After our little flurry of activity we have to repopulate the taping schedule so would like to see if there is any interest in participation in anything
Bootlegs – taping em, buying em, downloading em, the rights and wrongs, the best examples and worst you ever bought etc . I know @fortuneeight was keen on this
“No, I bloody haven’t listened to….” might be just me but does anyone else have an album they refuse to listen to because people won’t shut up about it or regard it as classic . For purely childish rather than taste reasons you are a refusenik. Appetite For Destruction perhaps?
If you want we’ll force you to do so and give your verdict.
I know Twang wants to do a Jazz cast so help him out.
I’d still like to do a Hancock one (No not the Will Smith film)
One on the Kate Bush Before The Dawn shows to tie in with the live album release
I could easily do an Eels cast or one on Soul, the Shangri-las, new stuff, old stuff, Christmas music, one hit wonders, great musical arrangers and producers, film, books TV, theatre, Ace Records and more mental health.
Any suggestions or volunteers that think they could jaw about something with a couple of like minded pals then we can offer taping n editing services
I’m sure Twang will have some his own ideas but just want to keep the momentum up and new people involved as much as possible. Much thanks to all who took part recently
And of course the next Beatles cast is already taking shape so they can safely be avoided in one easy chapter.
We’re coming up upon 50 pods soon and got a mention in The Times which means Uncle Bulgaria knows about us
Uncle Wheaty says
I saw the Kate Bush show and would be happy to contribute to that.
Black Type says
Me too, but I’m from Oop North and a podcast virgin, so have no idea about the logistics of it all. We do have electricity up here though, which is a start…
Rigid Digit says
Did you once mention a pod for Comedy and/or Novelty Records?
Arguably these are the same thing, but also very different beasts – the conversation could range from the Gold Standard Comedy Records (Monty Python being a prime example), the Lesser, But No Less Worthy (Jasper Carrot, Mike Harding), to the downright awfulness of Hale & Pace’s “The Stonk”.
Are all Novelty records rubbish? Latterly, probably yes (and mostly unfunny cash-ins).
But for every Joe Dolce, St Winifreds School Choir and Clare and Friends, there is a Bernard Cribbins (Right Said Fred), Benny Hill (Ernie) and The Firm (Star Trekkin).
Uncle Wheaty says
You have nailed that podcast in one go with that post.
A 10 minute one might be too short methinks.
Rigid Digit says
Could expand it to 15 minutes.
I was just about to start a paragraph regarding Spitting Image. Suggesting that the B-Side (I’ve Never Met A Nice South African) was a better song than The Chicken Song (but you can understand why it was on the B-Side) and how the album was probably the last in a line of comedy/novelty/satirical albums to make an impression on the charts.
And then there’s Derek and Clive …
(I’ll shut up now)
Uncle Wheaty says
Derek and Clive would add 30 minutes and we could also sing the Star Trekking one to add another 30 seconds.
I will get my train track out in preparation and have the excuse ready for the missus!
Uncle Wheaty says
Derek and Clive on video.
Not seen this before, enjoy…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17-IDPQEqaw
Rigid Digit says
That video is both hilarious and difficult to watch. It was the last real outing for Derek and Clive, and Cook and Moore’s relationship had descended to a level of tolerance (at best) – Dudley was off the Hoolywood, and Peter Cook was biding his time drinking a lot until he was declared “legendary” about 15 or 20 years later.
There is a feeling that some of Peter Cook’s character statements towards Dudley Moore are actually his own feelings, and than at other times (most of the time if I’m honest) there is genuine “magic” between the two of them.
Uncle Wheaty says
Just finished watching it and completely agree with your analysis.
retropath2 says
“No, I haven’t listened to” sounds a wonderful idea, as divas like me just won’t listen to the tide as it is a’flowing. I refused all Radiohead, without listen, except the Streetspirit (Fadeout) remix, damn good IMHO, on the Warchild charity album, because I thought them bedwetters. Even the standout track on Pj Harvey’s Songs from the etc etc, with Thom Yorke, which I loved, couldn’t make me waver. And then I bought their new one, loving it huge. Hell, I played it tonight, whilst cooking tea, so the Squeeze could share my passion. (OK, I also acquired the Bends, and was underwhelmed, discovered I already owned OK Computer (who knew? Not me?) and have Kid A on order, but this not the point). As an addict swayed by prejudices real and imagined, I am sure this is a fertile bed of investigative bloggery.
Bartleby says
Appetite for Destruction refuseniks form a line behind me. And every other album. Nothing but nothing will persuade me they’re not and haven’t always been a bunch of posing, derivative, unoriginal berks.
I’d love to hear a “My brush with fame” podcast. Or “My brush with the famous”. Pretty sure there are some cracking stories among the Massive.
