Up for a new list? The first issue of Kerrang from 1981 published the best 100 Heavy Metal songs ever. I have a copy somewhere in the loft!
AC/DC
One or many of:
Whole Lotta Rosie
Highway To Hell
Let There Be Rock
It’s a Long Way To The Shops If You Want A Sausage Roll
Back In Black
Hells Bells
In the very early 80s”Heavy Metal” still broadly included anything that was riff-laden and had loud guitars, rather than what we now think of as specifically HM. The NWOBHM was in its infancy. Hence, a lot big selling, popular hits could be lumped under the banner. Soooo, on that basis, I’ll guess:
Rush – “The Spirit of Radio”
Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Free Bird”
Thin Lizzy – “The Boys Are Back In Town”
Blue Oyster Cult – “Don’t Fear The Reaper”
Free- “Alright Now”
I have found the list! So here goes with the 30 found so far…

Great song, that. I was a big Rainbow fan as a kid, at least for three albums (Rising, LLR&R and On Stage). I was very disappointed when they went all TOTP. Heaven & Hell seemed like a more valid continuation. Still does, The line “The less that you give, you’re a taker” is a bit shite though. Any more Rainbow on the list? Catch the Rainbow is magnificent, but I prefer the live version. I bet some of the TOTP era is on there.
I wonder if Ram Jam’s Black Betty or Golden Earring’s Radar Love are on the list? They’re kinda popular heavy-ish rock sort of thing, I think.
Reckon there will be some Nazareth in there (This Flight Tonight?)
Did a pop pub quiz with a mate of mine in a pub called the Crown in Oxford 25 or so years ago, and the guy who set it (sent to the pub on a tape!) must’ve been a Nazareth fan cos they came up quite frequently (like Dollar or Mud on Popmaster). Still don’t know much of their stuff mind you.

Last week I saw a fairly young woman in the street wearing a denim jacket with cut-off sleeves, festooned with RAWWWK patches. Such a garment was ubiquitous in my 80s childhood and now it’s a sort of Statement.

Funny that Kerrang started with a huge list. As if they’d decided to short-cut through the next 25 years of music magazines and just go straight to the end.
Emergency and the Please Don’t Touch thing with Motörhead?
If not, then it’s hard to think of any second rankers who’ve not otherwise been mentioned. I wouldn’t have thought than anyone in 1981 would have thought the likes of Samson or Vardis were worth a vote?

I haven’t listened to that in years…off to Spotify right now.
It is riffttastic to start with though so that probably gets it in.
Never seemed to appear on any of their many live albums though…perhaps a piece that they just couldn’t be arsed to finish after 2112 and left as an instrumental and then ignored.
On reflection, it might be a function of the voters being Sounds readers, as you mentioned above. Before it embraced ‘OI!’ and became the anti-NME, Sounds covered quite a bit at the noisier end of Prog…
I don’t remember Rush really being considered terribly prog at the time, just clever dick rockers with long songs and a penchant for concept albums. So far as metal fans were concerned, Rush was a metal band. That said, I think the whole notion of what was metal was pretty fluid anyway.
I think the thing is that in 1981 there wasn’t a lot of what we would now call Heavy Metal about. The NWOBHM bands, Motorhead, Judas Priest and maybe AC/DC. Everything else, including Rush, Rainbow, Lizzy etc was called Heavy Rock at the time.
What we would recognise as Heavy Metal now only really got going in the early 80s when the people who grew up listening to Black Sabbath records started making their own ones.
Of the others, the last three would have been bands that fans of Heavy Rock would have possibly bought records by. Members of the tribe if you want. Comus, not so much.

Of the three bands not already on the list one is a classic rock band formed in the 1960s, one is an american AOR band and the final one is a Canadian band who were popular for a brief period in the early 1980s (not April Wine).

