managed to get a couple of his prints up on the wall a couple of years ago, so I shouldn’t complain.
