Unconvincing for me. There should have been dynamics. Instead it just cycled on. Don’t get me wrong,I appreciate it and I’m sure if I saw Mr. Hammond in a club I’d probably be into it. But only at the time.
Thanks for that Alias. I’ve downloaded the album and it’s great. What I’ve heard by Hammond I’ve always liked so this was a bit of a no-brainer once you’d made me aware of it’s existence.
I saw Tom Waits around about the time of Heart Attack and Vine. He was superb. I was in love with the album Small Change. I have always regarded Tom’s Schtick as somewhat cartoon but love it all the same. I live in hope that he returns home to Kathleen after a hard day with the angle grinders and his Carny mates and asks for Earl Grey tea. The question is … is pre Swordfish .. better than post Swordfish? Not sure I know my own mind.
I did earlier this evening. It’s a decent enough compilation of talking heads focusing on the ‘phases’ of Tom’s career, though it’s obviously hampered by the absence of any input from the man himself or anyone close to him (bar one former bandmate). Worthwhile but hardly earth shattering.
Just watched the doc. I thought it was a decent intro to Tom Waits. My wife enjoyed it too, so it must have been well done. Good to see some footage of Kathleen. The chronological overview worked well.
Tom Waits is a big and in some ways very difficult subject. I own most of his records and have read the Barney Hoskins book, but I still feel like I have only barely skimmed the surface.
I can’t begin to imagine the songs he must be working on right now in history…
Thanks for the heads up!
That’s the way the BBC4 bumbles.
Oh my lord, I’m looking forward to this. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
Me too. If any of you Tom Waits fans haven’t heard John Hammond Jr’s album of Tom Waits covers Wicked Grin, you really should:
Get Behind The Mule

I have a copy of Scarlett Johansen’s album of Waits covers. I’m not sure I would call it unmissable, but it’s better than you might expect.

Glad you like it. One reviewer said it could be a lost Chess classic whichI don’t think is too wide of the mark.
I like Holly Cole’s album of Waits covers, Temptation. Not to everyone’s taste, I imagine. Try Jersey Girl.
There are also Step Right Up and New Coat Of Paint, both tribute albums by various artists.
Grapefruit Moon is a covers album by Southside Johnny I think.
Noted and will definitely watch.
Did anyone try the song by song podcast that works its way through the Waits albums ?
No but a link would be appreciated.😎

Ta
I find the site navigation wanting. Sure looks nice though!
I will persevere.
Figured it out. I am old. 😂
I’m not sure if I can handle the ‘University Englishness’ of it though.
I shall persevere.
I’m sorry but those plummy tones are just too much!
I could handle this if they had musicians on as well but this is just an excercise in anthropology without any understanding
Arghh! The BBC thingy doesn’t work here🇨🇦 so hopefully YouTube 🙏
Or Tunnel Bear (other VPNs are available).

Anyone watched this yet? I haven’t found the time yet.

Oh that’s slightly disappointing. For some reason I thought Mr Waits was involved.
Are you sure we are talking about the same thing? The programme I watched had plenty of input from Tom, albeit mostly ‘in character’
Yes thanks. Quarter past two. What was the question?