No Jimi… phew… too talented, too attractive, and too black.
Besides, he could play the guitar.
I’m writing this list down to go with the classic raaawwwkkk top 100 albums of the ho-hum 1970s from a few years ago.
Both should be made available free of charge on the NHS as a warning.
The Golden Age, always taken as a given to be mid-50s to 69 (it’s not for dodgers), has just officially changed from mid-50s to mid-60s.
It has to.
It can’t be seen rubbing shoulders with this shite.
AC/DC: Walk All Over You, or Beating Around the Bush
Kiss: Strutter? Black Diamond? Love Gun? God almighty, it can’t be I Was Made for Lovin’ You was it?
Scorpions: Pictured Life?
Priest: I’m going for Hell Bent for Leather or Delivering the Goods

Thanks for doing this Wheaty. I’ve just spent hours doing an Apple Music playlist! Now to listen to it – lots in there that I don’t know. Must admit that I lost track of the heavy metal scene around the mid-70s.
A lot of the Saxon and Scorpions stuff is truly awful! But 747 Strangers in the Night is my favourite tack on the whole list so they could be good in parts.
Stick with the AC/DC and Iron Maiden and you can’t go wrong though.
Metal Rendezvous was the first metal album I ever heard as a mate bought it.
I quickly discovered AC/DC after that and I was off with them as Back in Black was released having already bought Highway To hell and If you Want blood…Krokus would never get another look in.
It does include AC/DC as a clue
I’m really glad (I’m glad) that you don’t have the “666 Best Metal Albums” Special Issue.
I can always oblige with ‘The 1000 albums you must hear before you die’!
Paranoid
Deep Purple – Black Night
Deep Purple – Smoke On The Water
Led Zep – Stairway
Motorhead – Motorhead
Hawkwind – Silver Machine
and probably something from Judas Priest … Hell Bent For Leather maybe
Aerosmith probably in there. Walk This Way and/or Sweet Emotion
No Aerosmith. Not really known in the UK in 1981.
Montrose – Space Station #5
I’d have said “Bad Motor Scooter” was more likely.
AC/DC
One or many of:
Whole Lotta Rosie
Highway To Hell
Let There Be Rock
It’s a Long Way To The Shops If You Want A Sausage Roll
Back In Black
Hells Bells
War Pigs
I imagine Iron Maiden will fill most of the places.
Closely followed by Saxon and Def Leppard.
Kerrang loved a bit of NWOBHM
There is a fair smattering of NWOBHM in there, not surprising given the date.
Budgie Breadfan
Edgar Broughton Band Out Demons Out
Alice Cooper Schools Out
Bloody hell.
I just remembered it is in the loft…now I have to go and find it!
Stargazer by Rainbow (is that Heavy Metal?)
Ace of Spades by Motorhead (is that Heavy Metal?)
Heavy Metal in 1981 was a wide field as the list will show!
Last time you gave us one of these lists, Will Smith was the 20th greatest singer of all time or summat. We’re deep into the land beyond shock here.
UFO Doctor Doctor
Diamond Head Am I Evil
Sabs Sabbath Bloody Sabbarh
Lynyrd Skynyrd Freebird
Van Halen Runnin With The Devil
Ah crap! A year too early for Death Alley Driver (best lyrics ever)
Have you seen the video Moose? It is of the same quality as the lyrics.
Oh yes. Those dudes must be going at nearly fifteen miles an hour!
Free- “Alright Now”
The “Metal Chart” on The Chart Show in the telly used to have, er, ZZ Top in it.
Precisely.
Maybe some Kiss and Queen in this list as well, I’d imagine.
See also:
Boston More Than A Feeling
Led Zep – Kashmir (possibly number one)
Rainbow – Stargazer – (again, possible number one)
Freebird
Paranoid, war pigs, iron man.
Smoke on the water, sweet child in time.
Voodoo chile
That concludes the voting from Birkenhead.
I’m pretty confident that although not necessarily in this order the top three in 1981 would be…
Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin
Smoke on the Water – Deep Purple
Freebird – Lynyrd Skynyrd
Followed by…
Xanadu – Rush
Whole Lotta Rosie – AC/DC
Stargazer – Rainbow
Victim of Changes – Judas Priest
Paranoid – Black Sabbath
Doctor Doctor – UFO
Jailbreak – Thin Lizzy
Overkill – Motörhead
Silver Machine – Hawkwind
Now I’m Here – Queen
Please don’t tell me Jimi gets lumped in.
What had the poor fella done to deserve that?
I trust he’d be nowhere near such an equivalent list today.
With the possible exception of Phil Lynott, I don’t think you’d have got anybody black in Kerrang in 1981.
I assume you’re willfully not counting Judith Chalmers?
Erm …. this isn’t really my field, but maybe ….
Deep Purple – Highway Star
Led Zep – Rock and Roll
Sugar Sugar – The Archies
We can’t have cartoon characters in a metal list.
Apart from Angus Young, obviously.
Can’t you hear an AC/DC version of this in your head? I can. All the time.
Doubt if this version would count either.
Worth seeing for the haircuts and dodgy dancing.
Caution by jonathan king and contains timmy bannockburn.
I have found the list! So here goes with the 30 found so far…

