Memo music Hall St Kilda
The people who run this resurrected returned servicemen’s hall in St Kilda also run Caravan music. They are old musos or music buffs who want to give exposure to great acts usually those with less of a mainstream following. You can be guaranteed excellent sound and a well-run event. But my, it was hot. At the tail end of summer there is a lot of residual heat.and the fans were kept to a minimum due to the quietness of the performance. I’m told a/c is being installed so looking forward to many more shows here.
I’ve done a review of VJ’s latest album including some background info if interested:
VJ is in his sixties. From a trumpet player who sings it is probably more the reverse these days and, for tonight at least, it was the flugelhorn in his hand. Vince played here the night before and the following day was scheduled to record at Bennett’s lane so he must think this outfit sounds alright.
His latest album is just him and a pianist, whereas he has his band drums ,bass and the wonderful pianist/ collaborator Matt McMahon tonight- and he also had a string section. As he said -“he’d forgotten how much the strings draw the colour out”. They only played on a few tracks but were highly effective.Ya see the whole thing about this is understatement, at least it appears like that these days. Nothing raucous just (often) fragile melodies executed to perfection.
Over the years he has been rated as Australia’s best male singer. These days the lower register is a bit raspy but the middle and upper are as sweet as ever. His longish anecdotes were never indulgent, just nice insights into his life and values…living round the corner in St Kilda in the eighties, his family, his mother and the dedication of mothers, the environment, power and corruption. Heading towards the twilight of his career there was a lot of melancholy on display and, it seemed, a genuine appreciation of playing a smallish venue with lovely sound and an audience who respects him.
He opens the liner notes of his latest album Provenance with the line “A person who doesn’t create is like a cloud that doesn’t rain”. This night, Vince reigned.
Old of course.
It made me think..
You don’t have to wig out to impress.
