A great musical start to the year. These two albums I’m sure will be high in the world famous Afterword end of year poll, If there’s any justice.
Keeley Forsyth is a real revelation, the Guardian isn’t wrong, Scott Walker & Nico are in there but it is a lot more to the record than that.
Bill Fay should need no introduction, some fantastic 60s albums, a brilliant and real favourite of mine the unreleased (until 2005) Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and then nothing until 2012. This is his third album in his revival and is another fantastic release. Salt of the Earth in next comment.

Bill Fay. Lovely.
Not had chance to listen to it yet, but the new album from A Girl Called Eddy came out last Friday…..
I came here to post that, too. I’ve heard it twice and it was worth the 13-year wait. Produced by Daniel from AW faves The Silver Seas, it’s like the best bits of both.
This combination sounds so good on paper that I fear listening to the actual record in case it disappoints
I bought the album on just listening to the title track above. It’s magnificent. Not so impressed by her earlier stuff mind you.
She bends her sound to the producer. Her first album (13 years ago) sounds just like early Richard Hawley (who produced it, funnily enough).
Hmm, I’m not a Hawley fan (odd exceptions) so that might explain it.
Very impressive. Beautifully arranged and played.
Keeley Forsyth was one of the performers at a Daylight Music session in December. Very, very powerful stuff indeed and I’m currently in two minds whether I thought it had merit. The absolute antithesis of easy listening and performed as powerfully as it sounds on record.
Craven Faults have delivered a great January album, lovely modular synth electronica that is reminiscent of some classic krautrock or the hauntological stuff on Ghost Box. Marvellous sounds and textures, and if you get in quick there’s a limited CD that includes all their earlier EPs as well.
Liked that a lot, so just ordered the 3CD set from Normans Records.
Think that’ll be an excellent record to work to – and I don’t mean that in any dismissive manner.
@Kid-Dynamite on the basis that you and I seem to like a couple of bands in common I have taken a punt on your recommendation. The Krautrock influence pulled me in.
In relation to the original post the Bill Fay album is great but to be expected.
hope you like it! I always feel a crushing sense of responsibility when people buy things on my recommendation…
The chances are I will enjoy it – it’s not unusual to jump in without trying. Mostly it’s a good outcome – occasionally a big mistake – looking at you Joanna Newsom.
Just been playing it – really like the Ep’s especially the second one Netherfield Works.
Album might take longer to grow on me as it is a lot more subtle.
Good recommendation though.
You know how Spotty plays something similar after an album finishes? So at the end of the Eddy album it went into I Trawl The Megahertz. Worked quite well. Liking the Eddy album – at times a bit like The Delines but with a big production .
I get a strong aroma of early/mid Aimee Mann.
My taste buds detected a flavour of Cat Power’s The Greatest with a slight essence of Hall & Oates and even a smidgen of Steely Dan.
Eddy to Megaherz was a pretty classy segué!
Anything that is likened to the Delines gets my interest. And I was already keen after Eddy’s first album.
That’s interesting Feedback. I was listening to Girl Called Eddy’s new one yesterday and thinking on one track (can’t remember which) how much I was getting Prefab Sprout vibes!
The hand of ace songwriter/musician/producer Daniel Tashian very evident. He was also the man behind Golden Hour By Kacey Musgraves. He did a solo gig at the Lexington some years ago and I had a really nice chat with him. Lovely bloke and sooo talented.
Was it The Lexington or some other, really small place?
Anyway, I really enjoyed that gig and interview. A very pleasant, interesting and engaging guy.
I bought the Silver Seas album “Alaska” on the strength of it and found it rather disappointing.
You are right @Mike_H it was A Word in Your Ear event at the Slaughtered Lamb in 2013 (just googled it). I also saw The Silver Seas at a small venue around that time (Danny Baker was guest host). Speaking of which I agree Alaska is a bit bland – Chateau Revenge remains their high point.
Seconded. Alaska a relative flop in my book, although v good by anyone else’s standards.
That Kacey Musgrave album is now in the post.
Just saw that Keeley Forsyth was on BBC Scotland’s Quay Sessions recently. It’s on iPlayer at….

Thank you for the heads up. What a compelling performance.