Which leaves about 70 spaces for Krokus’s oeuvre…
They do have one on the list!
Heatstrokes?
That is the one – No.81.
Pah, I was going to say Heatstrokes! For a (mercifully) short while, Krokus were my favourite band. Spent the last 40 years wondering why.
I saw them at The Lyceum in 1980 (?) and missed the last tube home.
No need for your Bedside Radio then!
@uncle-wheaty
Well played. A bit niche, but well played.
Blimey, even I wouldn’t have gone that far! They surely can’t have been worth it…
Heaven & Hell – Black Sabbath?
Heaven and Hell is No.31 and there is more Rainbow in the list.
It’s gonna be All Night Long and/or Since You’ve Been Gone then, innit? I care little for either.
All Night Long is No.62
Reckon there will be some Nazareth in there (This Flight Tonight?)
No Nazareth but there is a Pink Floyd track in the list weirdly!
Shine On You Crazy Diamond?
Correct. The first half is No.58.
Rock Bottom, Lights Out – UFO
Stranglehold, Stormtroopin – Ted Nugent

Neon Knights, Black Sabbath, Symptom of the Universe – Black Sabbath
Long Live Rock and Roll – Rainbow
Another Brick in the Wall – Pink Floyd

Holy Diver – Dio
Born To Be Wild – Steppenwolf
School Days – The Runaways
I Love Rock n Roll – Joan Jett
None of those I’m afraid.
Holy Diver was 1983 Gary for Heaven’s sake.
*writes “see me after class” on Gary’s jotter*
Any Quo in there?
Just one track.
Down Down ?
Not that one.
Caroline?
Caroline is No.66
Mountain – Nantucket Sleighride?
Not on the list…memories of Sunday morning’s and Weekend World!
Led Zeppelin – Black Dog
Led Zeppelin – When the Levee Breaks
Led Zeppelin – Immigrant Song
None of those.
Whole Lotta Love
Rocks Off – Def Leppard
Wheels of Steel – Saxon
Running Free – Iron Maiden
One of These Days – Trespass
If bloody Krokus can make it into the top 100, anything’s possible, so…
Flirting with Disaster – Molly Hatchet
Tush – ZZ Top
Rock City – Riot
Steamrock Fever – Scorpions
Something by Status Quo?
You are right with a few of those as well…
Def Leppard – Rocks Off – No.55
Saxon – Wheels of Steel – No.21
Iron Maiden – Running Free – No.34
Riot – Rock City – No.80
ZZ Top – Tush – No.98
The Scorpions and Molly Hatchett are on the list but not with those tracks.
Was Beating the Odds the Molly Hatchet song? (Did they have any others?)
Apparently they do.
Oi @yorkio
I’ll give you “bloody Krokus!”
A patch! A Krokus patch! What I’d give for one of those these days…
I’ve still got enough patches of a similar vintage to cover a small sofa.
Last week I saw a fairly young woman in the street wearing a denim jacket with cut-off sleeves, festooned with RAWWWK patches. Such a garment was ubiquitous in my 80s childhood and now it’s a sort of Statement.
You’ve done well ! I so wish I still had my ephemera from way back when. I had a Magnum Sword of Chaos and everything!
….what, all the time or just first thing in the morning?
Oh Moose. That was an open net, wasn’t it? I’d been so excited about Pomp Rock ephemera I’d ignored the opportunities for smut.
Yikes
https://the-official-magnum-merchandise-store.myshopify.com/products/the-sword-of-chaos
Something by Bad Company, maybe?
“Can’t Get Enough”?
No Bad Company.
Whole Lotta Love must be there somewhere
Then looking at Axe Attack Vols 1 and 2, how about
Breaking the Law
Cat Scratch Fever
Make it Real
Sweet Emotion
The Zoo
United
The Trees
The worst track on Axe Attack was by Def Leppard. It was obvious even then. Oh if only we had eyes to have seen.
Whole Lotta Love is No.17
The Zoo is No.78
How about some more Sabbath big hitters:
N.I.B.
Sweet Leaf
Children of the Grave
Children of the Grave is No.54
I know that Yes aren’t a metal band, but how about…
Yes – Awaken
Yes – Starship Trooper
No Yes.

