Bloody hell, what’s he doing to us? I didn’t buy the last one – first time in ages I haven’t bought a new Dylan, and my heart just isn’t in it to buy this to take up space on the shelf. Is it me..?
It must be very quick and easy for him to do them.
He and the musicians all know the songs, they’ll have played them & worked out the arrangements in concerts, and can bash out an album in no time.
It does seem a bit much, but it keeps “product” in the shops & a triple album garners more publicity than one disc.
Yeah I get that he probably enjoys it but is he just assuming that if he farts into a tape recorder and sells it under the Dylan brand people are going to buy it? Covers aren’t exactly what people value about him, are they? And it’s not like his voice is a thing of unearthly beauty that transforms the songs into something new. It feels cynical and a bit All You Need Is Cash.
Dylan has been performing covers since the beginning of his career and I’m not sure what the situation is now, but about 10-15 years ago there appeared to be a brisk trade in/demand for in the old internet binary newsgroups Dylan covers of other people’s songs and the original-artist versions of them.
Maybe that interest is deemed to be still present and, particularly since the widespread acclaim of his “Theme Time Radio” shows, Bob and his people see an ongoing opportunity.
Or perhaps he’s just using such releases as a stopgap while he refines his reincarnation as a protest singer..
It can’t be “All You Need is Cash”… ? How many records will he actually sell, how many downloads – comparatively few I suspect?
Nah, it must be because he enjoys it (I blame too many drugs in the sixties).
Possibly nothing more than a contractual obligation. Acts often have to deliver a certain number of albums in a certain time-frame, and in some cases multiple disc sets count as multiple albums.
I hope this doesn’t mean the upcoming dates on The Never Ending Tour contain a high percentage of tunes from this and the last two cds. I quite liked the smattering of songs from Shadows in the Night on the 2015 tour but would have a sense of humour failure if he sang these type of songs for most of the gig.
If this wasn’t Dylan but was a singer down the pub we would all think it was dreadful, wouldn’t we? I love the old boy to bits, but if I bought this Mrs. T would divorce me. Hmmm….how much is the vinyl version again..?
Much being made by the record company of the ‘triplicate’ aspect but that is tosh and, yet another case, of lets squeeze even more money out of the fans…..
10 tracks on each disc and I am guessing that none of the songs clock in at much over 3 minutes so, on that basis, this set would have made a very short running time even when spread over just 2 discs! Anyway like many I am not interested.
His interpretations of the songs, his phrasing on these covers albums has been superb. As has the recording and the band backing. But having said that yes, I bought the first one and enjoyed the renditions in concert haven’t bought Fallen Angels and doubt I’ll buy this.
Interesting that after so many years of denying the GE Smith never ending tour band the opportunity to record with him , the latest iteration is getting lots of opportunities.
Fair question – as I said I bought the first one and listen to it periodically. My comment was more to do with you comparing him to a “singer down the pub”. I dont think that does him justice…then again there are some remarkable singers you sometimes encounter in unexpected venues. And just coz the phrasing is superb doesn’t mean I will buy an album. I have no Tony Bennet albums.
Thanks – wondered why it wouldn’t work @Junior-Wells ! I was being a bit facetious obviously, but my point was that we wouldn’t give this nearly the attention we are if it were by anyone else. I get the phrasing point, but I can’t listen to this for long, wonderful phrasing or not. The material isn’t really for me either.
No worries. Of course we wouldn’t but it gets the attention because of all that has gone before. The Stones do a duff album it gets heaps more attention than the same duff album by someone else.
For me, I’m finding a greater appreciation of music and more particularly the craft of songwriting in these recordings. Being a master songwriter it is interesting which songs he select, same as for McCartney and others who draw on the back catalogue of popular song.
Having said all this, I still prefer Modern Times to Shadows In The Night.
In the early 90’s Bob released two CDs of folk covers, Good As I Been To You and World Gone Wrong. They were pleasant enough, but unneeded. In hindsight though they were just the thing to pull him out of his dangling ear-jewelry slump from Hell and get him writing quality folk/blues style songs again. For a man of his age this was rightly considered a mega comeback.
Now age 103, Bob (I think) is trying to pull off a similar re-set. This time by going beyond his own young roots to his parent’s music. Music that probably made a big impact on him as a small child. My hope is he can stick around long enough to put out an album of his own “new” material in this Old Style that he’s currently submerged in.
Triplicate is unnecessary for sure, but I’m grateful.
Disagree about World Gone Wrong – I think it’s a magnificent record on which he really makes those old blues and folk songs his own. All this Sinatra stuff on the other hand…..
Just saw this news elsewhere and came here to post. Hopefully this will get the Sinatra covers thing out of his system for good. Three discs though!

Don’t think I’ll be getting this one. Three more discs of that stuff* is far too much.
*which I’d characterise as “quite nice” and nothing more
Why does he do this stuff? Genuine question.
It must be very quick and easy for him to do them.

That’s a lovely song, and I like the way he sings it. The guitars and arrangement are beautiful.
But yeah, THREE albums?
Me too…it was a brilliant idea to use the steel guitar. But it’s a Spotify pick if ever I heard one.

Why not? Really liked Fallen Angels and his band play them beautifully.
My problem is that the song choice is more of the usual suspects on such an album as opposed to, say, Polka Dots & Moonbeams – but love the new track.
Never mind Costello’s muse – Dylan’s has been MIA for a while assumed captured by Clinton Heylin and held for ransom

Who does he think he is? Rod Stewart?
Truly dreadful.
1. A triple LP of Dylan doing Sinatra songs, or…
2. A Chelsea season ticket, or…
3. Volunteering for trainee dentists to give me root canal treatment.
In order of preference it’s a Ted Rogers job.
Wow, what a birthday present for me!

Don’t agree @NigelT.

So superb @JuniorWells that you haven’t bought them..?

BTW think you need a hyphen between Junior and Wells to trigger that message thingamebob

We are in violent agreement then!

The first one is enjoyable, but it’s all I need. If I see this for less than $10 I may pick it for completism, but no other reason.

I think @rec-room has prophet status.
Prefer WGW of the 2 folk covers albums
