I hope this is ok to share here. A couple of months ago via Twitter I was asked if I would like to contribute a piece for this website on The Associates. The premise is that you choose 10 “Toppermost” songs from your favourite artist and write an article to accompany these choices. I had the bulk of it already done from bits I’d done here. I’ve subsequently also rehashed the Thompson Twins thing I wrote here and am currently doing one on Tears For Fears which is great fun. The chap who runs it is a retired publisher who wanted something to do to fill his time you can find him on Twitter @AgeingRaver His site currently has 954 posts from 126 contributors a really wide range of artists top tens. Anyway I thought some of you might like to read some of the pieces from Roy Orbison, to Hot Chip and Neil Young. Nothing there on Fray Bentos Pies, Jaffa Cakes or Boris Johnson….

Oh, crikey! This looks like a real rabbit hole to disappear down. Thanks, Dave…I think 😏
I’m sure there’ll be something in there for you..
Perhaps later, but not right now.
Excellent piece, Dave; enjoyable read about the Associates who I know more from a distance.
Surprised you haven’t done one on Del Ross, um, Amitri, unless that is one of my fabled scrolling malfunctions.
Thanks Retro. Del Amitri was already taken….
Nice site. I went sraight to “S” for Sylvian and was pleased to find a good read over me brekky. Especially pleased as the writer is, like me, a fan of Sylvian’s later albums Blemish and Manafon. “The songs on Blemish dispel with the common fallacy that Sylvian’s work progressed from emotional to intellectual. In reality, as his music became more intellectual it also exposed more raw emotions.” Good point, well expressed.
Glad you found something of interest Gary..
I feel that I’ve used up all my Tears for Fears cards here over the years but if anyone was interested in reading more about them. It’s all here….

At random, I chose the piece on Dionne Warwick which turned out to be by David Lewis who is Australia’s leading jazz mandolinist.
Told from a very personal perspective, it is a real treat.
I’m hooked and am now keen to dip into a few more. I fear this could be dangerously addictive.
This site is a great complement to the AW. Here we meander vigorously and discover the most wondrous of stuff…. The Poppermostians stick to the point a little more.
That’s how I see it KFD. It’s a very specific and quite rigid theme to follow rather than the pub chat feel of The Afterword. I certainly feel this isn’t the place for me to write 2000 words on my Top Ten Tears for Fears songs but absolutely the place to write about my relationship with Del Amitri. There’s room for both I hope
I have written something about Depeche Mode that should appear on there soon. I just need to actually send it to them. I keep rewriting it.
I’ve started a piece about TMTCH but had a track list of 40 to whittle down to 10.
I can’t work out who that is – can you reveal?
The Men They Couldn’t Hang
I know nothing about them so I’ll keep an eye out for that one too
@dave-amitri its on Toppermost now.

Excellent. I’ll have a read later 👍
Oh right – the H at the end made me think “hitmakers” was in there, as in The Beatles being the Hey Jude Hitnakers.
Oooh I was hoping that was you when I saw the “Coming soon” tweet that included Depeche Mode. Looking forward to it
Oh blimey I didn’t know they’d done that, I’d better get a wriggle on.
It’s on there now.
Nice one BC. The ‘banging cutlery’ remix, lol. Anyone who bought a 12″ single in the 80s will recognise that sound. I enjoyed the Never Let Me Down Again video very much. Will delve a little deeper later on.
Thanks Nick.
Fantastic work, BC. We share similar Catholic schooling experiences. The bike sheds roughed me up, too!
Yeah – nuns duffing up teenage boys for not liking the UK Subs has been swept under the carpet by the Vatican for years.
It’s great BC I’ve left a comment on the site. I hope you enjoyed the experience. How many times did you change your top ten?
Yes I did enjoy doing it. Thanks for your comment – I have put a response on there. I did have quite a few changes but Wrong, Enjoy the Silence and Never Let Me Down Again picked themselves.
Thanks to @rigid-digit for contributing to this. I think it’s my favourite thing I’ve done…
It was a real joy to put together. Fan’s favourite songs and stories on the career of the nicest man in pop and one of the great British singer songwriters Nick Heyward Includes a special guest contribution from Gary Crowley

Cheers @dave-amitri, a fine read there.
Weird seeing your own name in print/interwebland (or it is for me anyway)
Thanks @rigid-digit or should I call you ….
I have written a piece on Dean Owens that is up there and I have submitted a Top 10 for Blue Rodeo which should be appearing there in the next few days.
Thanks for for pointing me towards it Dave.
I’ll check those out Carl…
A really affectionate piece of writing @dave-amitri – I loved the way you gathered in stories from others to help paint the picture of someone who is not only very talented but also by all accounts a thoroughly nice bloke.
The early jazz influence begins to make sense with HC100. I have sat watching high school jazz for a few years now due to three children displaying a musical ability that must come from their mother’s side of the family. Every now and then you see a precocious talent perform a self-penned number – and the name of the piece is usually something dull like “Hot Sauce” . I can see the appeal in coming up with “Pelican West” or “Lemon Fire Brigade”.
Thanks @black-celebration the podcast I mentioned in the piece really was revealing and as you say explained a lot about Nick’s influences
There’s a new one on there about Soft Cell. What a brilliant piece of writing, I agree with everything he says.

The man’s a fool. He didn’t include “What!”
Bloody idiot.
They’ve just uploaded post number 1000. It’s on The Pogues if anyone is interested
I’ve been putting this together for some time. The Blow Monkeys have done 11 albums over 34 years I’ve narrowed them down to 10 songs