More Rush surely? Too early for Tom Sawyer or Limelight?
Nantucket Sleighride by Mountain?
Maybe Working Man or Finding my Way?
I thought 2112 would be a bit too prog, but then Shine on… is up there, so who knows?
2112: Overture/Temples of Syrinx is No.6
Working Man is No.88
I think the list was compiled before Moving Pictures was released but there are some other Rush songs in the list.
Bastille Day?
By-Tor and the Snow Dog?
Anthem?
By-Tor and the Snow Dog is No. 61
Communication Breakdown?
Heartbreaker?
Neither of those.

Funny that Kerrang started with a huge list. As if they’d decided to short-cut through the next 25 years of music magazines and just go straight to the end.
The list technically is a Sounds/Kerrang list as you had to vote via Sounds ahead of the first edition of Kerrang being published.
Rainbow – Kill the King
Deep Purple – Space Truckin’
Another one down…
Kill The King is No.42
Kick Out The Jams – MC5
Raw Power – Iggy and The Stooges
Neither of those.
One band who were very popular in 1981 have three entries and no one has mentioned them at all so far.
Bad Manners??
Afraid not.
It wasn’t Stars on 45 either!
Magnum?
Angelwitch?
April Wine?
None of them but there is a NWOBHM band of similar standing that has two entries.
Venom?
Surely not Girlschool?
Emergency and the Please Don’t Touch thing with Motörhead?
If not, then it’s hard to think of any second rankers who’ve not otherwise been mentioned. I wouldn’t have thought than anyone in 1981 would have thought the likes of Samson or Vardis were worth a vote?
How about Rose Tattoo?
In the 1981 zone now…
No Venom.
Girlschool – Emergency – No.84
Girlschool/Motorhead – Please Don’t Touch – No.41
Vardis have two entries!
Similar standing? Dumpy’s Rusty Nuts! Vardis, Tygers of Pan Tang!
Poor Dumpy. Last seen working as “local crew” in Birmingham for Tad Bayliss, a veteran of the Brum music scene. Not a well man by all accounts.
Vardis have two entries.
100MPH
Let’s Go
There’s more in the Vardis cannon, but those are the go to tracks
(If I Were King and their cover of Silver Machine are outside bets)
You love Vardis you do, they are your favourite band of all time they are!
Both correct.
100mph is No.85
Let’s Go is No.96
Steve Zodiac must have spent a fortune on stamps that month.
The Beatles – Helter Skelter
Surprisingly correct.
Helter Skelter is No.95
WHAAAAT!
Somewhere Bingo Little is rolling in his grave.
Sex Pistols maybe?
God Save The Queen
Holidays In The Sun
No punk of any sort in the list.
Fool for Your Loving – Whitesnake
Could there be more than one Van Halen song on there?
Eruption
Running with the Devil
And the Cradle Will Rock
Closer to the Heart – Rush
Fool For Your Loving is No.35 and they have two more on the list (the popular band in 1981 referred to earlier in the post).
There is another Van Halen, running With The Devil is already in the list and it is not either of the others.
More Rush to find but not that one.
Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love then?
Correct, in at No.53
What about “Radar Love”, by the Golden Earrings?
Not in the list.
Just 35 left now…
1. Whole Lotta Rosie – AC/DC
2. Stargazer – Rainbow
3. Stairway To Heaven – Led Zeppelin
4. Free Bird – Lynyrd Skynyrd
5. Smoke On The Water – Deep Purple
6. 2112: Overture/Temples of Syrinx – Rush

