Sly little Afterword-friendly pun by Jeff Stirling on Gillette Soccer Saturday today. “The scorer was Niall Southerland, that’ll be appreciated by his brothers and Quiver”
Mrs H despairs about this programme – according to her it’s watching blokes watching football on the TV – and what’s wrong with that?

What other ways are there to spend a Saturday Afternoon?
Well you can use the magic of the internet to watch a real game.
I just saw Everton lose to Burnley in a game they should have won by a mile while sharing the experience (and pain) via WhatsApp with my brother in Spain. We were also keeping up with Chester playing at York via live text commentary.
It’s time the Mighty Clarets had a bit of luck. Shame it was at the expense of Everton rather than one of the Forces of Evil.
His mate ‘Kammy’ was on HIGNFY last night. I think I can say for certain that they won’t be booking him again.
Agreed. He was awful.
But when do we get Watching Blokes Watching Bands And Drinking Beer In Pubs?
That’s what I want to know.
It’s just radio on TV isn’t it? I prefer the real thing as it removes me from the couch.
Agreed and you can do some ironing at the same time as I did today!
Deliberately picking 2.15 or 2.30 kick-offs to go to, so that I can settle down in a warm hostelry at 4.15, with warm beer and a warm fire, to see Jeff & co. bring the results home? Guilty as charged.
I sneak out stuff like this whenever I lecture. it’s a dog whistle for the one person in the audience / class who knows what I mean when I use a phrase like “a plague of lighthouse keepers”, or “all points north of Hatfield”. Not that I lecture to many 55-year old men, but it keeps academic conference attendees on their toes. These things are important.
I was in a lecture in 1994 at Sheffield Hallam when the linguist Norman Blake was mentioned.
Three rows behind me somebody said “….Teenage Fanclub?”
I used to like Final Score on Grandstand especially when they also included rugby results etc.
Newport was always a late result because they kicked off at 3.15. That allowed the dockers 15 minutes to get to the game after the whistle blew at 3.
I was impressed earlier on when the commentator of the Spurs game, when Son got subbed after a less than scintillating performance said “Son doesn’t always shine on TV”.
That is quality, even if he was rehearsing it last night and praying for the substitution..
Isn’t it akin to Blokes Reading What Other Blokes Write About What Blokes Are Listening To?
(With apologies to the women here for their necessary omission in the cause of Bloke’s Pathetic Attempt To Make Other Blokes Laugh)
With regards to the OP, anyone that references The Suths & Q needs 👏. We’re currently in the midst of the reappraisal of Phil Collins (he’s a drumming God and his early solo albums are wonderful, btw) and I await the same for Iain and Gavin and the Quivers.
