We looked at a new tv recently and were told that Samsung don’t put Freeview on their sets anymore as everything is going online in some way. I’d really suggest going to somewhere like John Lewis and having a really good look at the on screen menus and how complicated they are and what the sound is like, especially if she might want to connect headphones or hearing aids, as not all sets offer the same connectivity. I’d also consider a “big button’ remote control as an extra and 32” might be a better size, 27” is really a computer monitor these days.
We bought a TV for my father-in-law from JL in Leeds, and they were really helpful with helping him work out which he prefered (only a pretty standard one rather than HD – I think with his eyesight he didnt quite get the benefit).
(other retailers are available etc.).
Yes, this. John Lewis also often sell-off last year’s models at knock-down prices. I got a really nice Sony 43″ smart TV a few years back for about £200, when the slightly later model the same size was going for several times that. We are not huge telly watchers, so I’m not up on telly fashion, and as others have said, the bloke in the shop was extremely helpful (and patient) explaining exactly what it was I was paying for. Great staff at JL in the main.
I got my mum one of these, too small for your spec but my learning point was I had previously got her a smart TV (“lots of choice, Mum!!”) which was a disaster. The UI was too confusing. This one is Billy Basic and very simple and was just the job.

As many are saying – keep it simple. Just back from UK where we finally persuaded ancient in-laws to replace their equally ancient telly. Mid-range 32″, brilliant picture, Smart.
Followed by two days of “I don’t want to watch bloody iPlayer, I want to watch Morse at 2.30 like I always do. What do you mean Dad can’t record the Grand Prix ? What do you mean ‘get it on Catch-up’? What do you mean I can’t Live Pause until I plug in a USB stick whatever that is? I want to watch Cabbage Wars on DVD – what do you mean I can’t? There was nothing wrong with the old telly, what do you mean you took it to the tip?”

JL usually give a 5 year warranty for no extra too
Sorry your right- I meant to say about 34″ plus and she has got as programmable big button remote- thank you!
Another vote for JL.
You will struggle to find something as small as 32″ nowadays, though. They seem to start at 43″.
I wanted a 4K telly for my garage. The smallest I could get was 55″. It cost less than the 42″ plasma it replaced.

TV for the elderly? Only needs to pick up the Yesterday, Talking Pictures and ITV4 channels?
Naked Attraction?
and Dave and Quest. Quality broadcasting.

Have you considered a second hand one? Maybe even FreeCycle – there must be loads of non smart ones that would fit the bill chucked out every year.
Richer Sounds seem to sell a lot of TVs these days and often have good deals. Also knowledgeable friendly staff plus good after-sales service.
I will venture to John Lewis tomorrow.
Thank you all for your help!