11. Doctor Doctor – UFO
12. Xanadu – Rush
13. Ace of Spades – Motorhead
14. Rock Bottom – UFO

More Rush? I’d no idea that they were so popular with Kerrang readers…
Cygnus X-1? La Villa Strangiato? Both seem a bit proggy for a metal mag, but then…2112, Shine on…
A Passage to Bangkok?
Something for Nothing?
La Villa Strangiato is no. 76
“clever dick rockers with long songs and a penchant for concept albums” – ergo, prog?
Maybe it was just 2112…
Any more Purple?
Woman From Tokyo
Burn
Burn is No. 24
Silver Machine? Soz of its been mentioned up there and no, it’s not heavy bloody metal,
Already listed
I think the thing is that in 1981 there wasn’t a lot of what we would now call Heavy Metal about. The NWOBHM bands, Motorhead, Judas Priest and maybe AC/DC. Everything else, including Rush, Rainbow, Lizzy etc was called Heavy Rock at the time.
What we would recognise as Heavy Metal now only really got going in the early 80s when the people who grew up listening to Black Sabbath records started making their own ones.
That is a good point and should hopefully help with some of the remaining answers.
Doctor Doctor.,,erm UFO . Not ver Twins.
In the top 20, already listed.
More Saxon …
Stallions Of The Highway
Frozen Rainbow
Strong Arm Of The Law
Dallas 1PM

Golden Age?
It went thatta way.
I’m not sure whether to feel sympathy or get Gareth Hunt to prepare a cup of coffee.
Probably the latter, if I’m honest.

Meatloaf was popular with Bat Out of Hell and Deadringer around that time wasn’t he? Many metal associations there – what with the bikes and leather.
Well done, Bat Out Of Hell is No.30
Immigrant Song. Have we said that?
It is not on the list and all the Led Zeppelin songs have been found.

Can you give any clues.
I’m not convinced White Spirit or Sledgehammer will be in there.
Toad The Wet Sprocket?
Of the three bands not already on the list one is a classic rock band formed in the 1960s, one is an american AOR band and the final one is a Canadian band who were popular for a brief period in the early 1980s (not April Wine).
The others are alltracks from the bands I mentioned earlier – with at least two more tracks from both Judas Priest and Scorpions.
Have we tried Grinder and Metal Gods by Judas Priest?
Oooh! The Canadian band…Triumph…I live for the weekend?
The others ..,REO Speedwagon…Grand Funk Railroad?
Triumph I Live For The Weekend is No. 86
REO Speedwagon is also correct – name that tune!
Time for Me to Fly?
(unlikely to be Keep On Lovin’ You, but there was a little bit of Kerrang that went for the soft side)
Back On The Road Again…see below.
(missed that – oops)
I hope that the Canadian band is Max Webster and the song is Battle Scar!
Erm…Take it on the run? Had a bit of a metal solo if I recall
Not that one.
Steppenwolf?
This is not an REO Speedwagon song I’m well aware.
Erm..Keep on Loving you?
The 1960s band are British.
Not that one.
It was a song of theirs from the late 1970s.
I’m ashamed to say I don’t know!
It has a killer riff and is about travelling!
Back on the road again
Is the correct answer.
No. 90 on the list.
Wot no Styx?
I’m now getting retrospectively indignant that there was no Max Webster!
A couple from the Iron Maiden debut not yet shouted (I think):
Prowler
Sanctuary
Charlotte The Harlot
Prowler is No.50 and completes the Maiden entries.

