During one of my current episodes of insomnia I decided to try to create a quiz for you all which would be a least difficult to Google. So here it is. Below I have take the first word from each of the lines of a section of ten Beatles songs for you to identify. The songs are well known (ie from the main albums and singles) and the lyrics are from significant and recognisable sections of the song. They were chosen by random more or less. Now I know that the start and end of lines in lyrics can be ambiguous but I think not so much in these particular cases as they are distinctive and form part of the rhythmic structure. I’m also hoping that each case is unique. Finally I’ve ignored any “oos”,”aahs” , “heys” etc. There is no prize other than the respect of your peers.
By way of example the opening lines of Lucy in the Sky would be “picture, with, somebody, a”
1. the, the, the, the
2. if, if, if, if
3. hold, look, when, help
4. every, every , it, it, it
5. well, you, and, was, so
6. I, while, with, still
7. Think, you, think, we, we, we
8. everybody, everything, everyone
9. Doesn’t, knows, isn’t
10. Friday, Sunday, Monday’s
Good quiz, I know the answers but will leave the glory to lesser mortals: ))
I’ve only got these two so far. I wish work wouldn’t get in the way of a good quiz!
6. I, while, with, still – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
10. Friday, Sunday, Monday’s – Lady Madonna
Both right. well done
Help! Help! Help! Help!
That’s not another question in the quiz, it’s me struggling with the answers.
9. For No One
(WIld Arse Guess, or divine inspiration?)
Not correct. Sorry
Wild Arse Guess? Is that a Suffolk craft IPA?
No 8 Good Morning.
correct.
“Everybody knows there’s nothing doing
Everything is closed it’s like a ruin
Everyone you see is half asleep”
And you’re on your own, you’re in the street.
-> *air drumming*
6 While my guitar gently weeps.
Right – but Billybob beat you to it
9 Nowhere Man
7 We Can Work It Out
Okay, gonna stop here for two reasons. 1 – nobody likes it when one person gets all the answers. 2 – It’s 2:13am and I could quite conceivably be up all night trying to get the rest!
Great quiz by the way. Google has ruined quizzes. Me and my mates had a go at a pub quiz the other day, for the first time in years, and were sat right under the quizmaster’s nose, but we suspected that some of the teams down the other end of the pub were having sneaky peeks at their phones. So next time we’re going to sit down the other end of the pub, not to cheat, but to tut loudly at anybody we catch out. We were, however, sat next to the obligatory drunk arsehole who thought it was a laugh to shout out the answers out to any he knew, which was making the quizmaster rather cross. Fortunately, he didn’t know many. Sadly, neither did we.
I used to love the music quiz in the Boogaloo, before the pub disappeared up its own arse. It was just the right level of difficulty.
I used to be in a quiz league around here but this has, unfortunately, folded as people left the area, died or lost interest. We used to be competitive but there were no prizes except glory. It was great fun – no cheating took place (apart from Fat Mike and Shiny Andy the child molester from the Rose and Crown who used to mutter the correct answers to team mates)*.
Local pubs used to do the generic quizzes from their breweries and bastard Google has ruined all that.
*all names have been changed to protect the guilty
9. Nowhere Man is correct
Doesn’t have a point of view
knows not where he’s going to
Isn’t he a bit like you and me?
7. We can work it out. Also correct.
Think of what you’re saying
You can get it wrong and still you think that it’s all right
Think of what I’m saying
We can work it out and get it straight or say good night
We can work it out
We can work it out
2 If I Needed Someone (first verse)
4 It Won’t Be Long (second verse)
4. It wont be long. correct. well done I thought that was tricky.
Every night the tears come down from my eyes
Every day I’ve done nothing but cry
It won’t be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won’t be long yeh, yeh, yeh
It won’t be long yeh, till I belong to you
2. Is not IINS I’m afraid although that song does have a lot of “ifs” in it and could have fallen foul of the scan problem mentioned. The song I had in mind has the “ifs” coming rather closer together
5 is I Saw Her Standing There
5. I Saw Her Standing There. Correct
Well, she was just seventeen
You know what I mean
And the way she looked
Was way beyond compare
So how could I dance with another,
So 1,2,3 still missing. Thanks for your participation so far.
Well tis been a couple of days with no new guesses so I’m assuming everybody has given up. The missing answers are as follows:
1. the, the, the, the – “the deeper you go,
the higher you fly,
the higher you fly,
the deeper you go”
2. if, if, if, if – “If you drive a car, car, I’ll tax the street
If you try to sit, sit, I’ll tax your seat
If you get too cold, cold, I’ll tax the heat
If you take a walk, walk, I’ll tax your feet
3.. hold, look, when, help – “Hold your head up you silly girl
Look what you’ve done!
When you find yourself in the thick of it
Help yourself to a bit of what is all around you”
I didnt think it was that hard. Cheers
Dagnabbit. They’re easy when you see them, but could I heck as like get them yesterday. Number 1 is my favourite Beatles song too. Once again, great quiz.
Thanks for trying. I think the quiz style is flawed by the ambiguity around the definition of a “line”. Still it’s a good challenge to try to think of some quiz format for which Google isn’t an immediate help.
Indeed most enjoyable. Thanks Mr Virus.
