Great to hear the Lisa O’Neill song. What an incredible voice she has. I love her work with Yorkston/Thorne/Khan.
I presume that that song, “Silver Seed”, is off Ms O’Neill’s new album, “All of this is Chance”. On his podcast, Ian A. Anderson (the Folk Roots guy, not the Jethro Tull guy) played another track from the album, “Goodnight World”, which I thought sounded superb.
Try this. We saw this lady live on Friday night. Don’t know about you, but I usually find my attention wandering fairly quickly when it comes to singer-songwriters alone on stage with just a guitar for company. Not Alice Night though – Mrs thep and I were both captivated for 40 minutes or so, as were the rest of the audience. She’s a storyteller (Bonnie was a friend who died in a stupid accident at a party), with an absolutely sensational voice.
Jim Irvin mentioned this on an episode of his podcast, You’re Not On The List. It reminded me of the intensity Maria McKee had live around the time. When the future Mrs F and I saw her, someone in the audience shouted “get your tits out” and she threw her white Telecaster at him.
If you only know her for Show Me Heaven, try this:
Yes. She came on late with eyeballs on stalks at the above-mentioned gig. I suspected backstage Charlie at the time, but she’s since been diagnosed as Bipolar and, more recently, come out as polyamourous.
I followed her up to the last-but-one album but, tbh, I only play the first three.
Although the singer is Saudi, this doesn’t go on either of the Arabic threads because it’s sung in Urdu and features a sitar (played by Anoushka Shankar).
So try this.
Born in Saudi, according to Wikipedia, but yes subsequently brought up in Pakistan. All of her collaborators in that excellent TD clip are interesting in their own right.
She’s always referred to as a Pakistani(-American) artist so I’ve never thought that she might have been born somewhere else @Mike_H. But re-listening to her KEXP set, I realise that the interviewer does mention that Arooj was born in Saudi. Shame on me!
You are darned right about her musicians. I saw her at Roskilde this summer with Gyan Riley and Darian Donovan Thomas. Superb!
I think I just meant it seems really hard, and why would you saddle yourself with it? Interestingly, she kept trying to do spoken intros while playing, and stuffing it up. Said she’d been trying to master that for years without success.
I used the bloody box !

Use the box.
I’m humourlessly telling you to use the box even though I know from personal experience that using the box doesn’t always work.
Irritating, isn’t it?
It’s obviously a Scroedinger’s box
In case you missed it …
Try this.
Guitarism and Brit rap from a weirdy looking fucker in a hospital gown.
Does this mean he can’t turn his back for risk of exposing his ‘arris?
Cool, cool, cool, cool.

Cool!

I take my hat off to you, @Pencilsqueezer. The combination of film and music on that Anna B Savage clip had me spellbound.
I am beginning to suspect you are a sorcerer @Lodestone of Wrongness!
You say the magic words: “Try this” And the offerings that your acolytes come up with are quite extraordinary.
Try this!
Glad you dig it. As an aside I ain’t nobody’s acolyte.

Yes it’s from her latest which is another early contender for one of my favourites of this year. All her work is well worth exploring.
Seuras enjoyed it:

That’s some voice!
Sure is, glad you like it.

Tremendous stuff!
Yes, indeed! Try this?

Telecasters – built to last ( and take a bit of abuse).
Am I right in thinking she’s become a little eccentric in recent years?
Yes. She came on late with eyeballs on stalks at the above-mentioned gig. I suspected backstage Charlie at the time, but she’s since been diagnosed as Bipolar and, more recently, come out as polyamourous.

(I know- I have banged on about MONO for ages – but as long as they continue to produce great music, I will continue to do so)
Try this.

Great minds think alike, Mike, except I couldn’t remember what she was called.
I know the album sleeve is purple.
Excellent choice @Mike_H. You and I are on the same page. That is such a wonderful clip. I just heard it for the first time and was bowled over.
BUT….
Arooj is certainly not from Saudi. She’s from Pakistan. And fabulous!
Here’s a little more from her!

The pure tone of Arooj Aftab’s voice reminded me slightly of Virginia Rodrigues, from Brazil.
BJ Cole – Gnossienne No. 3
Try this.
Saw this lady live the same night as Alice Night (above). She sings and plays the cello at the same time, which seems unlikely.
https://youtu.be/whdL6LTNx9I
That’s interesting – I can see what you mean about it being unlikely, but I can’t work out why…
And, talking about singing cellists…try this.
I think I just meant it seems really hard, and why would you saddle yourself with it? Interestingly, she kept trying to do spoken intros while playing, and stuffing it up. Said she’d been trying to master that for years without success.
Moulettes are fab.
I like what she’s doing – but you’re right, why make things harder for yourself?
Try this.

Try this too.
Take 5 (in 4).
That’s very good!
