Obituary
The last of the golden era of lounge singers has died at the great age of 96. It was a long life that always seemed to be well lived, and I’m sure many younger people will at least be familiar with his name as he kept up to date by recording duets with Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga and so on. He seemed like a good egg did Tony.

RIP Tony B
I saw him at the Roundhouse in 2010 & it was incredible. Hearing a guy in his eighties turn off all amplification & sing acapella was remarkable & to be in the presence of a voice with that much power was something else!

Somehow – it was always about the song.

I saw him once in 1983 when I was snobby a pale imitation of Sinatra singing mum music. He completely won me over. His work with Bill Evans, just his voice and Bill’s piano, is fabulous.

Sad.
Even if he was 96 years old, you kind of hoped he’d always be around.
And he was indeed a good egg.

Quite possibly the very last of those who fought in Europe during WW2 to have had records in the charts in the 2020s. A giant voice and a life well lived.