Girlschool Yeah Right
(also up there but I think it got lost in conversation)
Yes it is No.91 – apologies if I missed it.
MSG, Lost Horizons? Into the Arena?
Lost Horizons is No.23
Into The Arena Is already in the list.
Sorry Uncle, I really should pay more attention but this thread is brill!
1 AC/DC, 2 Scorpions, 1 Judas Priest, 1 Kiss left
AC/DC
from Powerage: Sin City
from Highway to Hell: If You Want Blood
from Back In Black: You Hook Me All Night Long
(there’s plenty more. Please be one of those to stop me copying AC/DC track lists)
None of those but it is a track from Highway To Hell.
Shot Down in Flames?
Not that one.
Have we tried Girls Got Rhythm?
I think the Kiss track will be God of Thunder. Or Deuce.
Scorpions will be Blackout or Can’t Live Without You? That was their latest album at the time.
None of those and the Scorpions tracks are not from Blackout.
I thought we’d tried more or less everything from Highway to Hell now!
Could the Scorpions tracks be Don’t Make No Promises (Your Body Can’t Keep) and Coast to Coast? Or Virgin Killer?
Could the missing Kiss be Cold Gin?
None of those and I have checked and the track is definitely from Highway To Hell.
Pipe down, Grandad – we just want to rock and roll all nite (sic) and party every day.
What’s a dodger?
I’ll post the final list later this evening so last chance to guess the last 5.
Two more identified.
AC/DC – Walk All Over You – No.99
Kiss – Black Diamond – No.94
The two Scorpions and one Judas Priest are all that is left to get now.

Enjoy.
Let us now rock.
Thanks, @Uncle Wheaty – this has been like playing heavy metal Battleships.
They’d sink!
You’re welcome.
Next up the greatest ever 40 XTC tracks as voted for by me!
Bags of Fun with Buster?
Mayor of Simpleton in at No.1
It’s got a fantastic bass line but it’s no Complicated Game.
My real No.1 is probably Respectable Street.
Thanks for doing this Wheaty. I’ve just spent hours doing an Apple Music playlist! Now to listen to it – lots in there that I don’t know. Must admit that I lost track of the heavy metal scene around the mid-70s.
Beware.
A lot of the Saxon and Scorpions stuff is truly awful! But 747 Strangers in the Night is my favourite tack on the whole list so they could be good in parts.
Stick with the AC/DC and Iron Maiden and you can’t go wrong though.
Come on then, who’s going to start a Krokus thread?
Not me.
I bailed after Metal Rendezvous.
You missed Hardware. And the one after it.
Metal Rendezvous was the first metal album I ever heard as a mate bought it.
I quickly discovered AC/DC after that and I was off with them as Back in Black was released having already bought Highway To hell and If you Want blood…Krokus would never get another look in.
Then NWOBHM hit…
Oh. YOU were the one who bought Back in Black!
…er…
The loft has been cleared and no more lists are imminent you’ll be glad to know!
Can we just shout out suggestions for what might have been in your loft, and then just list that?
Do you like hamsters?
No thanks, I’ve just put one out.
Hamsters? Are you saying “loft” was a euphemism all along..?
My ‘loft’ is now fully cleansed.
Take that any way you want!
Saying “cleansed” rather than the more usual “cleared” is rather sinister. Does it involve disinfectant? Be thorough… Luminol doesn’t lie.
Jeyes Fluid and a good scrubber.
She cost me £50!
Oho!