Moose the Mooche says
*stands in line behind Bartleby*
GnR are/were shite, a colossal confidence trick. An assemblage of tatty rock’n’roll cliches beautifully packaged by Geffen. Sigue Sigue Sputnik without the saving grace of a sense of humour or their own preposterousness.
Or as “Oral Sex”* might say it, “Nyeeeeerrrrrgghhh, urrrrggggggghhhhhh!!”
(*my aching sides!!!)
DogFacedBoy says
Nope you are totally missing the point of the exercise. This isn’t about forcing people to listen to something they don’t like, it’s about listening to something they know they probably would like but the weight of public opinion or classic status.
Twang says
Agree to all Dave’s ideas. We are happily quite different in areas of interest and in ability to work together to get a real variety of shows out. I fancied a jazzcast but can’t find enough participants so it’s on the back burner for now. We have a couple of classy players – need a few more to make up the panel. Anyone?
Tiggerlion says
Oh. I thought we had four! Time to squeeze someone’s arm, maybe? (I’m thinking of someone in the frozen North.)
I’d be up for a Beatles cast but there is no way on earth I’m listening to AFD.
Twang says
So did I but it turned out not to be the case.
Moose the Mooche says
I’m in Hull and am glad to be squeezed.
DogFacedBoy says
The next Beatlescast is on almost reunions and “what if” theories
Tim says
I’d be up for a future Beatlecast – I’m no good at WhatIfs but happy to join in a future one- A suggestion would be lets talk about who are the 5th/6th Beatles – George Martin, Brian Epstein, Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall, Derek Taylor, Stu Sutcliffe, Pete Best, Billy Preston, Billy Shears etc.
ganglesprocket says
The forcing people to listen to stuff idea is one I’d happily take part in. There are loads of classic albums I’ve never listened to. Never listened to Bruce Springsteen because I thought Born In The USA (the album) was shite and his concerts go on forever so I’ve always dodged him. Never heard any Steely Dan because I guy I hated loved them. Never heard any Elton John album because Princess Diana liked him. The only Michael Jackson album I’ve ever played is Off The Wall. I’m sure there are more, but if the idea is “mindless prejudice” then I have loads of that… God, Bat Out Of Hell is another…
Hannah says
Same here. I’ve convinced myself I don’t like Neil Young and have never listened to any of his albums. I’ve bought three copies of Astral Weeks over the years and not so much as cracked the cellophane on any of them. And, technically, I did once listen to The Dark Side of the Moon, but that was in 1997, I was at my mate’s house and he insisted he play it and that I listen in reverent silence. I was so pissed off at this that I spent the entire duration of the album basically going “LALALALA” in my head and forcibly tuning it out (I know, I know). So I really have no idea how it actually sounds.
fentonsteve says
Likewise. My reference point, like @Rigid Digit, is post-punk (we’re the same age and home counties boys). Any of those 70s West Coast classic albums sounded like the Carpenters to me at the time. Now I’m older I’m sure I could appreciate them, but I’ve never bothered.
fentonsteve says
I’ve just realised, even more amazing since I have spent most of my time working in the hi-fi industry, that I have never listened to Dark Side of The Moon.
fortuneight says
Still up for a bootleg podcast. Or a blues podcast. Or how about a podcast podcast?
Moose the Mooche says
Can the bootleg podcast be really badly recorded, and then issued under five or six completely misleading titles? Cheers.
Vulpes Vulpes says
On green vinyl.
davebigpicture says
Or on cassette, with photocopied inserts, sold from a pasting table at Camden Market.
Junglejim says
I think the idea of a podcasts podcast is a genuine stroke of genius.
The subject matter is almost infinite and there is greats list potential, always a hit with the Massive.
I’m well up for one of those.
Vulpes Vulpes says
Always happy to blather on about music with like minded souls. Call me up when you think you have a subject and I’ll do my best to join in.
Jazz eh? Crikey, how long have we got? That’s like proposing we do a Podcast about water!! We can make a start, but nine seconds after we switch the mike off, we’ll all realise we’ve barely scratched the surface and wish we’d said a dozen other things.
Mike_H says
Yes. If a Jazzcast was to be done, the parameters would need to be narrowed.
I’m currently embarked on some vocal jazz exploration. Previously it was a bit of a blind spot, apart from Ella, Sarah Vaughan etc. There are some great voices out there, as that recent thread demonstrated.
I’m not a Skyper at present. but maybe I should get on it and then maybe have a go.
Twang says
You would both be very welcome. Fear not, I have plans for focussing the discussion. Just don’t have a panel!
Skype couldn’t be easier Mike. PM me if you need advice.
